Malignant hyperpyrexia and sudden infant death syndrome.

This paper reports three investigations of the suggested relationship between sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and malignant hyperpyrexia (MH). In the first study 151 MH-susceptible families completed a questionnaire designed to identify the incidence of SIDS within their own pedigree. In the second study 106 SIDS families completed a questionnaire designed to identify the incidence of anaesthetic related problems. In the third study, 14 SIDS parents were subjected to muscle biopsy and in vitro halothane contracture and caffeine contracture screening for susceptibility to MH. From the resul

Sudden infant death due to asplenia syndrome.

An apparently healthy 80-day-old boy died suddenly for no apparent reason. The autopsy revealed that the patient had had congenital asplenia, extensive cardiovascular anomalies, and other organ malformations, including trisegmented lungs, hypoplasia of the corpus callosum and cranial bones, a symmetrical liver, accessory hepatic tissue in the adrenal glands, malrotation of the intestine, and hypoplasia of the greater omentum.

Sudden infant death syndrome: congenital copper deficiency.

A previous paper describes specific respiratory toxins likely to be associated with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). This paper describes ultrastructural abnormalities in the lung and other tissues in congenital copper deficiency. Congenital copper deficiency is associated with tissue anoxia defects in the development of myelin through a failure of phospholipid synthesis. Phospholipid is part of the membrane structure of cells. The paucity of elastin is attributed to a loss of lysyl oxidase activity. Hypoventilation is considered a feature of SIDS.

Sudden infant death syndrome. A prospective study.

One hundred twenty-five sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) victims followed up since birth from a large prospective study were compared with matched controls. Some of the future SIDS victims showed evidences of neonatal brain dysfunction including abnormalities in respiration, feeding, temperature regulation, and specific neurologic tests. These abnormalities could not be ralated to events in labor or delivery. A greater proportion of the future victims were mildly underweight for gestational age. The gestations that produced the SIDS victims were characterized by a greater frequency of mothe

Epidemiological comparisons of sudden infant death syndrome with infant apnoea.

A unique opportunity to study proven infant apnoea (PIA) and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) occurrences epidemiologically in 12 Counties in north-western Washington State during the same time period during which 180,017 live births were recorded revealed markedly dissimilar distribution patterns. The overall incidence of SIDS exceeded that of PIA by a factor of 3. Five PIA babies subsequently succumbed to SIDS. Statistical analysis reveals that these five events cannot be explained as random coincidences; they represent 3% of 163 PIA cases but only 1% of 503 SIDS occurrences. Infant apnoe

Novel chemical-physical autopsy investigation in sudden infant death and sudden intrauterine unexplained death syndromes.

Aim: Verify the presence of inorganic nanoparticle entities in brain tissue samples from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)/sudden intrauterine unexplained death syndrome (SIUDS) cases. The presence of inorganic debris could be a cofactor that compromises proper brain tissue functionality. Materials & methods: A novel autopsy approach that consists of neuropathological analysis procedures combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy/field emission gun environmental scanning electron microscopy investigations was implemented on 10 SIDS/SIUDS cases, whereas control samples were obtained from 10

Infant pacifiers for reduction in risk of sudden infant death syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) has been most recently defined as the sudden unexpected death of an infant less than one year of age, with onset of the fatal episode apparently occurring during sleep, that remains unexplained after a thorough investigation, including the performance of a complete autopsy and a review of the circumstances of death and clinical history. Despite the success of several prevention campaigns, SIDS remains a leading cause of infant mortality. In 1994, a 'triple risk model' for SIDS was proposed that described SIDS as an event that results from the int

Layered risk factors for sudden unexpected infant death.

BACKGROUND: Sudden Unexpected Infant Death occurs about once a week in Cook County, Illinois, the second largest county in the United States, where SUID disproportionately affects families from high hardship communities. The Cook County SUID Case Registry was established in 2019 to collect, analyze, and disseminate data to advance SUID prevention. METHODS: Cook County SUID Case Registry data from 2019 to 2023 were analyzed for descriptive characteristics including infant age, race, ethnicity, gestational age, birth weight, maternal age, prenatal/household smoke exposure, and sleep environment

Apnea of prematurity and sudden infant death syndrome.

Apnea is a frequent occurrence in prematurity and its prevalence in the most severely preterm population is indicative of an immature respiratory neural control system. Preterm infants are also at increased risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), which has been associated with similar respiratory neural control dysfunction seen in prematurity. Generally, abnormalities in both central and peripheral mechanisms of respiratory control are thought to be key underlying features of abnormal respiratory system development. Numerous factors contribute to the etiology of apnea and respiratory cont

A possible cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

It is suggested that an orienting response to loud sound causes apnea, which, in already asphyxic infants, triggers a maximal secondary chemoreceptor response, with massive vagal stimulation of the heart, which causes heart arrest.

Long QT syndrome and sudden unexpected infant death.

Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is an inheritable primary electric disease of the heart characterised by abnormally long QT intervals and a propensity to develop atrial and ventricular tachyarrhythmias. It is caused by an inherited channelopathy responsible for sudden cardiac death in individuals with structurally normal hearts. Long QT syndrome can present early in life, and some studies suggest that it may be associated with up to 20% of sudden unexplained infant death (SUID), particularly when associated with external stressors such as asphyxia, which is commonly seen in many infant death scenes. The carotid body in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

The aim of the present study is to provide a review of cytochemical, clinical and experimental data indicating disruption of perinatal carotid body maturation as one of the possible mechanisms underlying SIDS pathogenesis. SIDS victims have been reported to show alterations in respiratory regulation which may partly be ascribed to peripheral arterial chemoreceptors. Carotid body findings in SIDS victims, although not entirely confirmed by other authors, have included reductions in glomic tissue volume and cytoplamic granules of type I cells, changes in cytological composition (higher percentag

Brainstem serotonergic deficiency in sudden infant death syndrome.

CONTEXT: Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is postulated to result from abnormalities in brainstem control of autonomic function and breathing during a critical developmental period. Abnormalities of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT]) receptor binding in regions of the medulla oblongata involved in this control have been reported in infants dying from SIDS. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that 5-HT receptor abnormalities in infants dying from SIDS are associated with decreased tissue levels of 5-HT, its key biosynthetic enzyme (tryptophan hydroxylase [TPH2]), or both. DESIGN, SETTING
