BACKGROUND: Biomarkers to identify lung cancer (LC) patients with high risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) are needed.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the usefulness of plasma tissue factor activity (TFA) and D-dimer levels for the prediction of VTE and overall survival in patients with LC.
METHODS: In a prospective multicenter observational cohort of consecutive LC patients, TFA and D-dimer levels were measured at diagnosis before any cancer treatment (V1) and between 8 and 12 weeks after diagnosis (V2).

INTRODUCTION: Different elbow flap reconstructions have been described in the literature. We aim to define the optimal flap technique based on defect size and etiology.
METHODS: A systematic review was undertaken using the terms "(Elbow reconstruction) AND ((Soft tissue) OR (flap))". Flaps were grouped under fasciocutaneous (FCF), muscular (MF), distant pedicled (DPF), and free flaps (FF). The primary outcome was flap survival. BACKGROUND: Survival estimates for soft tissue sarcomas (STS) and malignant bone tumors (BT) diagnosed in pediatric, adolescent, and young adult patients are not easily available. Three cases of cardiac valvular disease complicating chronic inflammatory disorders of connective tissue are described. Each underwent surgical valve replacement. The outcome in the first case, a patient with aortitis complicating Reiter's syndrome and in good health otherwise, has been excellent. The other two patients, one with rheumatoid arthritis and vasculitis, the other with systemic lupus erythematosus and nephritis, died after operation as the result of their systemic disease. The importance of systemic features in assessing this type of patient is emphasized.

The signals mediating human plasma cell survival in vivo, particularly within secondary lymphoid tissue, are unclear. Human tonsils grafted into immunodeficient mice were therefore used to delineate the mechanisms promoting the survival of plasma cells.
