Luminescent Tetrahedral Manganese(II) Pentaphluorophenolate Complex as a Highly Sensitive Molecular Thermometer.

A mononuclear tetrahedral manganese complex containing all O-donor ligands has been prepared under mild conditions starting from a dialkylcarbamato manganese(II) precursor. Manganese(II) N,N-dibutylcarbamate [Mn(O2CNBu2)2]n, 1, can be conveniently prepared by extraction from a deoxygenated water solution of manganese(II) sulfate using a CO2-saturated toluene solution of dibutylamine. Access to the N,N-dibenzylcarbamato manganese complex [Mn(O2CNBz2)2]n, 2, occurs through metathesis by reaction with dibenzylamine and carbon dioxide. By reaction of 2 with pentafluorophenol, an almost quantitativ

Intensity and lifetime ratiometric luminescent thermometer based on a Tb(III) coordination polymer.

A three-dimensional terbium(III) coordination polymer of formula [Tb(bttb)0.5(2,5-pzdc)0.5]n (1) [H4bttb = 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4'-carboxyphenyl)benzene and H2-2,5-pzdc = 2,5-pyrazinedicarboxylic acid] was obtained under hydrothermal conditions. The bttb4- tetraanion in 1 adopts the bridging and chelating-bridging pseudo-oxo coordination modes while the 2,5-pzdc2- dianion exhibits a rather unusual bis-bidentate bridging pseudo-oxo coordination mode, both ligands being responsible for the stiffness of the resulting 3D structure. Solid-state photoluminescent measurements illustrate that 1 exhibits r

Genetically Encoded Protein Thermometer Enables Precise Electrothermal Control of Transgene Expression.

Body temperature is maintained at around 37 °C in humans, but may rise to 40 °C or more during high-grade fever, which occurs in most adults who are seriously ill. However, endogenous temperature sensors, such as ion channels and heat-shock promoters, are fully activated only at noxious temperatures above this range, making them unsuitable for medical applications. Here, a genetically encoded protein thermometer (human enhanced gene activation thermometer; HEAT) is designed that can trigger transgene expression in the range of 37-40 °C by linking a mutant coiled-coil temperature-responsive pro

Clinical evaluation of a cutaneous zero-heat-flux thermometer during cardiac surgery.

We evaluated the disposable non-invasive SpotOn™ thermometer relying on the zero-heat-flux technology. We tested the hypothesis that this technology may accurately estimate the core temperature. The primary objective was to compare cutaneous temperature measurements from this device with blood temperatures measured with the pulmonary artery catheter. Secondary objective was to compare measurements from the zero-heat-flux thermometer indirectly with other routinely used thermometers (nasopharyngeal, bladder, rectal). We included 40 patients electively scheduled for either off-pump coronary arte

Comparison between rectal and body surface temperature in dogs by the calibrated infrared thermometer.

Because dogs tolerate conventional rectal temperature measurements poorly, a calibrated infrared thermometer was tested for assessing canine body surface temperature. Body surface temperature of 204 dogs was estimated on various sites (digit, snout, axilla, eye, gum, inguinal region, and anal verge). Having rectal temperature as the gold standard, temperature difference, Spearman's correlation coefficient, hyperthermia and hypothermia detection sensitivity and specificity, and stress response score was calculated for each measurement site. Although the canine body surface temperature was consi

Successful Laparoscopic Removal of a Self-Inflicted Thermometer that Spontaneously Migrated into the Peritoneal Cavity.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is one of the most important central nervous system disorder and 1% of the total world population suffers from this disorder which require a chronic drug treatment. Most of the researchers suggested that excessive calcium entry into neurons is the main triggering event in the initiation of epileptic discharges but the role of L type calcium channels has not been clarified in absence epilepsy. AIM: In this study, it is aimed to investigate the antiepileptic effects of nifedipine, an L type calcium channel blocker and BAY K8644, an L type calcium channel opener in a genetic

Short Communication: Use of Infrared Thermometers for Cutaneous Temperature Recording: Agreement with the Rectal Temperature in Felis catus.

In veterinary medicine, the gold standard for assessing body temperature is rectal temperature assessment. Considering that this procedure is stressful for many species, in particular for cats, it could be clinically important to consider an alternative approach for the monitoring of core body temperature. The aim of this study was to test if cutaneous temperature measurements by means of different infrared thermometers are in agreement with the most commonly used method for body temperature measurement in cats. The cutaneous temperature was recorded in the jugular, shoulder, rib, flank, and i

Validation of commercially available infrared thermometers for measuring skin surface temperature associated with deep and surrounding wound infection.

OBJECTIVE: Increased local skin temperature is a classic sign of wound infection, repetitive trauma, and deep inflammation. Noncontact infrared thermometers can help to detect increases in skin surface temperatures; however, most scientifically tested devices are far too expensive for everyday wound care providers to use in routine clinical practice. This noninferiority study was conducted in an attempt to determine whether 4 less expensive, commercially available noncontact infrared thermometers have a similar level of accuracy as the scientifically accepted Exergen DermaTemp 1001 (Exergen Pr

Green-Emissive Ferroelectric Optical Thermometer Based on Cyclometalated Dicyanidoplatinate(II) Ions.

Multifunctional ferroelectrics combine switchable permanent polarization with other physical functionalities. Among them, luminescent ferroelectrics are coming into the spotlight due to their potential in sensing, data storage, and optoelectronics. This multifunctionality can be improved if their emission is sensitive to external stimuli, such as temperature (T), which is utilized in optical thermometry. Aiming at ferroelectric luminescent thermometers, we decided to explore photoluminescent cyanido metal complexes. We report a hybrid salt of strongly emissive dicyanido(2-phenylpyridinato)plat

Optomagnetic Heater-Thermometer Nanoplatform for Tumor Magnetothermal Therapy with Operando Temperature Feedback.

