Essentials of recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), also known as canker sores, is the most common disease of the oral mucosa. Unlike caries and periodontal disease, patients with RAS are unable to prevent it. The clinical picture of RAS is characterized by recurrent episodes of solitary or multiple painful ulcerations without association with systemic diseases. The objective of this review is to present the essential characteristics of RAS, including its definition, pathogenesis, clinical and microscopic characteristics, proposed experimental models and recommended pharmacological management. This understan…

[Immunomorphological characteristics of vesicular stomatitis].

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the immunomorphological characteristics of vesicular stomatitis. The patients were divided into 3 groups: 15 patients with mild stomatitis, 14 patients with moderate stomatitis, 11 patients with severe stomatitis. The cytological smears were stained by Papanicolaou method. We have evaluated indexes of maturation (MI), keratinisation (KI), destruction (DI) and inflammation-destruction (IDI). The immunocytochemistry was used to evaluate the local immune responses. Anti-CD20 (pan-B marker), Anti-CD3 (pan-T marker), CD4 (marker of T helper), CD8 (marker…

AIDS and Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis.

UNLABELLED: The immunodeficiency state in HIV infected patients has been the cause of severe episodes of Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS). AIM: Our study aims to establish correlation between the manifestations of RAS and the immunosuppression state caused by HIV infection, through counting of CD4+ cells, CD8+ cells, CD4+:CD8+ cells ratio and viral load. STUDY DESIGN: Series study. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Ninety-four HIV infected patients (25 women and 69 men) with RAS were evaluated in the ENT Department of the University of Sao Paulo-Medical School from January 1998 to December 2003. The …

Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis and stomatitis.

Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis is a rare clinical condition associated with variable cutaneous and mucosal eruptions such as urticaria, erythema multiforme, and eczema. Exacerbation is influenced by hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle. The patient described in this report had recurrent cyclic lesions on the skin, oral mucosa, and lips that appeared just before regular menstruation and persisted until a few days after. During each cycle, the eruptions appeared at the previously affected sites, mimicking the clinical feature of a fixed drug eruption. This rare phenomenon is attributed to

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis. An update.

Recurrent aphthous ulceration or recurrent aphthous stomatitis is the most common oral mucosal disease known to human beings. Despite much clinical and research attention, the causes remain poorly understood, the ulcers are not preventable, and treatment is symptomatic. The most common presentation is minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis: recurrent, round, clearly defined, small, painful ulcers that heal in 10 to 14 days without scarring. Major recurrent aphthous stomatitis lesions are larger (greater than 5 mm), can last for 6 weeks or longer, and frequently scar. The third variety of recurren…

Ethylene as a Stomatal Signalling Hub: Integrating Hormonal and Stress Signals to Optimize Stomatal Responses.

The gaseous plant hormone ethylene (ET) regulates diverse growth responses and adaptive processes to environmental stimuli. Although the role of ET in stress signalling is well established, its effects on stomatal responses remain paradoxical. ET induces stomatal closure in some contexts yet antagonizes abscisic acid-mediated closure in others. While diverse studies have reported that ET regulates stomatal responses, the differential role of ET in stomatal signalling has not been reconciled into a unified framework. Here, we synthesize current evidence into a bidirectional model of ET-dependen

The maize aquaporin ZmPIP1;6 enhances stomatal opening and CO2- and ABA-induced stomatal closure.

The plasma membrane aquaporin ZmPIP1;6 is expressed in maize stomatal complexes, with higher expression during the day than at night. To elucidate the role of ZmPIP1;6 in gas exchange and stomatal movement, it was expressed in maize (inbred line B104) under the control of the p35S promoter (overexpression) or its native promoter fused with mYFP (monomeric yellow fluorescent protein) cDNA (mYFP-ZmPIP1;6). In stomatal complexes of the mature zone of the leaf, mYFP-ZmPIP1;6 showed higher expression in subsidiary cells than in guard cells, and light and dark treatments influenced its subcellular l
