Role of sympathetic nervous system in activity-induced cerebral perfusion.

Several studies have suggested that autonomic neural control plays a role in regulation of cerebral blood flow (CBF), although the exact role of the sympathetic nervous system on CBF remains debated. The effects of sympathetic innervation on activity-induced cerebral perfusion changes in humans have not been studied. The aims of this study were therefore (a) to investigate patients with an "intrinsic" sympathetic deficit after stroke and healthy controls with regard to activity-induced cerebral perfusion changes, and (b) to investigate possible differences in functional CBF regulation between …

Sympathetic nervous system function in HIV-associated adipose redistribution syndrome.

It was recently suggested that HIV-associated adipose redistribution syndrome (HARS) results from an autonomic dysbalance. We investigated the local and global sympathetic nervous system function of patients with HIV-1 infection and HARS. Interstitial noradrenaline concentrations in skeletal muscle and subcutaneous adipose tissue were increased in the absence of changes in global sympathetic nerve activity, consistent with locally increased sympathetic activity. This could promote localized lipolysis in subcutaneous adipose tissue and contribute to the development of HARS.

Clinical features of algodystrophy: is the sympathetic nervous system involved?

There is a spectrum of conditions which have in common burning pain, often with hyperpathia, hyperalgesia, vasomotor and sudomotor changes. When due to major nerve damage, the condition is known as causalgia; when due to minor nerve damage or other factors, various terms such as algodystrophy or reflex sympathetic dystrophy are employed. Radiography and isotopic bone scanning may be helpful investigations, and procedures which interrupt the local sympathetic nervous system are those most likely to help the pain. The classical view that the peripheral sympathetic nervous system is involved in g…

The effects of phenylpropanolamine on human sympathetic nervous system function.

Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) is a sympathomimetic agent, very similar in structure to amphetamine. In the United States, it is present in over … after an initial dose. We conclude from these data that recommended doses of PPA have only minimal sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and cardiovascular effects in young, healthy, normotensive populations at the times and dose studied.

Facial flushing and sweating mediated by the sympathetic nervous system.

Sweating and flushing of the forehead and cheeks in response to body heating, embarrassment and strong gustatory stimulation were investigated in 23 patients with a unilateral lesion in the sympathetic pathway to the face. A lesion anywhere along this pathway impaired thermoregulatory sweating and flushing on the denervated side of the forehead in most patients and also of the cheek in some cases. Emotional sweating was also diminished on the denervated side of the forehead irrespective of the site of lesion, but impairment of emotional vasodilatation was noted only with peripheral (second or

The role of the sympathetic nervous system in the thymus in health and disease.

The existence of a network of immunoneuroendocrine interactions that results in the reciprocal modulation of the classical functions of each system is well established at present. Most of the evidence derives from studies on secondary lymphoid organs, such as the spleen and lymph nodes. In this article, several aspects relevant to understand the role of the sympathetic nervous system in the establishment of these interactions in the thymus are discussed. At present, the sympathetic innervation of the thymus, the expression of adrenergic receptors in thymic cells, particularly of β-adrenergic r…

Chronic hyperinsulinaemia and hypertension: the role of the sympathetic nervous system.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the implication of the sympathetic nervous system in the relationship observed between insulin resistance and hypertension. DESIGN: Rats were chronically treated with insulin for 12 days by subcutaneously implanted osmotic pumps and given 10% glucose in their drinking water. A separate group of rats also received glucose only, and control rats received tap water. RESULTS: Physiological hyperinsulinaemia (1.5 and 4.5 mU/kg per min insulin) increased mean arterial pressure by approximately 10 mmHg and heart rate by 60 beats/min, and supraphysiological insulinaemia (9 mU…

The contribution of the sympathetic nervous system to hypertension in diabetes mellitus.

Hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system has repeatedly been assumed to play a role in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension. Particularly in young hypertensive patients, sympathetic nervous activity seems to be slightly elevated. On the other hand an increased pressor effect of noradrenaline has also been reported in some patients with essential hypertension. While neither the slightly elevated sympathetic tone nor the inconstant increased reactivity to noradrenaline could alone be responsible for the blood pressure elevation, both factors together appear to form an important dete…

Role of the sympathetic nervous system in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease.

