This investigation proved that thermography is a reliable method of examination. When the difference of temperature in the legs reached 1 degree C or more, there was a correlation between clinical sciatica and the thermographic registration in 51 of 52 patients. 319 cases of breast pathology of doubtful clinical diagnosis were studied by means of thermography and mammography, with histological verification: 214 proved to be malignant tumours and 105 benign. The role of thermography is discussed on the basis of these results; it would appear to be restricted to diagnostic aid status associated with other procedures, particularly clinical examination and mammography.

The authors report their experiences with thermography as a new tool to assess the diagnosis and postoperative control of patients with carotid-cavernous fistulas (CCF). A zone of increased temperature on the homolateral orbital region is described in cases of CCF. A supraorbital "cool" area, as seen in patients with carotid stenosis or occlusion, is observed when surgery with the Jaeger-Hamby technique has been successful. Thermograms obtained in five patients are presented and the pathophysiology of these findings is discussed.

INTRODUCTION: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a condition caused by chronic compression of the median nerve. The diagnosis is made mainly on the basis of clinical image and confirmed with electrodiagnostic testing (electromyography and nerve conduction study); however, these methods do not always aid in reaching the diagnosis of CTS. The objective of this study was to adapt infrared thermography (IRT) to measure heat loss in human beings. IRT images were digitized and a mean body surface temperature was computed; heat losses caused by radiation, convection, and evaporation were calculated by using these data. The basic premises of thermographic analysis for low back problems are that variations in skin temperature signify certain and specific underlying disease processes. The newer technologic advances for monitoring skin temperature raise the questions of whether thermography is an adequate substitute for invasive diagnostic tools such as electromyography and myelography or computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. This article discusses the basic concepts, procedures, clinical experiences, postoperative studies and chronic low back syndromes, and thermograms.

Thermographic examination of the scrotum was performed in 55 healthy males, 64 patients with nonspecific inflammatory lesions of the testicles and 44 cases of testicular tumor.
