Site of autonomic dysfunction in a patient with Ross' syndrome and postganglionic Horner's syndrome.

Ross' syndrome is a rare peripheral nervous system disorder defined by Adie's tonic pupil, hyporeflexia, and segmental anhidrosis. Injury to postganglionic cholinergic fibers is believed to account for the tonic pupil and sweating disturbance. We report a 47-year-old man found to have Ross' syndrome in combination with a complete postganglionic Horner's syndrome. Pharmacologic and sudomotor tests in this unique patient provide further evidence that Ross' syndrome results from injury to sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglion cells or to their postganglionic projections.

Physiology, assessment, and disorders of the pupil.

Proper examination of the pupil provides an objective measure of the integrity of the pregeniculate afferent visual pathway and allows assessment of sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation to the eye. Infrared videography and pupillography are increasingly used to study the dynamic behavior of the pupil in common disorders, such as Horner's syndrome and tonic pupil.

Pupil abnormality in amyloidosis with autonomic neuropathy.

Darkness pupil diameters, light reflexes, and redilatation times have been recorded with infrared TV pupillometry in 12 consecutive patients … ic ganglion and in the attached sympathetic chain obtained at necropsy. Four patients had bilateral tonic pupils with light-near dissociation and two had abnormally small pupils with reduced light reactions which could not be characterised. It seems that in patients with systemic amyloidosis generalised autonomic neuropathy is strongly associated with pupil a …

Corneal sensation in Adie's syndrome.

Using the Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer, we evaluated the corneal sensation of 11 patients with unilateral Adie's tonic pupil. We eliminated six other patients with bilateral Adie's pupil or disease that lowered corneal sensation. An observed unfamiliar with each patient's condition tested 12 clock hour positions in the midperiphery in both eyes of all patients. We studied 30 normal subjects (60 eyes) in a similar fashion. Of those 11 patients with unilateral Adie's syndrome, ten had a regional decrease in corneal sensation. The 30 normal subjects examined did not exhibit any significant decreas…

Pupillary abnormalities in congenital neurosyphilis.

Pupils in congenital neurosyphilis differ from the classic Argyll-Robertson pupil in acquired cases, and often tend to be large and unreactive. Constriction to pilocarpine in the reported patient would suggest that peripheral parasympathetic damage is responsible for such pupillary findings. Congenital neurosyphilis should be included among the causes of "tonic" pupil.

No evidence for a modulating effect of continuous transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation on markers of noradrenergic activity.

Although transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is thought to increase central noradrenergic activity, findings supporting … s of phasic and tonic noradrenergic activity, respectively. Prior to and at the end of stimulation, tonic pupil size at rest, cortisol, and salivary alpha-amylase were assessed as markers of tonic noradrenergic activity. Finally, we explored the effect of taVNS on cardiac vagal activity, respiratory rate, and salivary flow rate. Results showed a greater ERPD …

Miotic Adie's pupils.

Two young adults, aged 24 and 31, had a long history of small, poorly reactive pupils. There was no history of large pupils, and a review of old photographs confirmed 10 and 5 years, respectively, of miosis. Both were found to have bilateral tonic pupils that were supersensitive to diluted pilocarpine. Although it is possible that they had an unusually early onset of bilateral Adie's syndrome with dilated pupils that was not noticed, it is suggested that some patients might have primary miotic Adie's pupils without ever passing through a mydriatic phase.

Blue enriched light modulates pupil dilation induced by transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation.

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) targets the auricular branch of the vagus nerve and can modulate brainstem arousal systems, including the locus coeruleus-noradrenaline (LC-NE) pathway. Blue-enriched light also affects LC activity and can enhance alertness and cognition. However, no study has tested whether combining tVNS with blue light could further boost noradrenergic activity in humans. We therefore measured pupil responses, a well-established marker of LC-NE function, to assess how light and tVNS interact. We conducted a randomized, within-subject block design with twenty-fiv

Elevated and accelerated: Locus coeruleus activity and visual search abilities in autistic children.

BACKGROUND: Autistic individuals excel at visual search, however, the neural mechanism(s) underlying this advantage remain unclear. The locus coeruleus-norepinephrine (LC-NE) system, which plays a critical role in sensory perception and selective attention, has been shown to function in a persistently elevated state in individuals on the spectrum. However, the relationship between elevated tonic LC-NE activity and accelerated search in autism has not been explored. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between visual search abilities and resting pupil diameter (an indirect measure of tonic L

[Clinical presentations of Ross syndrome have changed in their lateralities following the anteriotemporal lobectomy for refractory focal epilepsy].

We describe a 60-year-old woman with medically refractory left mesial temporal lobe epilepsy accompanied by Ross syndrome. The patient had a partial triad of Ross syndrome with hypohydrosis only on her right side (contralateral to the epileptic seizure focus), Adie's tonic pupil on the right, and areflexia while her seizures used to be medically refractory. However, her hypohidrosis and Adie's tonic pupil have completely changed in terms of laterality following nearly complete seizure freedom resutling from left temporal lobectomy. This unique change in laterality in Ross syndrome is most like…

Ross Syndrome Presenting as Heat Exhaustion: A Report of Two Cases.

Ross syndrome is a rare clinical disorder of sweating associated with tonic pupil and areflexia. There are very few case reports of Ross syndrome in dermatology literature, most presenting with patchy hyperhidrosis. Here, we report two isolated cases who had presented to the emergency department with heat exhaustion. Multidisciplinary evaluations of the first case revealed focal anhidrosis, patchy hyperhidrosis, postural hypotension, absent deep tendon reflex, and tonic pupil while the second case had similar features except for postural hypotension, prompting the diagnosis of Ross syndrome. P…

Are there facial indicators of positive emotions in birds? A first exploration in Japanese quail.

The positive aspect of emotions, like pleasure, remains overlooked in birds. Our aim was to contribute to the exploration of facial indicators of positive emotions. To observe contrasting emotional expressions, we used two lines of Japanese quail divergently selected on their inherent fearfulness: a fearful line (long tonic immobility duration: LTI) and a less fearful line (short tonic immobility duration: STI). To induce positive emotions, we gave individual quail the opportunity to perform a rewarding behaviour, dustbathing, in an unfamiliar cage. More STI than LTI quail expressed dustbathin

Pupil Size Dynamics Predict Momentary Changes in Self-Reported Arousal.

Subjective arousal, or feelings of activation and alertness, can dynamically modulate affect, behavior, and cognition. Momentary changes in subjective arousal have typically been assessed with self-report in humans, which may alter those very feelings. Although researchers have traditionally used pupil size as a physiological index of arousal, links between pupil dynamics and momentary changes in subjective arousal remain unclear. Here, we combined continuous pupillometry with repeated self-report probes of changing arousal as individuals engaged in a modified Monetary Incentive Delay task. Ac