Psychosomatic elements, behavior, and sympathetic overactivity are presumed to underlie many cardiovascular diseases; the most investigated conditions are borderline hypertension and type A/B behavior. Many patients with borderline hypertension show signs of hyperkinetic circulation, that is, elevated heart rate and cardiac index. This elevation is neurogenic, since it can be abolished with a combination of beta-adrenergic and parasympathetic blockade. Response to such stepwise blockade shows a larger beta-adrenergic and a lower parasympathetic change in cardiac tone, characteristic of the fun

Precapillary vessels: effects of the sympathetic nervous system and of catecholamines.

The study of receptor-operated control mechanisms involved in adrenergic transmission in the blood vessel wall has substantially advanced the understanding of the factors involved in the maintenance of arteriolar tone. As a result of this work, alpha-adrenoreceptors have been divided into two major subtypes termed alpha 1- and alpha 2-adrenoreceptors. Initially, the term alpha 1 was proposed as a synonym for the postjunctional alpha-adrenoreceptor. There is now a large body of evidence for the existence of postjunctional alpha-adrenoreceptors mediating the contraction of vascular smooth muscle

Cocaine inhibits sympathetic neural activity by acting in the central nervous system and at the sympathetic ganglion.

The effects of cocaine on spontaneous pre- and postganglionic sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), mean blood pressure and heart rate were assessed in anesthetized cats. I.v. administration of 2 and 4 mg/kg decreased preganglionic SNA by -24 +/- 7% (n = 4) and -63 +/- 15% (n = 5), respectively. The 4 mg/kg dose produced a decrease in mean blood pressure (-49 +/- 6 mm Hg) with no change in heart rate. Similar sympathoinhibition was obtained in animals with denervated cardiovascular reflexes. Cocaine methiodide (4 mg/kg), a quaternary derivative of cocaine with limited central nervous system access

The role of the sympathetic nervous system in anxiety: Is it possible to relieve anxiety with endoscopic sympathetic block?

The function of the autonomic nervous system is divided so that the parasympathetic system spares central nervous system energy and the sympathetic system makes extra energy available and consumes it. The sympathetic nervous system then prepares our body for emergency and it always functions when our conscious or even unconscious mind notices a need for defence or to provide energy. A surgical procedure, where the upper thoracic sympathetic ganglions are ablated, either with cauterization or clamping with metallic clips, has been used to treat sweating of the hands and facial blushing for deca…

Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation and Its Effects on Sympathetic Nervous System Activation.

Cardiovascular modulation in response to movement and gravitational forces can be influenced by vestibular input or peripheral baroreflex mechanisms. Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) is a widely used, noninvasive method for activating neural pathways within the vestibular system, as well as associated pathways such as vestibulo-spinal, oculomotor, and vestibulo-autonomic circuits. Research on vestibulo-autonomic function via GVS has primarily focused on its effects on cardiovascular modulation and sympathetic muscle and nerve activity. However, inconsistencies in GVS application protocols

Relevance of Sympathetic Nervous System Activation in Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome.

Sympathetic tone is well recognised as being implicit in cardiovascular control. It is less readily acknowledged that activation of the sympathetic nervous system is integral in energy homeostasis and can exert profound metabolic effects. Accumulating data from animal and human studies suggest that central sympathetic overactivity plays a pivotal role in the aetiology and complications of several metabolic conditions that can cluster to form the Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). Given the known augmented risk for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and premature mortality associated with the Met…

Involvement of the sympathetic nervous system in complex regional pain syndrome.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) occasionally develops as a complication of limb trauma. Sympathetic neurotransmitter release is compromised in the affected limb of at least a subgroup of patients throughout the course of the disorder, whereas signs of sympathetic deficit (a warm flushed limb) often evolve into signs of sympathetic overactivity (a cool moist limb) due to the development of adrenergic supersensitivity. Cross-talk between sympathetic neurotransmitters and the sensory neurons that signal pain appears to contribute to CRPS in a subgroup of patients. In addition, sympathetic a
