LongoVital (LV) (DK. reg. no. 5178/75) is a herbal based tablet enriched with recommended doses of vitamins. The present study was undertaken to investigate prevention of recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU) during daily intake of LV for six months as compared with placebo in a double-blind, randomised clinical, cross-over 1-year study. The population comprised 29 otherwise healthy minor RAU patients (18F, 11M) mean age 36 (18-67), with an estimated average number of recurrences the previous year of 12.8 (3-30). The number of recurrences was significantly reduced on treatment with LV during the

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the results of patients, with a chief complaint of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), who were found to have zinc deficiency as the predisposing factor and received appropriate replacement therapy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted using data from the medical records of patients with a chief complaint of RAS. Patients with potential ulcer-causing conditions were excluded. All patients were intraorally examined to rule out trauma-associated aetiologies. Blood tests were ordered to measure total blood count, serum tran

BACKGROUND: Specific pathogenic bacteria have been implicated in recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), a chronic inflammatory condition characterised by ulcerations in the oral mucosa. However, the aetiology behind this condition still remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: The buccal microbiota of patients with RAS was compared to that of control subjects to investigate its potential role for this condition.
DESIGN: Buccal swabs were obtained from non-ulcerative areas of 60 patients, of whom 42 patients had lesions at the time of sampling, and 60 healthy age- and gender-matched controls. Bacterial DNA

PURPOSE: A multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted to determine the efficacy of an experimental dentifrice on the prevention of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 3-month pretrial period was used to self-record data pertaining to the frequency, ulcer size, duration, and pain associated with ulcers. Thirty-six participants, who reported at least 3 RAS episodes or 30 days with RAS during the pretrial period, completed the study. Following a stratified randomization for age, sex and disease severity, the participants receiv

BACKGROUND: Recent investigations have highlighted autoimmune origins and abnormal immune responses; particularly those related to T cell-mediated immunity and elevated T lymphocyte cells in the oral mucosa. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) and autoimmune thyroid diseases (ATDs) in an Iranian population.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed on 102 patients diagnosed with ATD (cases) and 102 healthy patients (controls) who had been referred for the routine dental treatment. All participants were asked for the history of RAS and t

Introduction Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common ulcer of idiopathic etiology but is recurrent, causing painful ulcers in the non-keratinized mucosa. The disease is commonly seen in people aged 10-40 years. The etiology of RAS has yet to be well established, but several risk factors that lead to the development of RAS have been proven in the literature. With an unknown etiology, developing a definitive cure and maintaining disease remission remains challenging. An epidemiological survey will shed some light on the disease's prevalence, which could provide insights into disease mana

OBJECTIVE: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the major finding of Behçet's disease as well as an inflammatory disease. We compared the choroidal thickness (CT) in patients with RAS with healthy volunteers.
METHODS: Patients with RAS (n = 34) and age- and sex-matched controls (n = 34) were evaluated using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). CT measurements were executed at 3 different points (subfoveal, nasal, and temporal). Laboratory parameters were determined for patients and controls.
RESULTS: The mean subfoveal CT in the RAS and control groups were 356.7 ± 91.7 μm an

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a disease marked by painful oral lesions on the buccal and labial mucosa or tongue. Drug delivery systems (DDS) for RAS include topical forms that manage wound healing, cover the ulcer, and relieve the associated pain. DDS targeting the oral mucosa face a major challenge, especially the short residence times in the mouth due to the effect of "saliva wash-out", which continually removes the drug. The objective of this review is to study the development of preparation forms and delivery systems of various types and preparations that have been used for RAS m

Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome, the most common periodic disorder of childhood, presents with the cardinal symptoms of periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis typically before age 5. This review presents the recent literature on PFAPA and summarizes key findings in the pathogenesis, evaluation, and treatment of the disease. Theories surrounding the pathogenesis of PFAPA include a faulty innate immunologic response in conjunction with dysregulated T-cell activation. A potential genetic link is also under consideration. BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common oral mucosal diseases in many parts of the world. However, there is very limited published clinical evidence for the therapies used in this condition. This could be partly due to the difficulty in evaluating the efficacy of oral ulcer treatment objectively. In this paper, we present a method for assessing and monitoring the severity of oral ulcers before and after treatment.
METHODS: Six ulcer characteristics, number, size, duration, ulcer-free period, site and pain, were used to generate an ulcer severity score (USS).

Oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) is reported to be effective in treatment of recurrent herpes simplex (RHS). According to our observation during recent years, OPV was not only effective in management of RHS but also in some patients with concomitant recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) reducing its severity and frequency. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of OPV in the management of RAS. In a longitudinal, case--control study 48 patients with RAS were recruited. Twenty patients received OPV and 28 patients received placebo. OPV was administered in a dose of 4 drops at monthly

Histologic quantitation of leukocytes in biopsies of recurrent aphthous ulcers revealed at least two morphologically-distinct inflammatory infiltrates. Lymphocytes were found consistently in pre-ulcerative lesions and in the expanding margins of the developing ulcer. In contrast, polymorphonuclear leukocytes predominated only in areas of frank ulceration.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common cause of painful ulcers of the oral mucosa, affecting approximately 10 to 20% of the population. It is characterized by recurrent, well-demarcated superficial ulcers located on non-keratinized mucosa, which heal spontaneously within one to two weeks. Three clinical subtypes are classically described: minor aphthae (the most common form), major aphthae, and herpetiform aphthae. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, but it is essential to rule out other causes of oral ulcers (traumatic, infectious, autoimmune, neoplastic) and to identify secondar
