Post-traumatic stress disorder--a scar for life.

The symptoms of flashbacks, nightmares and hypervigilance may be understood by those who have shared or understand a traumatic event, but the duration of such symptoms may well outstretch all expectations. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is serious, and may affect the rest of a sufferer's life. Traumatic situations are ubiquitous in the modern-day world, and can occur in both military and civilian settings. A great deal of research into the development and management of PTSD has been carried out in the past two decades; although many drug treatments and psychotherapeutic approaches have

Post-traumatic stress disorder in the military veteran.

1. Military personnel exposed to war-zone trauma are at risk for developing PTSD. Those at greatest risk are those exposed to the highest levels of war-zone stress, those wounded in action, those incarcerated as prisoners of war, and those who manifest acute war-zone reactions, such as CSR. 2. In addition to problems directly attributable to PTSD symptoms per se, individuals with this disorder frequently suffer from other comorbid psychiatric disorders, such as depression, other anxiety disorders, and alcohol or substance abuse/dependence. The resulting constellation of psychiatric symptoms fr

Use of thioridazine in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a condition that develops in persons who have experienced emotional or physical stress of sufficient magnitude to be extremely traumatic for virtually anyone. This may include natural catastrophes, combat experiences, rape, or other such horrifying events. The three major features of the disorder are reexperiencing the trauma through dreams, emotional numbing, and autonomic instability. To date, several treatment modalities have been used, usually consisting of a combination of psychotherapy and drug treatment. Although controversy exists, antidepressants and

Post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms form a traumatic and non-traumatic stress response dimension.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine whether symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) form a latent dimension reflecting responsivity to life events and whether PTSD symptoms are specific to traumatic life events. METHOD: A 30-year longitudinal study of a general population sample of 987 individuals were assessed for PTSD symptoms, exposure to adverse life events, and a variety of psychosocial measures. PTSD symptoms were tested using a confirmatory factor model and a range of fitted models were used to identify significant predictors of latent PTSD symptoms. RESULTS: The rate of

The Effects of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Combined Mild Traumatic Brain Injury/Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder on Returning Veterans.

United States veterans of the Iraqi (Operation Iraqi Freedom [OIF]) and Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom [OEF]) conflicts have frequently returned from deployment after sustaining mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and enduring stressful events resulting in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A large number of returning service members have been diagnosed with both a history of mTBI and current PTSD. Substantial literature exists on the neuropsychological factors associated with mTBI and PTSD occurring separately; far less research has explored the combined effects of PTSD and mTBI.

Subthreshold post-traumatic stress disorder as a risk factor for post-traumatic stress disorder: results from a sample of USA veterans.

Subthreshold post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is more prevalent than PTSD, yet its role as a potential risk factor for PTSD is unknown. To address this gap, we analysed data from a 7-year, prospective national cohort of USA veterans. Of veterans with subthreshold PTSD at wave 1, 34.3% developed PTSD compared with 7.6% of trauma-exposed veterans without subthreshold PTSD (relative risk ratio 6.4). Among veterans with subthreshold PTSD, specific PTSD symptoms, greater age, cognitive difficulties, lower dispositional optimism and new-onset traumas predicted incident PTSD. Results suggest tha

Distinct correlates of post-traumatic stress disorder and subthreshold post-traumatic stress disorder considering a broad range of adverse experiences.

Background: While not all trauma-exposed individuals develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), many experience severe and enduring emotional effects. In Singapore, no study has investigated the prevalence and correlates of subthreshold PTSD and PTSD using gold-standard clinical interviews. Objectives: This study was the first to examine the prevalence and correlates of PTSD, subthreshold PTSD, and correlates associated while exploring a broad range of adverse experiences, including Criterion A (e.g. physical and sexual abuse) and non-Criterion A (e.g. emotional abuse) events.Method: We rec

What Is the Impact of Unemployment as an Adverse Experience? Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Meta-Analysis.

This meta-analysis examined how unemployment, a psychosocial stressor, influences post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (CPTSD). It specifically explores unemployment as a risk factor for trauma, with emphasis on CPTSD, and investigates economic variables, including the GINI coefficient, as potential moderators. A systematic search in Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed yielded 33 studies comprising more than 57,000 participants. Odds ratios (OR) were computed, and a random-effects model was used to synthesize the findings. Meta-regression analyses were conducted to evaluate th

Oxidative stress markers in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Recent study data support the role of oxidative stress in diverse psychiatric disorders. Oxidative stress results from an oxidant/antioxidant imbalance, an excess of oxidants and/or a depletion of antioxidants. There are numerous studies that indicate that free radicals (FRs) damage neurons, and then play an important role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and depression. Active oxygen can cause considerable damage and disrupt the important physiological functions of proteins, lipids, enzymes and DNA. The aim of our study was to investigate the possible differences in the concentration o

Trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress disorder in bipolar disorder.

