Lemierre's Syndrome of the Uterus: A Case of Fusobacterium necrophorum and Streptococcus anginosus Septic Postpartum Endomyometritis.

We report a genital tract Fusobacterium necrophorum and Streptococcus anginosus postpartum infection causing Lemierre's syndrome in a 17-year-old female. This resulted in sepsis, endomyometritis, oophoritis, thrombosis of the right ovarian vein, thrombocytopenia and hysterectomy. Prompt recognition leading to aggressive medical/surgical management of postpartum infection is vital to preserve fertility.

Fournier's gangrene with Streptococcus Anginosus in the setting of hidrandenitis suppurativa perineal abscess: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Fournier's gangrene is a rare but life-threatening form of necrotizing soft tissue infection involving the perineal, genital, or perianal region, commonly caused by a mix of aerobic and anaerobic organisms. Initially discovered in dental abscesses, Streptococcus anginosus have been increasingly reported in pyogenic and systemic infections with abscess formation. We present a rare case of perineal abscess that developed into Fournier's gangrene in which the causative pathogen isolated was S. anginosus. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 58-year-old male with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes, hy…

[Pyogenic infections with different locations caused by Streptococcus anginosus alone or in association with anaerobic bacteria].

Isolation and identification of S. anginosus from pathologic products are possible to be realised in informed clinical laboratory, allowing so a better knowledge of these infections' incidences and on adequate treatment. The authors' report 11 cases of pyogenic infection caused by S. anginosus. Five out of these 11 cases evaluated as mixed infections, S. anginosus being associated with anaerobic bacteria. 10 children hospitalised in surgery Department of Children Hospital had infections with different localisations; necrotizing fasciitis, preknee cap abscess, generalised peritonitis, abscess p

Spontaneous intramedullary abscesses caused by Streptococcus anginosus: two case reports and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary abscesses are rare infections of the spinal cord. Intramedullary abscesses often have a complex presentation, making a high index of suspicion essential for prompt diagnosis and management. CASE PRESENTATION: We present two cases of intramedullary abscesses referred to and ultimately managed at our institution. Delayed diagnosis occurred in both instances due to the rarity of intramedullary abscesses and their propensity to mimic other pathologies. For both patients, prompt surgical management and the rapid institution of broad-spectrum antibiotics were critical in

Fournier's Gangrene with Edwardsiella tarda: A Gas Production Case by Bacterial Synergism with Streptococcus anginosus.

Edwardsiella tarda is an anaerobe associated with freshwater and marine life. Necrotizing soft tissue infection caused by E. tarda is rare, … surgery, an incision at the posterior scrotum revealed extensive fascia necrosis, and E. tarda and Streptococcus anginosus were identified. We speculated the gas production in this case to be the product of a mixed infection of aerobes and anaerobes, which acted synergistically to induce bacterial growth. Timely surgical debridement and antibiotic therapy led to the pat …

A rare case of Streptococcus anginosus infectious intracranial aneurysm: Proper management of a poor prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Infectious intracranial aneurysms (IIAs), sometimes referred to as cerebral mycotic aneurysms, are an uncommon but feared compilation of bacterial endocarditis, occurring in up to 5% of all bacterial endocarditis cases. While IIAs carry a low risk of rupture, a ruptured mycotic aneurysm carries devastating neurologic consequences with up to an 80% mortality rate secondary to subarachnoid and intracerebral hemorrhage. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 69-year-old man undergoing antibacterial therapy for Streptococcus anginosus endocarditis with aortic insufficiency and root abscess presented to …

Severe Diverticulitis With Streptococcus anginosus Bacteremia Complicated by Native Hip Septic Arthritis and Subacromial Bursitis.

A 38-year-old man was admitted for severe diverticulitis complicated by Streptococcus anginosus bacteremia. A CT of the abdomen and pelvis on admission was significant for the additional finding of several hepatic abscesses and a small left hip effusion. On examination, the passive and active range of motion of his left hip and shoulder was limited and painful. A hepatic abscess drain was placed, with aspirate cultures yielding Streptococcus anginosus. Additionally, a left hip arthrocentesis was performed with cultures yielding Streptococcus anginosus. A left shoulder arthrocentesis did not yi…

Development of a Novel Multi-Epitope Vaccine Against Streptococcus anginosus Infection via Reverse Vaccinology Approach.

Streptococcus anginosus is an opportunistic pathogen known for its capability to cause a broad range of infections, posing a significant and growing global health concern. Alongside enhancing diagnostic capabilities and bolstering public health initiatives, developing a safe and effective vaccine represents a promising strategy to tackle this health challenge. In this paper, we employed an array of bioinformatics tools to engineer a subunit vaccine that exhibits high immunogenicity against S. anginosus. After constructing the multi-epitope vaccine, we subsequently predicted its secondary and t…

Comparative Genome Analysis of the Daptomycin-Resistant Streptococcus anginosus Strain J4206 Associated with Breakthrough Bacteremia.

