Formaldehyde (HCHO) exposures during a full year were calculated for different race/ethnicity groups living in Southeast Texas using a chemical transport model tagged to track nine emission categories. Petroleum and industrial emissions were the largest anthropogenic sources of HCHO exposure in Southeast Texas, accounting for 44% of the total HCHO population exposure. Murine Typhus is a zoonosis caused by the organism Rickettsia typhi and is transmitted to humans by fleas. It is endemic in several areas of Texas, California and Hawaii where the vector is supported predominantly by rodents in addition to opossums, domestic and feral cats and domestic dogs. We present a typical case in an adult from Corpus Christi, located in one of the four endemic areas in Texas. Included is an overview of the organism's pathogenicity and our host responses, both influencing the milder clinical course seen with this species of Rickettsia.

Although the multi-component weight loss supplement Redotex is banned in the United States, the supplement can be obtained in Mexico. The intent of this report was to describe the pattern of Redotex calls received by a statewide poison center system. Cases were all Redotex calls received by Texas poison centers during 2000-2008. Idiopathic talipes equinovarus (ITEV) is the most common form of clubfoot with a birth prevalence of 1 per 1,000 births. Serial casting and surgical correction impose a substantial financial burden on families and the health care system. While the etiology of ITEV is considered to be complex, the causes remain elusive. BACKGROUND: Xylazine is a sedative, analgesic, anesthetic, and central muscle relaxant approved for animals but not humans. Although xylazine is an emerging drug of abuse, there are limited data on potentially adverse exposures to the drug.

Malaria transmitted by blood transfusion is rare in the United States, with an estimated incidence of <0.3 cases per million transfused blood units. The last reported case of transfusion-transmitted malaria occurred in April 2002 (1); before that a total of 12 cases were identified during 1990--1998(2) [corrected]. A study was conducted in Texas state psychiatric facilities of 299 patients with schizophrenia who were taking clozapine, comparing them with 223 matched controls taking traditional neuroleptics. From 12 months before until 54 months after clozapine was begun, hospital bed days and the associated costs were determined for both groups.