INTRODUCTION: There is a lack of data about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in European bipolar patients compared to the US-population. This study was conducted to ascertain the rates and types of traumatic events and PTSD in bipolar-I disorder. METHODS: Euthymic bipolar patients were screened for lifetime diagnosis of PTSD using the Post-Traumatic Stress Diagnostic Scale and the Clinician Administered Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Scale. RESULTS: A total of 74 patients (m = 30, f = 44) with diagnosis of bipolar-I disorder were assessed. 37 patients (50%) reported no trauma, 22 patien

Post-traumatic stress symptoms, post-traumatic stress disorder, and post-traumatic growth among cancer survivors: a systematic scoping review of interventions.

The detrimental effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms (PTSS) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the benefits of Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG) are well established for cancer survivors. Increased cancer survival rates necessitate an understanding of how these two paradoxical outcomes, PTSS/PTSD and PTG, are targeted through interventions. This systematic scoping review aims to (a) examine existing evidence on interventions targeting PTSS/PTSD and/or PTG among cancer survivors and (b) identify knowledge gaps to inform future research. Following the six steps of a scoping review, 76

Managing Post traumatic Stress Disorder in Eating Disorder Treatment.

Given the potential for a reciprocal and functional relationship between eating disorder (ED) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and the evidence that PTSD is associated with greater drop out from ED treatment and poorer treatment outcomes, addressing PTSD as part of an ED treatment plan is recommended. Options include concurrent, integrated, and transdiagnostic/integrative psychotherapies, as well as pharmacotherapy. Although evidence is in the emerging stage, interventions that specifically address the potential interaction between ED and PTSD symptoms may be preferable to p

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder in patients with somatization disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Given the association between severe childhood trauma, adult somatization and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD), the purpose of the present paper was to assess this syndrome and its clinical correlates in patients with somatization disorder (SD). METHODS: A total of 28 patients (82% women, mean age = 41.7+/-10.1 years) meeting DSM-IV criteria for SD as confirmed by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, Axis I were compared to 28 age- and gender-matched patients with major depression, but without a lifetime diagnosis of SD. They completed the Structured Intervie

[Efficiency of psychological debriefing in preventing post-traumatic stress disorders].

BACKGROUND: Traumatic events are frequently followed by an acute stress reaction that may develop into a post-traumatic stress disorder. An intervention called psychological debriefing has been proposed to prevent these disorders. Although this method is widely used at present, its preventive effect is controversial. This article consist in a review of the studies which evaluated psychological debriefing efficiency in the prevention of post-traumatic stress disorder and associated disorders in adults. METHOD: We carried out a bibliographical search on MEDLINE (1966-2001), PASCAL (1987-2001),

Anxiety sensitivity in relation to post-traumatic stress disorder symptom clusters among young adults with probable post-traumatic stress disorder.

Despite the promise of past research on anxiety sensitivity (AS) and posttraumatic stress, extant work is limited, given (1) most studies consist of non-Hispanic White and middle-aged samples, (2) few have demonstrated incremental validity to general emotional traits and social determinants of health, and (3) limited work has characterized how AS relates to specific Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptom clusters among those with (probable) PTSD. The current study evaluated the role of AS in relation to PTSD symptom clusters among a racially/ethnically diverse sample of young adults with

Traumatic stressors and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in headache patients.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of significant traumatic stressors and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in a headache population. BACKGROUND: Several recent publications have emphasized the relationship between life stressors and/or daily hassles and recurrent headaches. However, little is known about the prevalence and impact of major traumatic stressors in patients with recurrent headaches. METHODS: Eighty patients with either migraine or tension-type headache completed a PTSD checklist. Data were compared with those from patients with chronic ma

[Stellatum ganglion block and post-traumatic stress disorder].

PTSD treatment in Denmark is difficult, with many treatment-resistant patients and a high dropout rate from conventional treatments. This review describes a newer supplementary therapy, stellatum ganglion block (SGB), which may prove to have a good effect by; 1) reducing patients' hyperarousal symptoms such as flashbacks, palpitations and anxiety, and 2) improving patients' ability to process intrusive memories due to increased hippocampal activity, and 3) leading to better compliance with behavioral therapy such as trauma-focused psychotherapy or EMDR.

Mentalization in Asylum Seekers with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

This study explores the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the two major dimensions of mentalization (self and other-oriented) in asylum seekers resettled in Italy. It is important because it is the first study addressing the role of mentalization in asylum seekers with PTSD. Twenty asylum seekers scoring above the cut-off for the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) were contrasted to twenty asylum seekers without PTSD on mentalization and somatization. The Certainty About Mental States Questionnaire (CAMSQ) and the Bradford Somatic Inventory (BSI-21) were used to asse
