Stereotypical fingertip trajectories during grasp.

The kinematics of movement of all five digits was analyzed during reach-and-grasp tasks for a variety of objects. Ten healthy subjects performed 20 trials involving the grasp of five objects of distinct size and shape. Joint angles were recorded, and digit trajectories were computed using forward kinematics. For a given subject, fingertip trajectories were consistent across trials. The different-sized objects largely produced movement along different portions of a stereotypical trajectory described by a logarithmic spiral. The spirals fit the actual finger positions with a mean error across al

[Dynamic stereotype as a systemic property of the brain].

Based on the theory of functional systems, the author has developed I. P. Pavlov's idea on the dynamic stereotype--"reality imprints". The parameters of reality, and the results of actions in particular, that meet the leading requirements of living organisms are shown to be dynamically imprinted as molecular engrams of an acceptor of results of actions on the structures involved in dominating motivation. Dominating motivations play a key role in extracting early formed acceptor engrams of results of activities in different functional systems.

Heart rate responses to feeding of both loose-housed and tethered sows, some of which engaged in persistent behavioral stereotypies, were re … er basal heart rates nor heart rates following naloxone or carazolol differed between high- and low-stereotyping sows. In Experiment 2, using sows tethered for 1-2 months, high-stereotyping sows had lower basal heart rates than low-stereotyping sows. Marked reductions in heart rate caused by a beta-adrenoreceptor blocker did not lead to any change in stereotyp …

[Periodic EEG discharges of stereotyped morphology].

Clinical course of disease and results of EEG examinations of 6 patients with severe brain disturbances of various aetiology provided grounds for discussion on the phenomenon of periodic stereotyped EEG discharges (PSD) which is of considerable diagnostic value in some cases. The variability in appearance of these discharges, in their form and duration of intervals between them are stressed--the last parameter varied in own material from 0.5 to 8 sec. The appearance of PSD may indicate increased convulsive excitability of the cortical and subcortical structures of the gray matter. The prognost

Stereotypes as prototypes in children's gender concepts.

How do gender stereotypes shape prototypes across development? In the current pre-registered study with children ages 3- to 10-years-old and adults (N = 257), participants made judgements about which members of gender categories (boys and girls) and animal categories (for comparison) were the most representative and informative about their kinds, using simplified scales of five category members varying on a stereotypical feature (e.g., girls wearing more or less pink). Young children chose boys and girls with extreme stereotypical features (e.g., the girl in head-to-toe pink) as both represent

The Gendered Nature and Malleability of Gamer Stereotypes.

Video gaming is seen as a male space. Female gamers are seen as atypical, have their competence challenged, and face more harassment than male gamers do. This precarious position is increasingly problematic as video gaming is now one of the most prevalent leisure activities, providing an opportunity to both forge and maintain friendships, and to achieve social status and career opportunities. We argue that the marginalization of female gamers is driven by masculine gamer stereotypes. We investigate the content and gendered nature of gamer stereotypes as well as their malleability in response t

Adult-onset stereotypical motor behaviors.

Stereotypies have been defined as non-goal-directed movement patterns repeated continuously for a period of time in the same form and on multiple occasions, and which are typically distractible. Stereotypical motor behaviors are a common clinical feature of a variety of neurological conditions that affect cortical and subcortical functions, including autism, tardive dyskinesia, excessive dopaminergic treatment of Parkinson's disease and frontotemporal dementia. The main differential diagnosis of stereotypies includes tic disorders, motor mannerisms, compulsion and habit. The pathophysiology of

Stereotypic movement disorder: easily missed.

AIM: To expand the understanding of stereotypic movement disorder (SMD) and its differentiation from tics and autistic stereotypies. METHOD: Forty-two children (31 males, mean age 6y 3mo, SD 2y 8mo; 11 females, mean age 6y 7mo, SD 1y 9mo) consecutively diagnosed with SMD, without-self-injurious behavior, intellectual disability, sensory impairment, or an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), were assessed in a neuropsychiatry clinic. A list of probe questions on the nature of the stereotypy was administered to parents (and to children if developmentally ready). Questionnaires administered include

Automatic activation of exercise and sedentary stereotypes.

