Tissue adhesion after surgical interventions (Review).

Tissue adhesion after surgical procedures is a common postoperative complication that affects a significant number of patients across all surgical disciplines. In pelvic surgical procedures, second-look surgeries have revealed adhesions in more than half of all patients weeks to several months after surgery. Adhesions can be asymptomatic, but they can also cause a wide range of complications, such as severe pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, ileus and reproductive dysfunction. Undetected adhesions that lead to problems in subsequent surgical interventions are also of high clinical importanc

Switchable Adhesion of Hydrogels to Plant and Animal Tissues.

The ability to "switch on" adhesion between a thin hydrogel and a biological tissue can be useful in biomedical applications such as surgery. One way to accomplish this is with an electric field, a phenomenon termed electroadhesion (EA). Here, it is shown that cationic gels can be adhered by EA to tissues across all of biology. This includes tissues from animals, including humans and other mammals; birds; fish; reptiles (e.g., lizards); amphibians (e.g., frogs), and invertebrates (e.g., shrimp, worms). Gels can also be adhered to soft tissues from plants, including fruit (e.g., plums) and vege

Use of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive under a diaper.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the utility of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive (Dermabond, Ethicon, Somerville, NJ, USA; an effective means of epithelial skin closure) under a diaper (i.e. constantly exposed to bodily fluids) in 25 children (not toilet-trained) undergoing inguinal surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of charts between July 1998 and July 2000 was used to identify children who were not toilet-trained and who had undergone inguinal surgery (e.g. orchidopexy, hernia and hydrocele repair). In addition to the type of surgery, the method of closure was also assessed; in all cas

In vitro adhesion of Staphylococcus strains to rabbit tissues.

Differences in the in vitro adhesion of Staphylococcus strains on rabbit tissues were evaluated by viable unit counts and radio-labeling. Among coagulase-positive strains, two freshly isolated strains and the Cowan I strain adhered much more than the Wood 46 strain especially to peritoneum. In addition, the Smith strain, which is coagulase-positive and encapsulated, showed on rabbit peritoneum a degree of adhesion smaller than that of the Cowan I strain and similar to that of the Wood 46 strain. These quantitative results were corroborated by examination of the bacteria on thin sections of per

Injectable, self-healing hydrogel adhesives with firm tissue adhesion and on-demand biodegradation for sutureless wound closure.

Tissue adhesives have garnered extensive interest as alternatives and supplements to sutures, whereas major challenges still remain, including weak tissue adhesion, inadequate biocompatibility, and uncontrolled biodegradation. Here, injectable and biocompatible hydrogel adhesives are developed via catalyst-free o-phthalaldehyde/amine (hydrazide) cross-linking reaction. The hydrogels demonstrate rapid and firm adhesion to various tissues, and an o-phthalaldehyde-mediated tissue adhesion mechanism is established. The hydrogel adhesives show controlled degradation profiles of 6 to 22 weeks in viv…

Impact of tissue adhesives on the prevention of anastomotic leakage of colonic anastomoses: an in vivo study.

BACKGROUND: Tissue adhesives (TA) may be useful to strengthen colorectal anastomoses, thereby preventing anastomotic leakage (AL). Previous studies have identified cyanoacrylate (CA) TAs as the most promising colonic anastomotic sealants. This study investigates the protective effects of sealing colonic anastomoses with various CAs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-five Wistar rats underwent laparotomy and transection of the proximal colon. An anastomosis was created with 4 interrupted sutures followed by either application of Histoacryl Flexible, Omnex, Glubran 2, or no TA seal. An additional co…

A smart adhesive Janus hydrogel for non-invasive cardiac repair and tissue adhesion prevention.

Multifunctional hydrogel with asymmetric and reversible adhesion characteristics is essential to handle the obstructions towards bioapplications of trauma removal and postoperative tissue synechia. Herein, we developed a responsively reversible and asymmetrically adhesive Janus hydrogel that enables on-demand stimuli-triggered detachment for efficient myocardial infarction (MI) repair, and synchronously prevents tissue synechia and inflammatory intrusion after surgery. In contrast with most irreversibly and hard-to-removable adhesives, this Janus hydrogel exhibited a reversible adhesion capabi

Effects of phenolic hydroxyl group structures of Alaska pollock gelatin-based adhesives on soft tissue adhesion and biocompatibility.

Marine mussels adhere to various types of substrates in aqueous/wet environments, and their adhesion is controlled by the catechol structure of the phenolic hydroxyl groups. Tissue adhesives with a catechol structure have been designed based on this biomimetic adhesion mechanism. However, the effects of the chemical structure of the phenolic hydroxyl groups on tissue adhesion and biocompatibility have not yet been systematically investigated. In this study, various phenolic hydroxyl group-modified Alaska pollock gelatins (nHy-ApGltns (n = 0, 1, 2, 3)) were synthesized and their function as tis…

Wisdom across interfaces: Adhesion mechanism and application potential of wet-adhesive hydrogel in periodontal tissue.

Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease of periodontal tissues closely linked to systemic health, presents significant therapeutic challenges due to the dynamic and moist microenvironment of these tissues. Current local therapeutic systems lack adaptability to this unique microenvironment, making it difficult to guarantee treatment efficacy at the target site. Wet-adhesive hydrogels, with their exceptional tissue adhesion and multifunctionality, demonstrate tremendous potential as emerging materials for periodontitis treatment. In this review, we systematically summarize recent advances

Robust Janus Hydrogel with Wet-Tissue Adhesive Properties for Wound Dressing and Anti-Postoperative Adhesion.

Although adhesive hydrogels have advanced rapidly in recent years, conventional double-sided adhesives still face challenges in achieving effective adhesion to wet tissues and preventing postoperative tissue adhesion. In this study, a novel Janus hydrogel wet adhesive was successfully designed by precisely regulating the distribution of free hydroxyl and phenolic hydroxyl groups on the two surfaces of the hydrogel. The resulting Janus hydrogel exhibits significantly different adhesive and nonadhesive properties on its upper and lower surfaces. Specifically, through a simple boric acid (BA) sol

Janus-Structured Microgel Barrier with Tissue Adhesive and Hemostatic Characteristics for Efficient Prevention of Postoperative Adhesion.

Postoperative adhesion (POA) is a common and serious complication following various types of surgery. Current physical barriers either have a short residence time at the surgical site with a low tissue attachment capacity or are prone to undesired adhesion formation owing to the double-sided adhesive property, which limits the POA prevention efficacy of the barriers. In this study, Janus-structured microgels (Janus-MGs) with asymmetric tissue adhesion capabilities are fabricated using a novel bio-friendly gas-shearing microfluidic platform. The anti-adhesive side of Janus-MGs, which consists o

Injectable Hydrogel Adhesive with Rapid In Situ Gelation and Robust Tissue Adhesion for Emergency Hemorrhage Control.

Uncontrolled bleeding after severe trauma poses a major challenge to existing tissue adhesives primarily due to their inadequate wet adhesion, sluggish bonding kinetics, insufficient mechanical strength, and potential cytotoxicity. Here, we report the development of an injectable and biocompatible hydrogel adhesive based on a unique catalyst-free cross-linked network of poly(disulfide)s. The incorporation of melanin nanoparticles (CINP) within the hydrogel matrix enhances its cross-linking density, thereby strengthening its tissue binding capabilities and imparting exceptional mechanical prope…
