Influence of the 5-HT2C receptor antagonist, SB-242084, in tests of anxiety.

The 5-HT2C antagonist SB-242084 was examined in various anxiety tests at doses based on reversal of mCPP-induced hypoactivity (0.1--3 mg/kg ip). In the elevated plus-maze task, SB-242084 exhibited signs of anxiolysis (time spent, distance travelled, and entries into open arms), but this was potentially confounded by its general increase of locomotion; alprazolam selectively affected open-arm parameters. In a Geller--Seifter conflict test, SB-242084 produced a modest, nonsignificant increase in punished responding compared to the significant effect produced by diazepam. None of the treatments s

Testing the Bivalent Fear of Evaluation Model of Social Anxiety: The Relationship between Fear of Positive Evaluation, Social Anxiety, and Perfectionism.

The Bivalent Fear of Evaluation (BFOE) model of social anxiety proposes that fear of negative evaluation (FNE) and fear of positive evaluation (FPE) play distinct roles in social anxiety. Research is however lacking in terms of how FPE is related to perfectionism and how these constructs interact to predict social anxiety. Participants were 382 individuals from the general community and included an oversampling of individuals with social anxiety. Measures of FPE, FNE, perfectionism, and social anxiety were administered. Results were mostly consistent with the predictions made by the BFOE model

Oncotype DX Breast DCIS Score® Test: Impact on Radiotherapy Recommendations and Patient Decisional Anxiety.

AIMS: Treatment for Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS) includes surgery followed by radiotherapy (RT) to reduce local recurrence (LR) risk, though RT may be overtreatment for some patients. The Oncotype DX Breast DCIS Score® test is a genomic test that provides individualised LR risk estimates. This study evaluates the impact of the Oncotype test on RT recommendations, patient anxiety and decisional conflict. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Women aged ≥45 years with DCIS up to 25mm treated with breast-conserving surgery were invited to participate. Initial RT recommendations and 10-year LR risk prediction

An initial test of a new self-guided internet-based intervention for social anxiety: iExposure.

Social anxiety is a prevalent mental health concern that impacts approximately 12% of the US population. There is a need for targeted mechanism-focused interventions for social anxiety that are also highly scalable. Using a recently developed naturalistic paradigm with simulated teleconferencing interactions as the central treatment element, we developed a new self-guided internet-based intervention for social anxiety called iExposure. This randomized clinical trial aimed at testing two mechanism-driven exposure augmentation strategies for social anxiety. Participants (N = 53) were randomized

Depression and Anxiety: Considerations for Interpretation of the SNOT-22 (22-Item Sinonasal Outcome Test).

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether depression and anxiety symptoms affect and confound scoring on the 22-item Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22), a commonly used outcome measure for chronic rhinosinusitis. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional. SETTING: Tertiary care academic center. METHODS: 240 participants completed the SNOT-22, from which nasal, sleep, ear/facial pain, and emotional subdomain scores were calculated. They also completed the 8-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8) as a reflection of depression symptoms and 7-item Generalized Anxiety Diso

Test-retest reliability and sensitivity to change of the dimensional anxiety scales for DSM-5.

OBJECTIVE: This article reports on the test-retest reliability and sensitivity to change of a set of brief dimensional self-rating questionnaires for social anxiety disorder (SAD-D), specific phobia (SP-D), agoraphobia (AG-D), panic disorder (PD-D), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD-D), as well as a general cross-cutting anxiety scale (Cross-D), which were developed to supplement categorical diagnoses in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5). METHODS: The German versions of the dimensional anxiety scales were administered to 218 students followed u

Test-retest reliability of regional electroencephalogram (EEG) and cardiovascular measures in social anxiety disorder (SAD).

Although the search for psychophysiological manifestations of social anxiety has a rich history, there appear to be no published reports examining the reliability of continuous electrocortical measures that putatively index stress vulnerability and stress reactivity in socially anxious individuals. We examined the 1-week test-retest reliability of regional electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha asymmetry and power, respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), heart period, and heart period variability measures at rest and during anticipation of an impromptu speech in 26 adults diagnosed with social anxiety d

The causal role of negative imagery in social anxiety: a test in confident public speakers.

This study tests the causal role of negative self-imagery in social anxiety. Low public-speaking anxious volunteers rehearsed a negative self-image, a positive self-image or a control image prior to giving a speech. As predicted, the negative image group felt more anxious, believed they performed less well and reported more negative thoughts than the positive image group. These findings do not appear to be due to changes in state anxiety, since they remained unchanged when anxiety was controlled in an analysis of covariance. The negative image group also reported more anxiety than the control

Anxiety process "theta" biomarker in the stop signal task eliminated by a preceding relaxation test.

