BACKGROUND: Avulsion of permanent front teeth is a rare accident, mostly affecting children between seven and nine years of age. Replanted and splinted, these teeth often develop inflammation, severe resorption or ankylosis affecting alveolar bone development and have to be extracted sooner or later.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate different therapy concepts to create a structured concept for the treatment of avulsions.
RESULTS: Based on existing therapy concepts, a concept for different initial conditions (dry time, age, growth, tooth, hard and soft tissues) was develo

The traumatic avulsion of a tooth presents unique and challenging difficulties in patient management. The successful replantation of the avulsed tooth is influenced by many factors occurring from the moment of injury to the moment of replantation. Immediate and decisive treatment is essential in this time period to avoid subsequent inflammatory root resorption and ankylosis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate dental ankylosis in unerupted or partially erupted teeth by using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to quantify pixel intensity.
STUDY DESIGN: In total, 157 CBCT images from individuals with a total of 206 unerupted or partially erupted teeth with suspected ankylosis were evaluated. CBCT images were analyzed for the presence of ankylosis by 2 oral radiologists by quantifying mean pixel intensities (analysis 1) and variations in pixel intensities (analysis 2) in normal and ankylosed regions. The association between ankylosis and demographi

Chameleon teeth develop as individual structures at a distance from the developing jaw bone during the pre-hatching period and also partially during the post-hatching period. However, in the adult, all teeth are fused together and tightly attached to the jaw bone by mineralized attachment tissue to form one functional unit. Tooth to bone as well as tooth to tooth attachments are so firm that if injury to the oral cavity occurs, several neighbouring teeth and pieces of jaw can be broken off. We analysed age-related changes in chameleon acrodont dentition, where ankylosis represents a physiologi

Atlantic Cutlassfish, Trichiurus lepturus, have large, barbed, premaxillary and dentary fangs, and sharp dagger-shaped teeth in their oral jaws. Functional teeth firmly ankylose to the dentigerous bones. We used dry skeletons, histology, SEM, and micro-CT scanning to study 92 specimens of T. lepturus from the western North Atlantic to describe its dentition and tooth replacement. We identified three modes of intraosseous tooth replacement in T. lepturus depending on the location of the tooth in the jaw. Mode 1 relates to replacement of premaxillary fangs, in which new tooth germs enter the lin

Impaction of a primary tooth is a rare occurrence compared to impaction of a permanent tooth. Impaction should be differentiated from reimpaction, a condition in which an erupted tooth loses its apical movement and impaired development of the alveolar bone surrounding the tooth occurs. In dental ankylosis, the height of the alveolar process stops in the affected area, the adjoining teeth continue to move occlusally, and neighboring teeth drift. The author discusses the uncertain etiology of reimpaction. The history of a three-year-old patient is presented.

Secondary retention refers to the cessation of eruption of a tooth after emergence. This may be the result of pathological changes in the periodontal ligament. The aim of this study was to describe the morphological and histological aspects of the radicular surface of secondarily retained permanent molars. The roots of 12 secondarily retained molars and two control molars, were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM) in order to analyse the occurrence and localisation of ankylosis. With SEM it was observed that the root surface of retained molars showe

Dentoalveolar ankylosis is a serious complication following injuries of the periodontal membrane in severe dental trauma such as avulsion and intrusion. The condition is a fusion of the alveolar bone with the tooth. The consequences of this condition are progressive resorption of the root with replacement by bone (replacement resorption) and arrested growth of the alveolar process in the growing patient. This article will present an overview of dentoalveolar ankylosis and replacement resorption and its problems, treatment options and prognosis, especially focusing on the growing patient.

