Melanocytes (MC) sit along the epidermal basal layer, largely quiescent except for constitutive melanin production. They are usually only activated after sun exposure. The recent paper by McGowan et al. (1) describes a novel mechanism by which melanocytes are induced to proliferate upon p53 activation in adjacent keratinocytes (KC). A retrospective study has analyzed 562 sun-related burns out of 19,643 patients treated at our institution from 1 March 1988 to 28 February 1991. These patients were analysed according to sex, age, burn area, mode and length of treatment and outcome. Females, mainly adults, represented 60.8 per cent of all patients presenting burned due to sun bathing. There is a marked seasonal incidence, proportionally constant throughout these 3 years. Burning and tanning histories were studied in 790 white students 18 to 30 years of age by means of a self-administered questionnaire. Only 325 cases (41.1%) were classifiable according to the Fitzpatrick scheme (skin types I to IV). Skin type I (always burn, never tan) was recorded only twice (0.3%). We report a new method for rapid measurement of total acid number (TAN) and TAN boiling point (BP) distribution for petroleum crude and products. Skin cancer rates have been steadily increasing over the last 20 years despite persistent efforts to educate the public on skin cancer prevention and sun safety. Adolescents and young adults are an especially important demographic to reach, as increased UV exposure during these years leads to greatly increased risks of developing skin cancer. Our survey aims to investigate the attitudes and behaviors regarding sun protection and tanning among adolescents and young adults (age range, 13-27 years).
