On the basis of control cards of taeniosis collected in the Sanitary Epidemiological Stations the comparison of the infectivity in 1980-1994 was carried out. Standard parameters environment (town, village), sex and age groups as well as morbidity rates/100,000 inhabitants were taken into consideration. A survey was carried out in 3 villages in Bali to determine the prevalence of taeniasis in humans and cysticercosis in pigs. A total of 548 people were examined and Taenia sp. eggs were found in the faeces of 11. Four individuals passed proglottids; two T. solium and two T. saginata and three of these people also passed eggs in the faeces. A total of 12 or 2.2% were infected. Three pigs from a slaughterhouse were found heavily infected with Cysticercus cellulosae. Taeniasis, endemic in Southeast Asia, is caused by Taenia saginata (for beef) or Taenia solium and Taenia asiatica (for pork). T. solium also causes cysticercosis which can affect various organs. Taeniasis and cysticercosis cases are rarely reported in Malaysia. We report here two separate cases of beef taeniasis, and an interesting case of neurocysticercosis in a Malay Muslim. Taenia solium and Taenia saginata are found in humans in Bali, Indonesia. During a field survey of 660 people in Bali from 2002-2009 of taeniasis/cysticercosis cases using mitochondrial DNA confirmation of the species, we detected 80 cases of T. saginata taeniasis, 2 dual T. saginata/T. solium infections with T. solium metacestodes in the brain and 12 neurocysticercosis (NCC) cases at Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar. Survey on secondary data of taeniasis/cysticercosis was carried out in Mongolia in 2002-2006. A total of 118 taeniid proglottids, a diphyllobothriid segment, and 59 serum samples from 118 taeniasis cases were collected at National Center for Communicable Diseases, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
