Streptococcus bovis is the rare cause of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in decompensated cirrhosis. S. bovis bacteremia has long been known to be associated with colon cancer. We describe seven patients and review the seven previous reports of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis patients with S. bovis infection. Most of the patients had cirrhosis and presented with fever, abdominal pain, abdominal distention, and jaundice. Colonic adenomatous polyps with dysplastic change were found in 18.2% of the patients. The approach to this group of patients requires diagnostic paracentesis, blood cultur

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus gallolyticus subspecies pasteurianus (SGP), a subtype of Streptococcus bovis , is an uncommon but important cause of neonatal sepsis. Although uncommon, SGP infections during infancy have been associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality.
METHODS: This is a systematic review and meta-analysis of available literature on the clinical course and outcomes of infants with SGP infection. Studies were identified using the following MeSH keywords: " Streptococcus gallolyticus ," " Streptococcus bovis ," "newborn" and "infant." Data including perinatal factors

As a potent, pleiotropic regulatory protein in Gram-positive bacteria, catabolite control protein A (CcpA) mediates the transcriptional control of carbohydrate metabolism in Streptococcus bovis, a lactate-producing bacterium that plays an essential role in rumen acidosis in dairy cows. Although the rumen uptake of carbohydrates is multi-substrate, the focus of S. bovis research thus far has been on the glucose. With the aid of gene deletion, whole-genome sequencing, and transcriptomics, we have unraveled the role of CcpA in carbohydrate metabolism, on the one hand, and acidosis, on the other,

BACKGROUND: Common etiological agents of neonatal meningitis include group B Streptococcus, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. Here we report a rare pathogen - Streptococcus bovis - causing meningitis in a premature neonate with Down syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-day-old Asian male neonate with Down syndrome presented with a history of high-grade fever, poor sucking, poor cry, and reduced activity. On admission, he was febrile and had features of circulatory collapse. A cerebrospinal fluid examination confirmed bacterial meningitis and blood culture isolated the causative organi

OBJECTIVES: Streptococcus bovis bacteremia has been associated with gastrointestinal diseases, especially colon cancer, neoplastic colon polyps, and other malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract. Studies have suggested an association with chronic liver parenchymal and biliary tract disorders. We report a series of patients with S. bovis bacteremia in a county hospital in a US city on the border of Mexico to examine the demographic and clinical associations.
METHODS: We characterized the demographics, clinical features, and the endoscopic and histopathologic findings in all patients with bl

Bacteraemia or endocarditis caused by Streptococcus bovis, a non-enterococcal group D streptococcus, is a very common finding in patients suffering from intestinal tumours or other colon diseases. A case of a patient with a laternal neck abscess caused by S. bovis is reported. During the treatment the patient was found to have colonic malignant lesions. The problems in the appropriate diagnosis and the possible correlation between these two clinical entities are presented and discussed.

A case of pulmonary endocarditis caused by Streptococcus D bovis in a female patient with colorectal adenocarcinoma is reported. The M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiographic and pulsed doppler ultrasound findings are described. A review of the literature shows that Streptococcus D bovis pulmonary endocarditis is rare. Any septicaemia or endocarditis caused by this organism calls for invasive exploration of the digestive tract, and especially the colon.

There is a positive association between bacteraemia with Streptococcus bovis-Streptococcus equinus complex (SBSEC) and colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the relationship between the timing of SBSEC bacteraemia and CRC is not well-established. Associations with other gastrointestinal cancers have also been suggested. Using national registries, we retrospectively examined the incidence of CRC and other gastrointestinal cancers after SBSEC-bacteraemia in Sweden 2010-2019, and analysed the timing, characteristics, and prognosis of diagnosed CRC. Individuals with SBSEC-bacteraemia were matched to r

Streptococcus gallolyticus LL009 produces gallocin D, a narrow spectrum two component bacteriocin with potent activity against vancomycin-resistant enterococci. Gallocin D is distinct from gallocin A, a separate two component bacteriocin produced by S. gallolyticus. Although the gene clusters encoding gallocin A and gallocin D have a high degree of gene synteny, the structural genes are highly variable and appear to have undergone gene shuffling with other streptococcal species. Gallocin D was analysed in laboratory-based experiments. The mature peptides are 3,343 ± 1 Da and 3,019 ± 1 Da and c

