INTRODUCTION: Psychotropic medication is often prescribed to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who engage in challenging and other behavior (e.g., aggression and stereotypy, respectively), but there is limited understanding of the effects of these medications on behavior.
OBJECTIVE: Within the context of a larger study that evaluated the effects of psychotropic medication regimen changes on the presentation of challenging behavior, this study describes the presentation of stereotypic behavior of three individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
METHODS: St

A 'stereotypical movement' denotes a movement reproduced in a standardised form. The term is used in two fields, in movement science and in medical assessments of pathology. The former recognises the occurrence of regular patterns of movement across individuals expressed at regular points in development, such as the pre-reach in early infancy. The latter specifies a pathological form of repetitive movement by one individual symptomatic of, for example, autism. This entry explores the interindividual use of the term in movement science and touches on ongoing work to better classify and quantify

Stereotypies in Rett syndrome (RTT) are a diagnostic hallmark present in all stages of the disease, but descriptions of movement disorders in adults are very scant. Among 30 patients with RTT followed-up at San Paolo Hospital in Milan, we selected those aged > or =14 years and studied 12 patients (mean age 18. 6 years, range: 14-31) with MECP2 mutations. Mean age at stereotypies onset was 19.4 months; stereotypies at onset tend to be maintained during evolution, while new stereotyped movements can be detected in the follow-up. All patients still present stereotypies involving separated or join

We reviewed the medical records and videotapes of 100 patients with tardive dyskinesia (TD) referred to our movement disorders clinic to characterize the spectrum of hyperkinetic movement disorders caused by dopamine receptor blocking drugs (DRBD). Tardive stereotypy, present in 78 patients, was the most common type of TD, followed by tardive dystonia, akathisia, tremor, chorea, and myoclonus. Sixty-four had a combination of these hyperkinesias. In a second study, a "blind" review of videotapes of patients with a variety of movement disorders found that DRBD were the cause of stereotypic movem

Although prior research has suggested the function of socially reinforced problem behavior can change across time, the stability of the function of automatically reinforced behavior is largely unknown. Further, some authors have suggested automatically reinforced behavior is likely to enter into socially mediated contingencies. The present study compared 2 functional analyses conducted on the same target behavior at least 1 year apart. Participants were 6 individuals diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability displaying automatically reinforced vocal stereotypy. Results indicat

Slaton and Hanley (2016) compared the effects of multiple and chained schedules on stereotypy and item engagement for 2 individuals who exhibited automatically maintained motor stereotypy. Contingent access to motor stereotypy (i.e., chained schedules) was more effective than time-based access (i.e., multiple schedules) at reducing motor stereotypy, increasing item engagement, and establishing stimulus control for both participants. We systematically replicated Slaton and Hanley with 2 participants by a) targeting vocal stereotypy, b) including response interruption and redirection as a treatm

Rett's syndrome(RS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by exclusive occurrence in females, autistic behavior, dementia, gait ataxia, loss of purposeful use of the hands with stereotypic hand movement, and seizures. Initially RS was considered to be very rare; however, recent reports suggest that the prevalence is considerably higher and occurrence is world-wide. Because the pathophysiological process remains unknown, the diagnosis of RS is based mainly on its characteristic clinical features and course. We experienced two cases of RS which, to our knowledge, are the firs

INTRODUCTION: Rett syndrome (RS) is a progressive neurological disorder that is diagnosed by essential, supportive and exclusion clinical criteria, and development takes place in four stages. It has been shown to be caused by de novo mutations of a gene located in the long arm of the dominant X chromosome that codes for the methyl CpG binding protein (MECP2). It has been observed that girls with classic RS (CRS) present distinguishing nuances with respect to the age of onset of the different criteria and as regards the progression of the disorder. Taking the ability or failure to walk as a ref

