Fibroinflammatory pseudotumor of the submandibular gland.

BACKGROUND: Fibroinflammatory pseudotumors infrequently involve the major salivary glands. Much more is known regarding the clinical behavior of orbital pseudotumors, especially their steroid responsiveness. METHODS: A case of fibroinflammatory pseudotumor involving the submandibular gland is presented with its preoperative cytologic and computed tomographic scan features. The lesion had a dramatic response to steroids for residual disease. CONCLUSIONS: If preoperative cytologic features of benign spindle cells with an inflammatory component seen on fine-needle aspiration raise the possibili…

[Malignant oncocytoma of the submandibular gland].

Case report on a malignant oncocytoma of the glandula submandibularis in a 56-year old female patient. Oncocytomas in otorhinolaryngology are very rare, mostly benign tumours appearing mainly in women between 60 and 90 years of age. They comprise oncocytes, which are epithelial cells with abnormally formed cytoplasm. Oncocytes have an acidophilic granular cytoplasm. Electron microscopy reveals a pronounced increase of hypertrophic mitochondria. Besides the benign variants there are also rare cases of malignant forms. Therapy consists of surgical resection.

Mucinous adenocarcinoma of the submandibular gland.

A rare tumor not easily classifiable among published histologic categories for salivary gland tumors is reported. The neoplasm developed within the submandibular gland of a 78-year-old woman with invasion of the mandible and metastasis to regional lymph nodes. Histopathologically, cuboidal cells possessing clear cytoplasm and displaced round nuclei proliferated and exhibited an adenomatous pattern. Many cystic spaces surrounded by tumor cell strands were seen, mucus substance filled in the cystic spaces, and the tumor cells seemed mucus-secreting, but neither epidermoid cells nor papillary app…

[Ultrastructural aspects of the submandibular gland].

The structure of normal human submandibular glands has been studied with the electron microscope. Secretory cells are arranged around a central lumen, and are surrounded by numerous myoepithelial cells, showing tapering process. Intercalated and striated ducts follow secretory units. Striated ducts' cells are characterized by extensive infoldings of the basal plasma membrane, among which numerous mitochondria are aligned. Furthermore, the Authors examine the submandibular gland's innervation.

Metastatic malignancy in the submandibular gland.

Metastatic disease in the major salivary glands has been observed and reported in the literature. Often the site of origin of the primary tu … ly rare in the other major salivary glands. The second reported case of metastatic carcinoma in the submandibular gland is presented here. Our case and the previously reported case are similar in that both primary tumors originated in the breast. The clinical and morphologic features are reviewed.

Actinomycosis and Sialolithiasis in Submandibular Gland.

Actinomycosis is a subacute or chronic suppurative infection caused by Actinomyces species, which are anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria that normally colonize the human mouth and digestive and urogenital tracts. Cervicofacial actinomycosis is the most frequent clinical form of actinomycosis, and is associated with odontogenic infection. Characterized by an abscess and mandibular involvement with or without fistula, but the cervicofacial form of actinomycosis is often misdiagnosed because the presentation is not specific and because it can mimic numerous infectious and non-infectious diseases, i

Lymphoepithelial cyst of the submandibular gland.

Lymphoepithelial cysts are benign, slowly growing unilocular or multilocular lesions that appear in the head and neck. They are also called Branchial cyst. The head and neck sites are the salivary glands(more commonly parotid and rarely submandibular gland) and the oral cavity (usually the floor of the mouth). there are various methods of investigation available today, of which Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) can be used to provide an immediate diagnosis of a lymphoepithelial cyst. The other investigations include, Ultrasonogram, and Computed tomography. It usually occurs due to the proc…

Sialography of the transplanted submandibular gland.

Autologous transplantation of submandibular gland (SMG) is effective for severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS). Sialography is a method for morphological evaluation of the transplanted gland. We recruited 15 patients (15 eyes) with severe KCS who had successfully undergone SMG transplantation. Thirteen patients had normal transplanted SMGs, while two patients were suspected to have obstructive sialadenitis of the transplanted SMG. Sialography was performed in each patient with meglumine diatrizoate. Projections were applied immediately and 5, 7, and 10 min after contrast injection. The median…

Rhabdomyomas of the submandibular and sublingual glands.

Rhabdomyomas are rare benign mesenchymal tumors distinguished in cardiac and extracardiac forms. Extracardiac rhabdomyomas are classified as adult type, fetal type, and the genital type. Adult extracardiac rhabdomyomas are mostly found in the head and neck and usually present a slow growth. We report a case of a patient with a manifestation in the submandibular and sublingual glands.

Nodular fasciitis in the submandibular gland.

Nodular fasciitis (NF) is a benign, proliferative lesion of myofibroblasts. The most common site of the lesion is in the upper extremities or trunk. NF in the head and neck is next in frequency and is the most common site in infants and children. In adults, NF in the submandibular region is very rare. We report a case of a 53-year-old man with a submandibular mass, rapidly growing for 10 days. Cytologic findings revealed a few sheets or clusters of small, uniform spindle cells. The uniform spindle cells had centrally located round to ovoid nucleus, but there were no nuclear atypia and atypical