Although Streptococcus bovis/equinus complex (SBSEC) lysogens are prevalent in the rumen, studies on prophages experimentally induced from these strains are limited. Herein, we screened inducible prophages from ruminant-derived SBSEC strains, including the newly reported S. ruminicola, leading to the characterization of a representative temperate phage. We successfully induced a temperate phage (vB_SbS-proRumen) from S. ruminicola KCCM 90354, which has a broad host range, capable of lysing several SBSEC strains and other lactic acid bacteria. The vB_SbS-proRumen belongs to the Siphovirus, char

BACKGROUND: Even though the relationship between certain bacterial infections and neoplastic lesions of the colon is well-recognized, this knowledge has not been sufficiently translated into routine practice yet.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 51-year-old man who was admitted to our Surgical Department due to rectal bleeding and abdominal pain. Preoperative colonoscopy, staging exams and subsequent surgery demonstrated a stenotic adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon, invading the left urinary tract and the homolateral bladder wall, with regional lymph nodes involvement and massiv

Streptococcus bovis/equinus complex (SBSEC) is one of the most important lactic acid-producing rumen bacteria causing subacute ruminal acidosis. Despite the significance of the ruminal bacteria, lytic bacteriophages (phages) capable of infecting SBSEC in the rumen have been rarely characterized. Hence, we describe the biological and genomic characteristics of two lytic phages (designated as vB_SbRt-pBovineB21 and vB_SbRt-pBovineS21) infecting various SBSEC species, including the newly reported S. ruminicola. The isolated SBSEC phages were morphologically similar to Podoviridae and could infect

Organisms previously classified as Streptococcus bovis (i.e., the S. bovis/S. equinus complex) are common in cattle feces, but may also act as opportunistic pathogens. In the current work, Streptococcus infantarius subsp. coli, a member of this complex, was associated of a cluster of calves that died within hours of injection with a modified live viral vaccine. Within 12 h of vaccination of 46 calves at a cow/calf operation, 4 calves had died, 3 calves were ill, and 1 unvaccinated cow was dead. Autopsies were performed on the cow, 2 dead calves, and 1 affected surviving calf, which was euthani

Infection of a total knee arthroplasty with Streptococcus bovis in a 76-year-old man that led to the diagnosis of a bowel carcinoma is reported. Investigation revealed a malignancy in the ascending colon with extension into the adrenal gland. S bovis in conjunction with colonic neoplasia has been reported in several orthopedic conditions: vertebral osteomyelitis, discitis, lateral neck abscess, and osteomyelitis of the ileum. The relationship of S bovis to endocarditis, meningitis, brain abscesses, and peritonitis has also been well described. However, S bovis is a rare pathogen infecting join

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the activity of daptomycin tested against numerous species of viridans group streptococci and Streptococcus bovis, which are associated with wound infections, sepsis, cellulitis, endocarditis, abscesses and dental caries. The incidence of penicillin-resistant (non-susceptible) and MLS(B)-resistant strains among viridans group streptococci often varies by species.
METHODS: The activity of daptomycin was compared with seven other antimicrobial classes using reference broth microdilution and disc diffusion methods tested against 915 bacteraemic isolates of streptococci (8

The Streptococcus bovis group (previously group D streptococci) consists of seven distinct species and subspecies. Definitive identification within the group is important, as certain organisms have been associated with gastrointestinal carcinoma, bacteremia, infective endocarditis, meningitis, biliary tract disease, and carcinoma, among others. Definitive identification, however, remains elusive due to limitations and inconsistencies across commonly used identification platforms in the United States. Here, we compared the performance of standard biochemical (Trek Gram-positive identification [

The association of Streptococcus bovis bacteremia and endocarditis with colonic pathology, mainly neoplastic, is well known. Its relationship with liver disease without evidence of gastrointestinal disease has been rarely described. To analyze the association between S. bovis infection and liver disease, positive blood cultures for this microorganism in hospitalized patients in the Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology Departments from December 1993 until October 1995, have been reviewed. Three cases of S. bovis infection (one bacteremia, two endocarditis) were found. Alcoholic liver disease

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the immune response of WASP- mice to three different pathogens: influenza A virus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Mycobacterium bovis.
METHODS: Primary and secondary T-cell responses to influenza A virus were quantified via tetramer assays. Viral clearance from lung was also measured. Lethality of intranasal inoculation with luminescent S. pneumoniae was assessed by dose escalation and direct luminescence imaging. After intravenous inoculation with M. bovis, residual mycobacteria in lung, liver, and spleen were measured by standard culture methods.
RESULTS: The reduced
