Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) is a relatively common malignancy of the oral cavity, representing 7% to 11% of all intraoral minor salivary gland tumors, and 19% to 26% of those that are malignant. However, it is a rare finding in the oropharynx, with only 6 cases reported in the medical literature. The clinical features of a case of PLGA of the tonsillar fossa in a 64-year-old gentleman are presented, only the second such case reported in the medical literature. A review and discussion of the literature pertaining to PLGA of the oral cavity and the oropharynx is provided. (Am J

Malignant melanoma (MM) has a high potential of lymphatic and hematogeneous spread, and metastatic disease is always incurable with a high mortality. We present a rare phenomenon of MM metastasizing to the palatine tonsil.

Medulloblastoma is the most common type of aggressive pediatric primary brain malignancy. This case describes a 45-year-old Hispanic male with no significant past medical history who presented to the emergency department (ED) complaining of 15 days of 10/10 intractable headaches with one day of lightheadedness, confusion, and loss of balance. An urgent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed a 4.1 x 3.3 x 3.2 cm mass at the cerebellum, exerting a mass effect on the brainstem and mild tonsillar herniation. A pre-surgical physical exam revealed only a positive Babinski sign bilate

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a plasma cell neoplasm of soft tissue without bone marrow involvement or other systemic characteristics of multiple myeloma. Approximately 80%-90% of EMPs involve the head and neck region, especially in the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, tonsillar fossa, and oral cavity. An EMP of the larynx is extremely rare and is a locally destructive lesion without systemic spread. Clinical features vary depending on the tumor location. A diagnosis is established by histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and a systemic survey to exclude systemic plasma cell proliferati

Adamantinoma-like Ewing sarcoma (ALES) of the parotid gland is an exceptionally rare neoplasm. We report the case of a 57-year-old male with a history of p16-positive tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma who presented 2 years after remission with excessive mucus production and neck stiffness. Imaging identified a left parotid mass, and diagnosis was confirmed through surgical pathology, with molecular testing revealing a Fused in Sarcoma-Fifth Ewing Variant (FUS-FEV) fusion gene. Treatment included radical parotidectomy, adjuvant external beam radiation, and systemic chemotherapy following the Ew

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) in the oral cavity is a rare variant of blistering pemphigus disease closely associated with mostly malignant tumors. The diagnosis may even precede an underlying malignancy enabling early detection. Here, we describe a previously unreported case of PNP associated with HPV-related tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 50-year-old woman was referred to a dentist because of painful oral lesions resembling aphthae major and minor. Later, blisters appeared and an incisional biopsy was performed. Histological examination revealed an un

We have studied the expression of gelatinase A, gelatinase B, interstitial collagenase, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 and TIMP-2 in reactive lymphoid cells, as well as in a series of cell lines derived from neoplasms of B- and T-cell lineage. Using both Northern blot analysis and zymography, gelatinase B activity was detected by zymography in two Burkitt cell lines and in a tonsillar cell suspension, while gelatinase A and interstitial collagenase activities were not detected by either method. TIMP-1 expression was demonstrated by Northern blot analysis in the multipotential n

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign salivary gland neoplasm and may arise from the minor salivary glands of the palate. Palatal masses can resemble inflammatory, infectious, or other neoplastic lesions, and fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) may be nondiagnostic. A 35-year-old woman presented with a painless, gradually enlarging swelling of the left soft palate of three months' duration. Examination revealed a smooth, firm, non-tender, non-ulcerated submucosal mass measuring approximately 3 × 2 cm and extending toward the left tonsillar fossa. Contrast-enhanced computed tomograph

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, though less frequently performed now than in the 1930s, remain among the most common surgical procedures in the United States. The need for and benefits of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy have been a source of controversy for several decades. Nonetheless, there are situations in which these procedures definitely are beneficial. Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are two distinct procedures with separate indications, and they are performed concurrently only when the specific indications for each coexist. Tonsillectomy is indicated by recurrent tonsillitis, peritons

Primary oral cavity sarcomas are exceedingly rare and may pose a great diagnostic challenge. A 71-year-old woman without history of malignancy or radiation to the head and neck presented with an antibiotic-refractory diffuse painful swelling of the right tonsil necessitating tonsillectomy. Histologic evaluation revealed subtotal replacement of the right tonsil by a high-grade epithelioid neoplasm displaying extensive ulceration, necrosis, and primitive vasoformation. Immunohistochemistry showed strong/diffuse expression of pancytokeratin antibodies KL-1 and Lu5, cytokeratin 8, cytokeratin 18,

Meningiomas can occur at excranial and extraspinal sites such as the nose, nasopharynx and paranasal sinuses. Meningioma of the tonsil has seldom been described. We report a case of ectopic meningioma of the left palatine tonsil, in a 50-year-old male with no clinical or radiological evidence of an intracranial lesion. Follow-up at six months revealed no evidence of recurrence.

BACKGROUND/AIM: While in many Western countries the number of tonsillectomies decreases significantly, there is an increasing incidence of oropharyngeal carcinomas. For, obviously, removal of the tonsils will reduce individual risk for tonsil cancer, the question of tonsillectomy as a prevention strategy is suggested. This study focused on this question by carrying out a literature research.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature research was performed (www.pubmed.gov; Search words: tonsillectomy, oropharyngeal cancer, tonsil cancer, prevention) without applying additional filters.
RESULTS: Out

We experienced an extremely rare case of large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of the lung metastasizing to the tonsil. A 66-year-old woman who had been undergone radical hysterectomy and radiated on whole pelvis in June, 2006, was pointed out 2 cm diameter abnormal shadow at the right S8 of the lung by computed tomography (CT) in May, 2007. In June, 2007, the right lower lobectomy with lymphandenectomy was done by video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). The pathological diagnosis was stage IA LCNEC of the lung. In April, 2008, multiple metastases to the brain appeared, and the patient u