BACKGROUND: This case series highlights the connection between childhood intense imagery movements (IIM) and adult-reported maladaptive daydreaming (MD). Motor stereotypies occur in typically developing children and also with co-occurring neurodevelopmental differences. A subgroup with complex motor stereotypies reports accompanying intense imagery, often enhanced by the movements. This phenomenon can persist into adulthood and, in some cases, will need active management to prevent significant distress and impairment.
CASES: Six adults, self-reporting maladaptive daydreaming associated with s

We report two cases of complex movement disorders induced by fluoxetine. A 72-year-old woman developed rhythmic palatal movements, myoclonus, chorea, and possibly dystonia after 2 years of therapy with fluoxetine. On withdrawal of fluoxetine, the movements abated after 5 days and did not recur. The second patient, a 58-year-old man, developed myoclonic jerking and rapid, stereotypic movements of his toes after a year of fluoxetine therapy. These complex movements have not been reported previously as an adverse effect of fluoxetine.

The stereotyped movement of hands, one of the core symptoms of the Rett syndrome (RS), was analyzed to study the pathophysiology. The development of hand function was delayed after mid-infancy and handedness was undetermined in most cases. Before the onset of the pathognomonic stereotypy, patients showed excessive or abnormal behaviors of hands and mouth, such as patting or licking hands, etc. The useful hand function was lost just before or after the onset of stereotypy. The characteristic "hand wringing" movement at midline became apparent from 8 months to 3 years of age. The synchronous han

Elopement is a common and potentially dangerous form of problem behavior. Results of a functional analysis found that the elopement of a child with autism was maintained by access to stereotypy in the form of door play. We implemented functional communication training and contingency-based delays dependent on the absence of elopement and increased the amount of time the participant waited prior to engaging in stereotypy. We also conducted treatment-extension probes, with the participant waiting up to 10 min without elopement.

A number of studies have shown that response interruption and redirection (RIRD) decreases immediate engagement in targeted stereotypic behaviors; however, its effects on untargeted stereotypy have not yet been studied, and its effects following removal of treatment are unclear. We evaluated the immediate and subsequent effects of RIRD on targeted motor stereotypy, as well as untargeted but higher probability vocal stereotypy, of two participants diagnosed with autism, using a three-component multiple-schedule design. Treatment with RIRD decreased immediate engagement in motor stereotypy for b

Oculogyric crisis (OGC) is an acute dystonia which can occur after initiation of antipsychotic treatment. Stereotypic paroxysmal psychiatric symptoms have been described along with OGC that resolve spontaneously when the later remits. We report a case of tardive OGC associated with zuclopenthixol in which there were associated paroxysmal auditory pseudohallucinations.

Tics and stereotypies are the most common pathological repetitive complex motor behaviors occurring during the neurodevelopmental period. Although they may appear transiently during development without acquiring a pathological status, when they become chronic they may be distressing, socially impairing, or even, in the case of malignant tics, potentially physically harmful. Despite a certain similarity in their phenomenology, physicians should be able to distinguish them for their different variability over time, topographical distribution, association with sensory manifestations, and relation

Central disorders of hypersomnolence are characterized by daily periods of irrepressible need to sleep or daytime lapses into sleep, as defined in the current version of the International Criteria of Sleep Disorders. Thus, the unifying symptom is excessive daytime sleepiness which is not caused by any other sleep-wake disorder. Relevant disorders including narcolepsy type 1 and 2, idiopathic hypersomnia, Kleine-Levin syndrome, and insufficient sleep syndrome will be discussed. Other central disorders of hypersomnolence include hypersomnias due to medical or psychiatric disorders or because of

There are at least four phenomenologically different types of movement disorders that fall under the rubric of tardive dyskinesia: a) classical TD which is choreatic in speed of movement and stereotypic in pattern, b) tardive akathisia, c) withdrawal emergent syndrome, which presents as true chorea and d) tardive dystonia which presents with dystonic movement and postures. This paper reviews the main treatments of tardive dyskinesia. The drugs utilized have been considered according to their mechanism of action.
