Except for cases due to maternal hypertension, severe and early intrauterine growth retardations are most usually due to fetal abnormalities. We report a case of confined placental homogenous tetraploidy associated with major fetal growth retardation leading to the premature delivery of a life born baby with a normal caryotype. We discuss the interest of chorionic villus sampling in cases of unexplained severe fetal growth retardation.

In this article, we report the histopathologic findings in a placenta from an early second trimester abortion. The placental villi showed prominent scalloping with many intravillous trophoblastic pseudoinclusions and mild trophoblastic hyperplasia, mimicking the morphology of partial hydatidiform mole. The placental karyotype was 46,XY,del(18)(q21). These histopathologic changes have been previously described in numerical chromosomal aberrations like triploidy, tetraploidy, and trisomies, but not in structural chromosomal abnormalities.

A European survey was carried out in order to evaluate the incidence of chromosome anomalies in spontaneous abortions after IVF. Of the 34 abortuses analysed, 21 had a chromosome anomaly (62%), namely three with monosomy X,14 autosomal trisomies, one double trisomy, one triploidy, one tetraploidy and one translocation. These data show that IVF does not increase the incidence of chromosomal abortuses when compared with natural conceptions (60%).

We present a seven-year-old boy with cryptogenic cirrhosis, membranous glomerulonephritis, mild mental retardation and mildly dysmorphic changes. Chromosomal analysis showed diploid, triploid and tetraploid mosaicism which was detected both by cytogenetic study and flow cytometric analysis of nuclear DNA content. Complete tetraploidy and triploidy, usually lethal, are rare chromosomal disorders. This is the first reported case of diploid-triploid-tetraploid mosaicism with cryptogenic cirrhosis and membranous glomerulonephritis.

Although molecular studies have shown that more than 90% of partial moles are secondary to diandric triploidy, there are some rare cases with tetraploidy or unspecified aneuploidies. We diagnosed 3 cases of partial mole presentation during the 2nd trimester of pregnancy with multiple fetal abnormalities. In all 3 cases, cytogenetic studies showed trisomy 13. We present the cases and discuss the clinical and pathological aspects of the conditions presented as partial moles.
