Prevalence and Pattern of Congenital Anomalies Among Deliveries and Pregnancy Terminations at a Tertiary Care Center.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital anomalies are an important cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Data on their prevalence and pattern remain limited because many studies exclude stillbirths and medically terminated pregnancies. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and pattern of congenital anomalies and describe the maternal demographic and obstetric characteristics, mode of anomaly detection, and pregnancy outcomes at a tertiary care center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective observational study was conducted in the Department of

The Right to Grieve: Norwegian Women's Experiences of Care During Termination of Pregnancy in Second Trimester.

This study examines women's experiences of interacting with healthcare professionals after receiving serious prenatal information around gestational week 18 and through subsequent late pregnancy loss, including termination of pregnancy, intrauterine foetal death, or miscarriage. It focuses on medical guidance, emotional support, and post-birth care. A qualitative descriptive design was used. Five Norwegian women participated in individual in-depth interviews, providing insight into encounters with healthcare professionals across the care trajectory. Their experiences unfolded across four key m

Inaccessibility of care and inequitable conceptions of suffering: a collective response to the construction of "terminal" anorexia nervosa.

Informed by our lived experiences with eating disorders, our work providing direct support to communities underserved by existing healthcare structures, and our commitment to social justice, we are deeply troubled by several aspects of the proposed characteristics for "terminal" anorexia nervosa outlined by Gaudiani et al. in Journal of Eating Disorders (10:23, 2022). We have identified two substantial areas of concern in the proposed characteristics provided by Gaudiani et al. and the subsequent publication by Yager et al. (10:123, 2022). First, the original article and the subsequent publica

A qualitative investigation of the palliative care needs of terminally ill people who live alone.

This paper investigates the support needs of people living alone with a terminal illness from a client perspective. In depth, interviews were conducted with 11 clients from Silver Chain Hospice Care in Western Australia to capture their personal experiences of managing at home alone and to assess their physical, social and emotional needs. Findings provided useful insights with respect to many of the motivations, beliefs and wishes of individuals who endeavour to cope on their own with minimal assistance. The needs of these individuals are practical, emotional, physical and existential. At the

Factors influencing Jordanian nursing students' attitudes toward caring for terminally ill patients.

BACKGROUND: Providing care for terminally ill patients is demanding and many nursing students are insufficiently prepared to care for terminally ill patients. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore nursing students' attitudes toward caring for terminally ill patients at universities in Jordan and identify the factors influencing these attitudes. METHODS: A quantitative, descriptive cross-sectional design was used. A multistage random sampling method was employed to recruit 500 nursing students from five governmental universities in Jordan. A structured questionnaire consisting of two parts,

The role of serial point-of-care ultrasound during cardiac arrest to predict termination of resuscitation.

BACKGROUND: The decision to terminate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) remains challenging, particularly for patients with non-shockable rhythms (asystole/pulseless electrical activity). This study evaluated the role of serial point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in predicting the termination of resuscitation by analyzing cardiac standstill duration. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted from June 2024 to March 2025 in two academic hospitals. Adult patients (n = 154) with non-traumatic cardiac arrest (out-of-hospital or in-hospital) and non-shockable rhythms were included. Serial PO

Palliative care needs of terminally ill people living alone: a service provider perspective.

BACKGROUND: Community-based palliative care services face challenges in meeting the needs of terminally ill clients who live alone without a primary caregiver. Yet, there is a dearth of literature on the perceptions of health service providers (HSPs) regarding the care needs and possible management options to assist this growing group to remain at home. OBJECTIVE: This paper investigated the support needs of people living alone with a terminal illness from a service provider perspective. DESIGN: In depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine HSPs from community based services i

The effects of home nursing care for patients during terminal illness on the bereaved's psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: Although some studies have examined the effects of terminal illness care models such as hospice care on survivor outcomes, no studies could be found that examined whether nursing care affected such outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether specialized oncology home care services provided to terminally ill patients with lung cancer positively influenced bereavement psychological distress among survivors, compared with other models of care. METHODS: A secondary analysis was performed to test the effects of home nursing care for terminally ill patients on spousal psychological distr

Dermatomyositis Related Paraneoplastic Encephalitis Presenting as Terminal Delirium in the Palliative Care Unit - A Case Report.

Advanced cancers can have many complications including paraneoplastic processes such as dermatomyositis, hypercalcemia and encephalitis. Due to the wide-ranging nature of symptoms, the diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion and often requires a clinical diagnosis while awaiting for laboratory confirmation. Managing paraneoplastic phenomenon at the end of life requires robust goals of care conversations to determine what the patient is willing to go through to achieve specific goals. We present the case of a 50-year-old male with a history of squamous cell carcinoma presenting as unresolv

Nurses' experiences of supporting children whose parent has a terminal illness in a palliative care setting.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates that approximately 2.2% of children in Ireland are bereaved through the loss of a parent. The death of a parent is one of the most frightening and shocking events a child must endure. As part of their role, specialist palliative care nurses commonly encounter children sitting at the bedside of their parent in inpatient palliative care settings. The study was carried out in Ireland between 2023 and early 2024. AIM: The study aimed to explore nurses' experiences of supporting children whose parent has a terminal illness in a specialist palliative care setting. ME

Maternal Pheromone Emission During Biparental Care: Evidence for Consistent Individual Differences and Links to Terminal Investment.

Pheromone production, once considered a fixed species-specific trait, is now recognized to vary plastically within individuals and consistently among them. Such variation may reflect differences in individual quality as well as adaptive allocation strategies, for example when residual reproductive value declines and individuals exhibit terminal investment in current reproduction. While most work has focused on sex pheromones, much less is known about variation in pheromones that mediate social behavior. In the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides, caring females emit the pheromone methyl ge

Association between nutritional targets and muscle index changes in patients with terminal cancer under palliative care.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Malnutrition and muscle wasting are common in terminal cancer patients and adversely affect prognosis. Bedside muscle ultrasonography (US) has emerged as a practical tool to assess nutritional status and monitor therapy. This study evaluated the relationship between achieving individualized nutritional targets and changes in muscle indices measured by US in terminal cancer patients receiving palliative care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subcutaneous fat tissue thickness (SFTT), muscle thickness (MT), and cross-sectional area (CSA) of the rectus femoris (RF) and biceps brachii (BB) m

Terminal Versus Advanced Cancer: Do the General Population and Health Care Professionals Share a Common Language?

PURPOSE: Many end-of-life care studies are based on the assumption that there is a shared definition of language concerning the stage of cancer. However, studies suggest that patients and their families often misperceive patients' cancer stages and prognoses. Discrimination between advanced cancer and terminal cancer is important because the treatment goals are different. In this study, we evaluated the understanding of the definition of advanced versus terminal cancer of the general population and determined associated socio-demographic factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 2,000 person

[End-of-Life Nursing Experience Providing Care to a Father With Terminal Rectal Cancer With Dependent Children].

This report describes the end-of-life nursing experience of the author in providing care to a 44-year-old father with terminal rectal cancer with two dependent children. Diagnosed in young adulthood with rectal cancer and multiple metastases, the patient initially pursued aggressive treatment. However, rapid disease progression during the terminal stage led to disrupted family processes, role conflict, and significant caregiver role strain. The author's motivation for compiling this report stemmed from the limited research addressing end-of-life care for "parents with advanced cancer and their