Real-time temperature feedback during hyperthermia enables precise lesion ablation with minimal damage to healthy tissue. However, the lack of on-demand theranostic agents eludes such applications. This study demonstrates in vivo operando temperature monitoring in tumor magnetothermal therapy using an optomagnetic heater-thermometer nanocluster agent. This agent was synthesized via a precise microemulsion-based assembly of lanthanide luminescent nanocrystals and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. We show that the lanthanide luminescent nanocrystals within the agents provide temperatur

Highly-sensitive optical thermometer developed based on an intervalence charge transfer mashup.

Optical thermometers based on lanthanide thermal-coupled levels have attracted great attention owing to its fundamental importance in the fields of public health, biology, and integrated circuit. However, the inherent structural properties (shielded effect on 4f configurations, intense non-radiation relaxation) strictly suppress the sensing performance, limiting the relative temperature sensitivity (SR). To circumvent these limitations, we propose an intervalence charge transfer mashup strategy by inducing d0 electron configured transition metals. Specifically, transition metals Ta5+ is incorp

Metallic Mercury Injection in the Hand Caused by A Broken Mercury Thermometer: A Case Report.

Incorrect usage of or accidents related to metallic mercury can be hazardous. Herein, we present a case of subcutaneous metallic mercury injection in the hand caused by a broken thermometer and surgical tips for this injury. A 43-year-old female patient visited our hospital due to mercurial injection injury at the left hand suffered 4 weeks previously. On gross findings, the mercury deposition was limited to the subcutaneous layer and enveloped by granulation tissue. The blood mercury level, which had been abnormally elevated, fortunately decreased to within normal levels within five months. N

RNA thermometer controls temperature-dependent virulence factor expression in Vibrio cholerae.

Vibrio cholerae is the bacterium that causes the diarrheal disease cholera. The bacteria experience a temperature shift as V. cholerae transition from contaminated water at lower temperatures into the 37 °C human intestine. Within the intestine, V. cholerae express cholera toxin (CT) and toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP), two main virulence factors required for disease. CT and TCP expression is controlled by the transcriptional activator protein ToxT. We identified an RNA thermometer motif in the 5' UTR of toxT, with a fourU anti-Shine-Dalgarno (SD) element that base pairs with the SD sequence to

Nursery outbreak of peritonitis with pneumoperitoneum probably caused by thermometer-induced rectal perforation.

Between June 16 and October 9, 1974, 9 neonates at a small, community hospital were stricken with an unusual, serious illness manifested by peritonitis and pneumoperitoneum; 3 died. Although the illness was initially thought to be necrotizing entercolitis, clinical, laboratory, and epidemiologic evidence strongly suggested that it was instead the result of gastrointestinal perforation. in case-control studies employing 3 different conposure to a particular nurses' aide. Other studies including a comparison of expected and actual exposures of ill infants to nursery personnel further linked this

Evaluation of the Distress Thermometer in Pelvic Exenteration: Responsiveness-To-Change, Convergent Validity, and Clinical Cutoff.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic exenteration (PE) is a radical surgery for advanced pelvic malignancies that carries substantial psychosocial impacts. Assessing distress is critical for timely support. AIMS: To evaluate the responsiveness-to-change and convergent validity of the distress thermometer (DT), and to determine an optimal cutoff score for detecting clinically significant distress in a PE cohort. METHODS: Secondary analyses of cohort study data involving adult patients who underwent PE at a quaternary referral hospital. Responsiveness was evaluated by determining whether the DT differentiated c

The alternative vagal maneuver; converting atrioventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia by a rectal thermometer.

Vagal maneuvers are techniques used to increase parasympathetic tone, particularly useful in the management of hemodynamically stable supraventricular tachycardias. If ineffective, adenosine can be attempted. We present a patient with atrioventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia (AVNRT), who could not effectively perform Valsalva maneuvers and had contraindications for carotid massage and adenosine administration, that converted into sinus rhythm by using a rectal thermometer. This maneuver was reproduced on various occasions. We suggest that rectal vagal maneuver may provide an additional th

Low Ambient Temperature Exposition Impairs the Accuracy of a Non-invasive Heat-Flux Thermometer.

BACKGROUND: Indirect core body temperature (CBT) monitoring from skin sensors is gaining attention for in-field applications thanks to non-invasivity, portability, and easy probe positioning. Among skin sensors, heat-flux devices, such as the so-called Double Sensor (DS), have demonstrated reliability under various experimental and clinical conditions. Still, their accuracy at low ambient temperatures is unknown. In this randomized cross-over trial, we tested the effects of cold temperature exposition on DS performance in tracking CBT. METHODS: Twenty-one participants were exposed to a warm (

Benzhydrylpyridinium Ions: A New Class of Thermometer Ions for the Characterization of Electrospray-Ionization Mass Spectrometers.

Previous attempts to characterize the internal energies of ions produced by electrospray ionization (ESI) have chiefly relied upon benzylpyridinium ions, R-BnPy+, as thermometer ions. However, these systems are not well suited for this purpose because of their relatively high dissociation energies. Here, we propose benzhydrylpyridinium ions, R,R'-BhPy+, as a new class of thermometer ions. DLPNO-CCSD(T)/CBS//PBE0-D3BJ calculations for R,R'-BhPy+ (R,R' = H,H'; Me,Me'; H,OMe'; Me,OMe'; OMe,OMe'; NPh2,NPh2') predict that these ions fragment by the loss of pyridine via loose transition states.
