Ocular manifestations in Kniest syndrome, Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome, Hallermann-Streiff-François syndrome, Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome and median cleft face syndrome.

In the pathology of malformations it is only in very few cases possible to identify a complete syndromal picture; the authors present some multimalformative syndromes, observed in the past few years at the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology of the University of Siena. The ocular findings are reported and discussed in relation with the general features in order to make a correct diagnosis.

Petty syndrome and Fontaine-Farriaux syndrome: Delineation of a single syndrome.

In 1990, Petty et al. described two patients representing a novel syndrome with "congenital progeriod" features and neither had classical progeria nor Wiedemann-Rautenstrauch syndrome, though many findings were overlapping. One of the cases had previously been described by Dr. Wiedemann in 1948. The key features of Petty syndrome include pre and postnatal growth restriction, decreased subcutaneous fat with loose skin, enlarged fontanelle with underdeveloped calvarium, coronal synostosis, unruly hair pattern with non-uniform distribution, prominent eyebrows, umbilical hernia, distal digital hyp…

Immunologic features of chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (DiGeorge syndrome/velocardiofacial syndrome).

OBJECTIVES: To characterize immunologic function and clinical characteristics in patients with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and determine whether there was significant change over time. METHODS: This study characterized the laboratory and clinical features of the immunodeficiency in a cohort of 195 patients with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and used cross-sectional and analysis of variance to compare the findings in different age groups with control patients. Changes over time were also characterized by a model effect method in a subset of patients who were studied serially. …

Marfan syndrome: An eyesight of syndrome.

Marfan syndrome (MFS), a relatively common autosomal dominant hereditary disorder of connective tissue with prominent manifestations in the skeletal, ocular, and cardiovascular systems, is caused by mutations in the glycoprotein gene fibrillin-1 (FBN1). Aortic root dilation and mitral valve prolapse are the main presentations among the cardiovascular malformations of MFS. The revised Ghent diagnostics nosology of Marfan syndrome is established in accordance with a combination of major and minor clinical manifestations in various organ systems and the family history. The pathogenesis of Marfan …

[Autoinflammatory syndromes/fever syndromes].

Hereditary periodic (fever) syndromes, also called autoinflammatory syndromes, are characterized by relapsing fever and additional manifestations such as skin rashes, mucosal manifestations, or joint symptoms. Some of these disorders present with organ involvement and serological signs of inflammation without fever. There is a strong serological inflammatory response with an elevation of serum amyloid A (SAA), resulting in an increased risk of secondary amyloidosis. There are monogenic disorders (familial mediterranean fever (FMF), hyper-IgD-syndrome (HIDS), cryopyrin-associated periodic syndr…

[Syndromes 22. Rieger's syndrome].

Rieger syndrome is a rare autosomal-dominant disorder characterized by defects of the anterior chamber of the eye, failure of the periumbilical skin to involute, and developmental malformations of the dentition. Recognition of the dental anomalies may result in the early diagnosis of this syndrome and prevent progressive visual loss.

Myelodysplastic syndromes with nephrotic syndrome.

It is sometimes reported that the immunological abnormalities in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) induce autoimmune disease (i.e., acute systemic vasculitic syndrome, chronic cutaneous vasculitis, polyneuropathy, relapsing polychondritis, and steroid-responsive pulmonary disorders). We investigated the clinical features of patients with MDS accompanied by nephrotic syndrome. We enrolled 125 patients with MDS who were admitted between January 1979 and May 1996 in this study. The renal function was assessed based on the laboratory data and the findings at the physical examination. The diagnoses o…
