Effectiveness of radiation protection educational material during angiography using visualization of scattered radiation by augmented reality technique.

In medical settings, radiation exposure among radiation workers is a significant concern, and understanding radiation protection is crucial. We developed and evaluated radiation protection educational materials using an augmented reality application for visualizing scatter radiation. The evaluation included a true/false quiz, a questionnaire based on the ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction) model, and open-ended responses. The correct response rates for the true/false quiz were 65.5% and 72.4% for two questions regarding the effect of C-arm angle changes on scatter radiati

Assessing patient education materials about low back pain for understandability, actionability, quality, readability, accuracy, comprehensiveness, and coverage of information about patients' needs.

BACKGROUND: Patients have unhelpful beliefs about low back pain (LBP), which are associated with worse outcomes. Education may modify these beliefs, but patients with LBP rarely receive education in practice. Patient education materials (PEMs) are a quick, inexpensive intervention to support information provision. OBJECTIVES: assess PEMs for understandability, actionability, quality, readability, accuracy, comprehensiveness, and coverage of information about patients' needs to identify the best PEMs for practice. METHODS: We searched published literature for PEMs tested in randomized trials

Recognition and management of Tourette's syndrome and tic disorders.

Tic disorders and Tourette's syndrome are conditions that primary care physicians are likely to encounter. Up to 20 percent of children have at least a transient tic disorder at some point. Once believed to be rare, Tourette's syndrome is now known to be a more common disorder that represents the most complex and severe manifestation of the spectrum of tic disorders. Tourette's syndrome is a chronic familial disorder with a fluctuating course; the long-term outcome is generally favorable. Although the exact underlying pathology has yet to be determined, evidence indicates a disorder localized

Get real: clinical testing of patients' reading abilities.

Education of cancer patients is complicated by a number of factors including timing, understanding of medical terms, and anxiety-induced inattention. The concern about patient education has led to the common practice of providing brochures about cancer, responses to cancer, treatment, and management of side effects. This material is often written at reading levels that do not match the reading ability of the patient. Research has indicated that the stated educational level is not equivalent to reading level. Realistic testing of a patient's reading ability thus becomes important in choosing th

Diabetic foot ulcers: prevention, diagnosis and classification.

Diabetic ulcers are the most common foot injuries leading to lower extremity amputation. Family physicians have a pivotal role in the prevention or early diagnosis of diabetic foot complications. Management of the diabetic foot requires a thorough knowledge of the major risk factors for amputation, frequent routine evaluation and meticulous preventive maintenance. The most common risk factors for ulcer formation include diabetic neuropathy, structural foot deformity and peripheral arterial occlusive disease. A careful physical examination, buttressed by monofilament testing for neuropathy and

A cognitive strategy instruction to improve math calculation for children with ADHD and LD: a randomized controlled study.

The authors examined the effectiveness of cognitive strategy instruction based on PASS (Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, Successive) given by special education teachers to students with ADHD randomly assigned by classroom. Students in the experimental group were exposed to a brief cognitive strategy instruction for 10 days, which was designed to encourage development and application of effective planning for mathematical computation, whereas the comparison group received-standard math instruction. Standardized tests of cognitive processes and math achievement were given at pretest. All stude

Assessment of forceps use in obstetrics during a simulated childbirth.

BACKGROUND: In obstetrics, manipulations are mainly learned during real deliveries. To minimize the risks linked to such training, we propose a childbirth simulator as a teaching tool in hospitals. More specifically, we focus on training with forceps during obstetric manipulation. METHODS: The training method can be divided into two steps: the teaching of forceps placement, and the extraction manipulation. In this paper we focus on the extraction manipulation on the simulator and the analysis of the results, taking into account several parameters and using an evaluation function to obtain a g

Inventory management of reusable surgical supplies.

We investigate the inventory management practices for reusable surgical instruments that must be sterilized between uses. We study a hospital that outsources their sterilization services and model the inventory process as a discrete-time Markov chain. We present two base-stock inventory models, one that considers stockout-based substitution and one that does not. We derive the optimal base-stock level for the number of reusable instruments to hold in inventory, the expected service level, and investigate the implied cost of a stockout. We apply our theoretical results to a dataset collected fr