Streptococcus anginosus is a member of the normal oral flora that can become a pathogen causing pyogenic infections in humans. The genome of daptomycin-resistant strain J4206, originally isolated from a patient suffering from breakthrough bacteremia and septic shock at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, was determined. The circular genome is 2,001,352 bp long with a GC content of 38.62% and contains multiple mobile genetic elements, including the phage-like chromosomal island SanCI that mediates a mutator phenotype, transposons, and integrative conjugative elements. …

Cell-Free DNA Reveals Hidden Streptococcus anginosus in Cryptogenic Purulent Pericarditis in a Young Adult.

BACKGROUND Bacterial purulent pericarditis is rare and can be fatal if not treated appropriately. Streptococcus anginosus can cause invasive and cryptogenic infections, and purulent pericarditis is an uncommon presentation. Alcohol abuse can be a risk factor for abscesses caused by this agent. Cell-free DNA testing is a noninvasive method that has great potential in cases of serious infections in which pathogens are not easily identifiable by traditional microbiological techniques. CASE REPORT A 27-year-old man reported alcohol abuse and was hospitalized for acute pericarditis without signs of…

Extracellular Vesicles of Streptococcus anginosus Mediate Gastritis via Epithelial Barrier Disruption and Macrophage-driven Inflammation.

Recent studies suggest Streptococcus anginosus (SA) contributes to gastric disease beyond Helicobacter pylori, yet its pathogenic mechanisms remain unclear. This study demonstrates that SA-derived extracellular vesicles (SA-EVs) accumulate in gastric tissue, enter epithelial cells, and induce acute gastritis characterized by neutrophil infiltration and elevated cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-17A). Chronic exposure leads to sustained inflammation, tight junction disruption (Claudin-18, Occludin, ZO-1), and mucosal damage. Proteomic analysis identified TMPC and FBP62 as virulence-associated proteins…

Widespread pylephlebitis and infective thromboembolism due to Streptococcus anginosus-related appendiceal rupture: A case report.

Streptococcus anginosus group is increasingly being recognised as a cause of invasive infections with a propensity to cause pyogenic abscesses. The most common sites of infection described include intra-abdominal, skin and soft tissues and bloodstream. Prompt identification of this bacteria as a cause of pyogenic disease is needed to appropriately commence antibiotic therapy, usually with beta-lactams. We describe an atypical case of Streptococcus anginosus infection with pylephlebitis, widespread infective thromboembolism and presumed mycotic pseudoaneurysm related to an appendiceal rupture. …

Streptococcus anginosus (milleri) Group Strains Isolated in Poland (1996-2012) and their Antibiotic Resistance Patterns.

Streptococcus anginosus, Streptococcus intermedius and Streptococcus constellatus form a group of related streptococcal species, namely the Streptococcus Anginosus Group (SAG). The group, previously called "milleri" had been rarely described until 1980/1990 as source of infections. Nowadays SAG bacteria are often described as pathogens causing predominantly purulent infections. The number of infections is highly underestimated, as SAG strains are often classified in the microbiology laboratory as less virulent "viridans streptococci" Epidemiological situation regarding SAG infections in Poland…

Streptococcus anginosus of the urogenital tract: evidence of the same strain across anatomical sites of the same females.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus anginosus has been found to colonize multiple anatomical sites of the human body, including the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, skin, vagina, blood, and urinary tract. It is frequently isolated from catheterized urine samples obtained from adult females most often with lower urinary tract symptoms, but also on occasion from those without symptoms. Our prior genome analysis of 166 S. anginosus genomes identified two distinct groups, one - which we here call group Urinae - exhibits a tropism for the urinary tract. RESULTS: Here we sequenced 100 isolates collected …

A Case of Streptococcus anginosus Brain Abscess Caused by Contiguous Spread from Sinusitis in an Immunocompetent Patient.

Brain abscesses are infections of the brain parenchyma that can arise from either contiguous spread from local infection or by hematogenous spread from a distant site. Streptococcus anginosus of the Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) is a commensal microbe of the mucosae of the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and urogenital tract. We present a case of mono-microbial brain abscess caused by contiguous spread from relatively asymptomatic sinusitis that initially presented as a subdural hemorrhage on computed tomography. A 70-year-old male presented, obtunded, with a Glasgow Coma Score of e…

Streptococcus anginosus-generated succinate promotes the progression of gastric cancer via the succinate/SUCNR1/ABRAXAS1 axis.

Streptococcus anginosus (S. anginosus) has recently been implicated in promoting gastric carcinogenesis, but the underlying mechanism of S. anginosus and its metabolites in gastric carcinogenesis is still unclear. We found that S. anginosus is enriched in gastric cancer (GC) and that a high abundance of S. anginosus is associated with a poor prognosis of GC. Both S. anginosus and S. anginosus conditioned medium (S. a CM) promoted the proliferation, invasion, and migration of GC cells, inhibited cell apoptosis in vitro, and aggravated gastric inflammation and mucus metaplasia in vivo. Succinate…
