Hazard assessment of commonly used agricultural antibiotics on aquatic ecosystems.

In this study, eleven commonly used antibiotics including sulfonamides, tetracyclines, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, and beta-lactams were evaluated for their acute and chronic aquatic toxicities using standard test organisms e.g., Vibrio fischeri, Daphnia magna, Moina macrocopa, and Oryzias latipes. Among the antibiotics tested for acute toxicity, neomycin was most toxic followed by trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole and enrofloxacin. Sulfamethazine, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, sulfadimethoxine and sulfathiazole were of intermediate toxicity, while ampicillin and amoxicillin were lea…

Direct oxidation of sulfonamides on carbon anode surface at low current density: Effect of R substituents and adsorption ability.

The extensive use of sulfonamides (SAs) in the treatment of respiratory and bacterial infections for humans and animals have triggered their ubiquitous occurrence in environment. Anodic oxidation processes have prominent potential in degrading SAs from wastewater. Herein, carbon cotton (CC) and graphite plate (GP) are applied as anodes to degrade SAs with various R substitutions at low current density (j, 0.42-5 mA/cm2, current intensity 2.5-30 mA). At j = 1.67 mA/cm2, degradation efficiency of sulfathiazole, sulfadiazine, sulfisoxazole, sulfamethoxazole, sulfapyridine, and sulfamethazine reac…

Microcalorimetric investigations of drug-albumin interactions.

Flow microcalorimetry was used to estimate primary binding constants for drug-albumin interactions. Measurements of heat of reaction at two temperatures illustrated the danger of extrapolation for pharmacokinetic purposes of measurements made at temperatures other than 37 degrees. The method could be used to predict competition between two drugs for a single binding site. Major advantages over spectroscopic techniques included direct determinations of thermodynamic parameters, and the use of physiological concentrations of albumin.

Synthesis of benzamide derivatives with thiourea-substituted benzenesulfonamides as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.

The novel compounds with the chemical structure of N-({4-[N'-(substituted)sulfamoyl]phenyl}carbamothioyl)benzamide (1a-g) and 4-fluoro-N-({4-[N'-(substituted)sulfamoyl]phenyl}carbamothioyl)benzamide (2a-g) were synthesized as potent and selective human carbonic anhydrase (hCA) I and hCA II candidate inhibitors. The aryl part was changed to sulfacetamide, sulfaguanidine, sulfanilamide, sulfathiazole, sulfadiazine, sulfamerazine, and sulfametazine. The Ki values of compounds 1a-g were in the range of 20.73 ± 4.32 to 59.55 ± 13.07 nM (hCA I) and 5.69 ± 0.43 to 44.81 ± 1.08 nM (hCA II), whereas th…

Acclimation to ultraviolet irradiation affects UV-B sensitivity of Daphnia magna to several environmental toxicants.

Phototoxicity of several environmental contaminants by UV light has been reported in many studies. Nevertheless, field observations suggest … ic compounds such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (fluoranthene and pyrene), a pharmaceutical (sulfathiazole), or metals (Cd and Cu) under UV-B light. Following the UV-B acclimation, toxicity of metals under UV-B light significantly decreased (P<0.1) suggesting the defense/repair system which might be developed through acclimation. For PAHs and sulfathiazo …

Crystallinity and dissolution rate of tolbutamide solid dispersions prepared by the melt method.

The influence of cooling rate of solid dispersions prepared by the melt method was studied by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Tolbutamide was the model drug investigated, and the carriers included urea and polyethylene glycol 6000. Slow-cooled urea dispersions of tolbutamide demonstrated a complete lack of crystallinity, suggesting the formation of an amorphous material. The rapidly cooled dispersion showed peaks for urea and an absence of drug in the X-ray pattern, suggesting that a true molecular dispersion was formed. The X-ray patterns of rapid- and slow-cooled dispersi