Tooth avulsion is defined as the complete displacement of the tooth out of its alveolar socket. The treatment of choice is immediate replantation or if that is not possible, placement of the tooth in an appropriate storage media. This report presents replantation of an avulsed maxillary central incisor after 12 hours of storage in milk. The tooth was replanted and splinted. One week later, it was treated endodontically and calcium hydroxide dressing was placed for 1 month; subsequently, the tooth was obturated with gutta-percha. During three years of follow-up, no evidence of ankylosis or infl

Avulsed teeth that are stored extraorally in a dry environment for >60 min generally develop replacement root resorption or ankylosis following their replantation due to the absence of a vital periodontal ligament on their root surface. One negative sequelae of such ankylosis is tooth infra-positioning and the local arrest of alveolar bone growth. Removal of an ankylosed tooth may be difficult and traumatic leading to esthetic bony ridge deformities and optimal prosthetic treatment interferences. Recently a treatment option for ankylosed teeth named 'de-coronation' gained interest, particularl

Mandibular distraction osteogenesis is an increasingly accepted treatment option for severe upper airway obstruction in grade 3 Robin sequence. Complications are rarely reported but can include fracture, pin dislodgement, tooth bud damage, and temporomandibular joint ankylosis. Operative correction of these complications can carry inherent risks of their own. We present a patient who incurred carotid artery dissection and stroke after release of postdistraction coronoid-zygomatic ankylosis for the treatment of mandibular micrognathia.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Autotransplantation is a well-documented procedure for replacing missing teeth in the anterior maxilla. This retrospective study aims to evaluate long-term survival rate, success rate as well as esthetics and patient-reported outcome of premolars autotransplanted to the anterior maxilla and secondarily to identify potential prognostic factors for survival, success, esthetic, and biological complications.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred and twenty-two patients with 153 transplants were assessed on survival rate and potential prognostic factors, while 50 patients with 61 autot

Fourteen impacted teeth in thirteen patients aged 9 to 17 years were either repositioned or transplanted, followed by postoperative orthodontic treatment. Successful results were achieved in twelve of the teeth. In one tooth, ankylosis of the root prevented a successful outcome, and deficient bone healing of the alveolar process led to an unsuccessful result in a second tooth.

Obtaining a functional tooth is the ultimate goal of tooth engineering. However, the implantation of bioengineered teeth in the jawbone of adult animals never allows for spontaneous eruption due mainly to ankylosis within the bone crypt. The objective of this study was to develop an innovative approach allowing eruption of implanted bioengineered teeth through the isolation of the germ from the bone crypt using a polycaprolactone membrane (PCL). The germs of the first lower molars were harvested on the 14th day of embryonic development, cultured in vitro, and then implanted in the recipient si

Ankylosis and external replacement resorption (ERR) are two typical biological responses to delayed replantation of avulsed teeth in cases where adequate root canal treatment is performed. The patient's growth stage affects the progression of root resorption and the long-term outcome of the affected teeth. This case report describes the long-term outcome of an 18.5-year-old patient following an accident in which both of his maxillary central incisors were avulsed and replanted after four hours of non-physiological storage. ERR and ankylosis of teeth 11 and 21 were detected clinically and radio

A case report describing an ankylosed permanent maxillary canine which was brought into the arch by a combination of surgery and orthodontics is used as a basis to review the literature concerning many aspects of the management of ankylosed permanent teeth. The literature indicates surgical luxation is a two edged sword, that is, it may cause ankylosis if used with surgical exposures but it can also be the only means of treating ankylosis. The treatment of the canine which is the subject of this case report resulted in damage to the tooth. Vanarsdall's recent contributions in this field are de

Delayed replantation of an avulsed tooth with an open apex resulted in failure of revascularization, necrosis of the pulp and extensive external root resorption. Removal of the necrotic pulp and repeated intra-canal dressings of calcium hydroxide over a three year period arrested the inflammatory resorptive process. The process was replaced by replacement resorption leading to ankylosis and infra-occlusion of the affected tooth. As the tooth was asymptomatic, it was retained in the arch to act as a space maintainer. To improve aesthetics, the crown was recontoured using a light-cured resin.

INTRODUCTION: In clinical practice, submerged roots are found with high frequency, and their presence can change the planning of dental movements and implant placement.
OBJECTIVES: To provide explanations of possible developments in the area involved, according to the evolutionary stage of the process, at the time of diagnosis.
DISCUSSION: After atrophy of the periodontal ligament and epithelial remnants of Malassez, ankylosis of the bone with the submerged root occurs, and initiates a process of replacement resorption. Until this process reaches the most advanced stage, this area represents