Anxiety disorders are currently the most prevalent psychiatric diseases in Europe and the United States, the 6th highest cause of years of life lived with disability, and so a grave and ever-increasing burden on health care resources. Categorization of specific anxiety disorders is constantly evolving, but even the new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5) manual uses symptom lists, not objective biomarkers. The DSM-5 and International Classification of Diseases (10th ed.) also aim for single diagnoses, but patients present with mixed symptoms that fit multiple

Histaminergic H1 receptors mediate L-histidine-induced anxiety in elevated plus-maze test in mice.

The central histaminergic system is reported to mediate behavioural, hormonal and physiological homeostasis of living organisms. Recent reports indicate its prominent role in various neurobehavioural disorders such as depression and psychosis. This study evaluated the effect of activation of the central histaminergic system in anxiety-like conditions, using the elevated plus-maze test in mice, and elucidated the role of different histaminergic receptors mediating such effects. Peripheral administration of L-histidine (L-His), in a dose-dependent manner, significantly decreased the exploration

Empirically tested interventions for death anxiety among older americans: a systematic review.

Death anxiety around the world may vary due to the beliefs, traditions, and customs of different cultures. Common interventions for death anxiety focus on meaning-making and spirituality, both of which vary by culture. While death anxiety interventions studies are well-established outside of the United States, the effect of those interventions for culture groups within the United States is unknown. This systematic review synthesizes United States-based intervention studies over the last 20 years and analyzes their methodology, results, and cultural transferability. Using the PRISMA methodology

Dyadic Adjustment of Couples and State Anxiety in Patients Tested for Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Background: While existing literature addresses the psychological impact of HIV, there is a notable gap in data regarding other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating the association between STIs, the psychological profile of patients as measured by anxiety levels, and the impact on couple adaptability. Methods: A prospective investigation was conducted in Romania, from November 2021, including individuals with high suspicion of STI and healthy controls. Data collection comprised a questionnaire, the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), and State-Trait

Testing anxiety in undergraduate medical students and its correlation with different learning approaches.

OBJECTIVES: Undergraduate medical students experience a considerable amount of stress and anxiety due to frequent exams. The goal of the present study was to examine the development of exam related anxiety and to test for a correlation between anxiety and learning approaches. METHODS: A whole class of 212 medical students was invited to participate in the study. During their first term, trait anxiety and learning approaches were assessed by use of the state-trait-anxiety inventory (STAI-T) and the approaches-and-study-skills-inventory-for-students (ASSIST), respectively. Acute state anxiety w

Social anxiety and suicidal ideation: Test of the utility of the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide.

Social anxiety is related to greater suicidality, even after controlling for depression and other psychopathology. The Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide (IPTS; Joiner, 2005) proposes that people are vulnerable to wanting to die by suicide if they experience both perceived burdensomeness (sense that one is a burden to others) and thwarted belongingness (a greater sense of alienation from others). Socially anxious persons may be especially vulnerable to these interpersonal factors. The current study tested whether interpersonal IPTS components independently and additively mediate the

Testing the effects of social anxiety disorder on friendship quality across gender and ethnicity.

Previous research suggests that social anxiety disorder (SAD) has a specific relationship with impairment in friendship quality; however, potential moderators of this relationship have not been tested. The current study examines whether the specific effect of SAD on friendship quality is stable or varies across gender and ethnicity in a large epidemiological dataset. Results indicate that the underlying construct of friendship quality differed slightly but significantly between men and women; as a result, effects of SAD were tested in men and women separately. After partially constraining frie

Behavioral avoidance tests and disgust in contamination fears: distinctions from trait anxiety.

Much of the existing literature examining the role of disgust is limited to specific phobia. Recent research has begun to examine the role of disgust in contamination fear, a subtype of obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Through the use of behavioral avoidance tasks (BATs), the current study was designed to examine the role of disgust in people with contamination fears, with attention to distinguishing high and low trait anxiety. From a large screening of undergraduate students, three groups were formed based on their level of contamination fear and level of trait anxiety: contamination fearful (

Effects of high and low anxiety provoking instructions on the responses to the hyperventilation provocation test.

This study examined the effect of high and low anxiety provoking instructions in subjects submitted to a Hyperventilation Provocation Test (HVPT). Subjects were 43 out-patients referred to our clinic for a diagnostic examination of Hyperventilation Syndrome (HVS). Results showed that anxiety levels were affected by the instruction manipulation, but the magnitude of this effect was less than expected and the instruction manipulation had no effect on intensity arid type of reproduced symptoms, nor on symptom recognition. Subjects who met Diagnostic and Statistical manual of Mental Disorders (3rd

Relationships between test anxiety and metacognition in Chinese young adults with and without specific learning disabilities.

The influence of test anxiety on academic difficulties has been investigated in typically developing students, but the mechanism underlying the influence remains unclear, especially for those with specific learning disabilities (SpLDs). This study examined the role of metacognition in the relationship between test anxiety and literacy difficulties among Chinese typically developing adolescents as well as those who have been identified as having an SpLD and significant literacy difficulties (i.e., typically functioning SpLD) and without significant literacy difficulties (i.e., high-functioning …
