Theileria infectivity of Hyalomma ticks in Haryana, India.

Theileria infection of Hyalomma ticks collected from three districts of Haryana was assessed in whole salivary glands by the methyl-green pyronin staining method. Of 1,662 ticks screened, 546 (32.8%) were found Theileria positive. Infection rate in 935 female ticks (36.9%) was more than that of 727 male ticks (27.6%). Density of Theileria infection (number of infected acini per infected tick) was also higher in female ticks. Theileria infection rate of ticks varied greatly in the three districts viz. only 12.0% in Rohtak, 25.8% in Hisar and 48.3% in Karnal. Per cent infection rate was high (63

Transmission of a Theileria species to cattle by the ixodid tick, Amblyomma cohaerens Donitz 1909.

Amblyomma cohaerens nymphs, which had been collected as engorged larvae from African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) in the Mara region of Kenya, transmitted a theilerial parasite to a steer. Macroschizonts were detected in the regional lymph node of this steer 12 days after tick application and were subsequently detected for 3 days at low levels of parasitosis. The macroschizonts were large and had numerous nuclei, being morphologically unlike any other theilerial schizonts described previously from cattle in Eastern and Southern Africa, but they resembled the macroschizont of T. barnetti Brocklesb

Studies on Theileriidae (Sporozoa) in Tanzania IX. Unidentified bovine Theileriae.

Two strains of nonpathogenic Theileriae, designated as Theileria sp. (Idobogo) and Theileria sp. (Mwanza), were isolated from cattle in southern and northern Tanzania respectively. They were similar to each other, producing low numbers of T. parva-like macroschizonts and of small piroplasms. Both were readily transmitted by Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. No serological relationship with T. mutans was found, while serum of some of the recovered animals gave fleeting, low titres in the indirect fluorescent antibody test to T. parva schizont antigen. Recovered animals were fully susceptible to T.

Molecular diagnosis of Theileria and Babesia species infecting cattle in Northern Spain using reverse line blot macroarrays.

BACKGROUND: Piroplasmosis in cattle is caused by tick-borne haemoprotozoan parasites of the genera Theileria and Babesia. Molecular detection techniques offer higher sensitivity and specificity than microscopy examination methods and serological tests. A reverse line blot (RLB) macroarray that included generic and species-specific probes for Theileria annulata, Theileria buffeli, Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, Babesia divergens and Babesia major was used to study the presence and identity of the piroplasm species infecting 263 bovine blood samples from 79 farms, most of them in Northern Spai

Review of Australian species of Theileria, with special reference to Theileria buffeli of cattle.

This review describes 4 species of parasites in Australia generally regarded as Theileria. The physiological and epidemiological characteristics of the species that occurs in cattle are discussed. Confusion still surrounds the relationship of this species with benign species of Theileria in other countries. Arguments are presented to support the proposal that the bovine species in Australia is correctly designated Theileria buffeli and that this name should apply to all the benign species of Theileria of cattle in Eurasia. The other 3 species considered in the review are proposed species from

Effects of tick infestation on Boran (Bos indicus) cattle immunised against theileriosis in an endemic area of Kenya.

Boran (Bos indicus) heifers were immunised by infection with local Theileria parva parva, T p lawrencei and T mutans stocks and treated with parvaquone and later exposed to natural tick and tick-borne disease challenge in the Trans-Mara Division of Kenya. The Theileria species parasites in the challenge were maintained in African buffalo and cattle and the tick vectors were supported by several species of wild Bovidae and domestic livestock present in the area. Thirty immune cattle were observed for 30 weeks while grazing on a ranch in the Trans-Mara Division. Of these, 15 were immersed in tox

Efficacy of imidocarb diproprionate and primaquine phosphate in the prevention of tick-borne disease in imported Hereford heifers in South Korea.

This paper describes the build-up of tick-borne blood parasites in a group of Hereford heifers imported from New Zealand to the island of Jeju Do, South Korea. All became infected with Theileria sergenti and half with Babesia bigemina. An attempt was made to contain the 2 parasites by treatment with either primaquine phosphate or imidocarb diproprionate. Both drugs had some prophylactic activity against T. sergenti for at least 26 days and imidocarb dipropionate eliminated B. bigemina. Since T. sergenti infections built up subsequently in the animals it is suggested that repeated prophylaxis c

Investigations on a Theileria species from an impala.

An immature impala (Aepyceros melampus), captured in the Machakos district of Kenya, had Theileria-like parasites in its erythrocytes. Blood from this animal was inoculated into a Theileria-free impala born in captivity and a Theileria-free, splenectomized steer. Theilerial piroplasms were detected in the erythrocytes of the recipient impala 10 days after inoculation, and a peak parasitaemia of 2% was reached after 48 days, but no infection was detected in the steer. Anaemia developed in the recipient impala in association with the theilerial infection. The morphology of the theilerial piropla

Comparison of the in vitro infectivity of different strains of Theileria parva in the Muguga cocktail vaccine.

Theileria parva, a protozoan parasite, is the causative agent of East Coast fever (ECF), an economically important disease of cattle in sub-Saharan Africa. The Muguga cocktail vaccine which comprises 3 T. parva strains, namely Muguga, Kiambu 5 and Serengeti transformed, is used for immunization of cattle to control ECF. However, the relative contributions of these T. parva strains to vaccine efficacy are not fully understood. This study compared the in vitro infectivity of the strains at varying concentrations of 2.75, 84.5, and 169 infected acini/ml using peripheral blood mononuclear cells is

Andrographolide as a selective anti-Theileria annulata drug molecule with low host cell cytotoxicity.

Bovine tropical theileriosis, caused by Theileria annulata, is a significant economic burden in endemic regions. The limitations of current control measures necessitate the development of new therapeutic agents. This study evaluated the anti-Theileria potential and host cell safety of rutin, andrographolide, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), and fusidic acid. Antiparasitic efficacy was assessed using a resazurin-based growth inhibition assay on T. annulata-infected bovine lymphocytes. Cytotoxicity and haemolytic activity were evaluated using healthy bovine peripheral blood mononuclear c
