Covert-attention shifting superseded: Simple visual search explained by a computational cognitive architecture with early vision limitations, eye movements, and task strategies.

This article concerns simple visual-search tasks that require people to respond "yes" or "no" about whether a specified target object is present in stimulus displays containing relatively small numbers of typically simple objects. The currently most popular cognitive theories regarding human performance in these tasks claim that a person's response time depends on the number of shifts of covert visual attention required to choose the response. Such theories provide no significant roles for cognitive task strategies, eye movements, and early-vision limitations (e.g., lower visual resolution and

Improving youth access to behavioral health services through integrated care and task shifting: protocol for a cluster-randomized stepped wedge clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: One promising solution for improving access to mental health services is integrated behavioral health models, in which behavioral health providers address mental health problems within the primary care infrastructure. Additionally, task-shifting, where non-specialists deliver certain services in the place of specialists, may be well-suited to address mental health provider shortages. The current study outlines the protocol for a hybrid type III implementation-effectiveness, cluster-randomized stepped wedge trial to evaluate the implementation of an adapted pediatric integrated beha

In a Model of Neuroinflammation Designed to Mimic Delirium, Quetiapine Reduces Cortisol Secretion and Preserves Reversal Learning in the Attentional Set Shifting Task.

Quetiapine, an atypical antipsychotic medication has lacked pre-clinical validation for its purported benefits in the treatment of delirium. This laboratory investigation examined the effects of quetiapine on the attentional set shifting task (ASST), a measure of cognitive flexibility and executive functioning, in a rodent model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) mediated neuroinflammation. 19 Sprague Dawley female rats were randomly selected to receive intraperitoneal placebo (N = 5), LPS and placebo (N = 7) or LPS and quetiapine (n = 7) and performed the ASST. We measured trials to criterion, error

Single neurons in the human medial temporal lobe flexibly shift representations across spatial and memory tasks.

Investigations into how individual neurons encode behavioral variables of interest have revealed specific representations in single neurons, such as place and object cells, as well as a wide range of cells with conjunctive encodings or mixed selectivity. However, as most experiments examine neural activity within individual tasks, it is currently unclear if and how neural representations change across different task contexts. Within this discussion, the medial temporal lobe is particularly salient, as it is known to be important for multiple behaviors including spatial navigation and memory, h

Successful task shifting: a mixed-methods cross-sectional evaluation of an emergency obstetric care program to increase access to cesarean sections in rural Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Direct obstetric causes of maternal mortality account for approximately 86% of all global maternal deaths. In Nepal, 12% of all deaths of women of reproductive age are due to preventable obstetric complications in significant part due to the limited distribution and skill level of human resources. OBJECTIVES: To address this, the Advanced Skilled Birth Attendant (ASBA) task-shifting initiative was developed to train medical officers to perform Cesarean sections (CSs) and manage obstetric emergencies in Nepal. Until now, there has been limited study of the program's efficacy. METH

Acute tryptophan depletion promotes an anterior-to-posterior fMRI activation shift during task switching in older adults.

Studies have long reported that aging is associated with declines in several functions modulated by the prefrontal cortex, including executive functions like working memory, set shifting, and inhibitory control. The neurochemical basis to this is poorly understood, but may include the serotonergic system. We investigated the modulatory effect of serotonin using acute tryptophan depletion (ATD) during a cognitive switching task involving visual-spatial set shifting modified for a functional MRI environment. Ten healthy women over 55 years were tested on two separate occasions in this within-gro

Shift in the intrinsic excitability of medial prefrontal cortex neurons following training in impulse control and cued-responding tasks.

Impulse control is an executive process that allows animals to inhibit their actions until an appropriate time. Previously, we reported that learning a simple response inhibition task increases AMPA currents at excitatory synapses in the prelimbic region of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Here, we examined whether modifications to intrinsic excitability occurred alongside the synaptic changes. To that end, we trained rats to obtain a food reward in a response inhibition task by withhold responding on a lever until they were signaled to respond. We then measured excitability, using whole-c

Stakeholder perspectives on task shifting to prevent mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B: A qualitative exploration of midwife- and nurse-led interventions in Vanuatu.

In Vanuatu, the management of hepatitis B is limited to hospital settings whilst antenatal care is decentralised to primary care settings, overseen by nurses and midwives. Scale up of interventions during pregnancy to prevent mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of hepatitis B in Vanuatu therefore requires task shifting of care for hepatitis B. This study aims to understand stakeholder perspectives on task shifting hepatitis B PMTCT interventions to midwives or nurses in primary care to increase access to services and decrease risk of mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B in Vanuatu. Twe…
