[Optical coherence tomography in multiple sclerosis].

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows the different layers of the retina to be visualised in vivo. One of them is the so-called retinal nervous fibre layer (RNFL), which is made up of amyelinic axons from the ganglionic cells, and therefore part of the central nervous system. Recent studies have begun to examine possible applications of OCT in the field of neurology and, more specifically, the usefulness of measuring the thickness of the RNFL in multiple sclerosis (MS). In both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies it has been shown that a decrea

[Optical coherence tomography in neuro-ophthalmology].

INTRODUCTION: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a potential tool for diagnosis and follow-up in diseases of the anterior visual pathway in that it provides a reproducible and reliable quantification of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness. A review of the literature was conducted to define the utility of OCT in neuro-ophthalmology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical applications of RNFL thickness measurement by OCT time domain were analyzed. The PubMed search engine enabled us to select the relevant publications, using the following keywords: "optic neuropathy", "retinal nerve fibe

Astigmatism and optical coherence tomography measurements.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effect of astigmatism change on measurement of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and macular thickness by Cirrus HD spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (Cirrus HD OCT; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA, USA). METHODS: A total of 30 right eyes from 30 healthy young subjects underwent RNFL and macular thickness measurements using Cirrus HD OCT. Measurements were performed at the baseline state and induced with-the-rule (WTR) and against-the-rule (ATR) astigmatism states by wearing toric soft contact lenses (+1.50 -3.25 diopter × 90° and +1.50 -3.25 diopter × 180

Optical coherence tomography in neuromyelitis optica.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an inflammatory disease with combined features of optic neuritis and myelitis. This pathologic entity may induce severe disability, including visual loss and paraplegia. Other than clinical follow-up, there is no marker for severity of the disease. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in NMO and to determine whether this new technique could be a good marker of axonal loss in NMO. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-five patients with NMO or at a high risk for NMO (having optic neuritis or myelitis and

Optical coherence tomography in choroidal tuberculosis.

PURPOSE: To report the optical coherence tomographic (OCT) features in eyes with tuberculous choroidal granuloma. DESIGN: Interventional case series. METHODS: Nine eyes of nine patients with tuberculous granuloma of the choroid were studied using OCT scans. RESULTS: OCT scan through the lesions revealed a distinctive feature of attachment between the retinal pigment epithelial- choriocapillaris layer and the neurosensory retina over the granuloma ("contact" sign). This was associated with surrounding subretinal fluid and inflammatory infiltrate in the deeper retinal layers. CONCLUSIONS: OC

[Optical coherence tomography in Malattia Leventinese].

BACKGROUND: Malattia Leventinese (ML) is a genetically homogeneous macular dystrophy with an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. Ophthalmoscopically it is recognisable by a radial pattern of drusen-like deposits in the macula and by parapapillary deposits, named Forni's verrucosities. The aim of this study is to describe optical coherence tomographic (OCT) findings and to compare them with histological data. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six patients underwent ophthalmological examination, angiography and OCT. Diagnosis was confirmed by genetic analysis of the R345W mutation. A histopathological

Imaging the optic nerve with optical coherence tomography.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technology, which may be used to generate in vivo quantitative and qualitative measures of retinal structure. In terms of quantitative metrics, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness provides an indirect evaluation of axonal integrity within the optic nerve. Ganglion layer measures derived from macular scans indirectly reflect retinal ganglion cell status. Notably, ganglion layer indices are platform dependent and may include macular ganglion cell inner plexiform layer (mGCIPL), ganglion cell layer (GCL), and gangl

The role of Optical Coherence Tomography in optic neuropathies.

UNLABELLED: Optical neuropathies are neuro-ophthalmologic disorders, the main symptoms of which are the decrease of visual acuity and the alteration of the color vision. Optical coherence tomography has been one of the most important innovations in ophthalmology, which offered the possibility to analyze specific structures of the retina. Optical coherence tomography performs in vivo, real-time, noncontact scanning and provides cross-sectional and volumetric images with a resolution approaching that of histology. Optical coherence tomography offers the opportunity to study neurological diseases