We examined the automatic activation of "sedentary" and "exerciser" stereotypes using a social prime Stroop task. Results showed significantly slower response times between the exercise words and the exercise control words and between the sedentary words and the exercise control words when preceded by an attractive exerciser prime. Words preceded by a normal-weight exerciser prime showed significantly slower response times for sedentary words over sedentary control words and exercise words. An overweight sedentary prime resulted in significantly slower response times for sedentary words over e

The development of language and literacy: evaluating the stereotypes.

People hold many stereotypes about the development of language and reading. We review current data concerning three stereotypes: (1) Girls learn language faster than boys; (2) Biological factors determine the time course of language acquisition; and (3) Dyslexia is a visual problem involving the reversal of letters. In each case, recent data leads to a different picture of the acquisition of language and literacy and deepens our understanding of the processes involved.

[Primary versus secondary stereotypic movements].

Stereotypic movements are repetitive patterns of movements whose physiopathology and relations to other neurobehavioural disorders are still only poorly understood. In this paper our aim is to distinguish between primary stereotypic movements, which are the sole manifestation of an anomaly, while the complementary examinations, except for those involving molecular genetics, are normal; associated stereotypic movements, when they meet primary disorder criteria but there are other coexisting independent neurological signs, that is to say, they are neither the cause nor the consequence of the mov

Structural and environmental characteristics of stereotyped behaviors.

Structural and environmental characteristics of multiple topographies of stereotypic behaviors shown by 8 individuals with developmental disabilities are described. Analysis of structural characteristics show that the parameters of stereotyped behavior (percentage of time, bout length, and bout length variability) were highly correlated. Analysis of the influence of environmental variables indicated that topographies of stereotyped behaviors were more likely to occur under conditions of low stimulation and less likely during conditions involving social contact. Individuals whose stereotyped be

Fluvoxamine for stereotypic behavior in patients with dementia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the effects of treatment with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluvoxamine on three patients with advanced dementia who developed a stereotypic movement disorder. CASE SUMMARY: Three patients in a skilled nursing facility were referred by their primary physicians for psychiatric consultation to assist with the management of stereotypic behaviors. The patients received a standard medical, neurologic, and psychiatric workup for dementia. Two of the patients were diagnosed with dementia of the Alzheimer type and the other patient was diagnosed with vascular demen

[The melancholy Spaniard: notes for the interpretation of a stereotype].

Included in the traditional typology of nations, the image of the melancholy Spaniard is a cultural stereotype which appears with a remarkable continuity since the Spanish Golden Age. Developed by foreigners--particularly by the French--this stereotype is also adopted by the Spaniards themselves. It is then necessary to inquire about the persistance of this stereotype through-out the centuries and to examine how--and why--the Spaniards did adhere to the image given by foreigners and the typology of nations. The examination of this stereotype aims at analyzing its mechanism, at discovering its

Curb Your Positive Stereotypes: Counter-Stereotypical Interventions Improve Attention to Inequality and Discrimination Against Asian Americans.

Despite 1 in 10 Asian Americans living in poverty, their struggles are often overlooked due to the persistence of "model minority" stereotypes. This study investigates whether counter-stereotypical narratives-emphasizing either economic hardship or psychological challenges-can reduce stereotype-driven misperceptions and improve recognition of the inequalities faced by Asian Americans. Using a nationally representative U.S. sample (N = 2,983), these interventions moderated both trait-based beliefs (e.g., Asian Americans are inherently hardworking) and structural beliefs (e.g., Asian Americans e

I'm like you and you're like me: social projection and self-stereotyping both help explain self-other correspondence.

Social projection and self-stereotyping are rival explanations for self-other correspondence, in which people tend to perceive a high degree of similarity between themselves and others. The present research shows that both accounts are correct-that is, that knowledge of the self and knowledge of others are mutually constraining. In Study 1, participants whose self-views were experimentally manipulated revised their judgments of an immediate ingroup. In Study 2, an analogous manipulation of ingroup traits altered participants' self-views. In Study 3, participants who were ascribed a trait readi…

Mental health & gender stereotypes: Experimental evidence.

International statistics reveal a persistent paradox: women receive depression diagnoses at rates two to three times higher than men, yet male suicide rates are two to three times higher than female rates. We investigate whether gender stereotype priming affects self-reported mental health using an experimental design embedded in a representative survey of the Italian population. We show that exposure to the treatment is associated to worse self-reported mental distress, with statistically comparable effects across genders. K-means clustering analysis reveals substantial heterogeneity: treatme
