The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) symptoms and tooth wear in patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) compared with matched controls. GORD symptoms were assessed for 33 SS patients and 20 age- and sex-matched controls. Tooth wear was assessed in all patients and controls. The results were further analysed in two subgroups of SS patients and controls with and without GORD symptoms (SS patients without GORD symptoms: n = 11, controls without GORD symptoms: n = 18). A higher proportion of SS patients reported suffering from heartburn and r…

Dentifrices containing different active agents may be helpful to allow rehardening and to increase the resistance of the eroded surface to further acids or mechanical impacts. This study aimed to compare the effects of conventional (sodium fluoride [NaF]) and stannous fluoride (SnF2)-containing dentifrices on reducing erosive tooth wear (ETW). The PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, LILACS, BBO, EMBASE, TRIP electronic databases, and grey literature were searched until January 2021 to retrieve relevant in vitro and in situ studies related to research question. There were no restrictions on publication yea…

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the susceptibility of partially desalivated rats to erosive tooth wear (ETW); the anti-erosive effect of a calcium-supplemented beverage; and the quantification of ETW by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT).
METHODS: The study population consisted of thirty-eight rats, divided into partially desalivated (n = 19) and normal salivary flow (n = 19). They were randomly allocated into three subgroups (n = 6-7): A-diet soda, B-diet soda + calcium, C-water (control). Solutions were provided ad libitum for 28 days, and the rats were euthanized afterwards. Each left hemi-man…

Teeth have been a focus of research in both extinct and extant taxa alike; a significant portion of dental literature is concerned with dental patterning and replacement. Most non-mammalian vertebrates continuously replace their dentition but an anomalous group of squamates has forgone this process in only having one tooth generation; these squamates all have apically implanted teeth, a condition known as acrodonty. Acrodont dentition and various characteristics attributed to it, including a lack of replacement, have often been defined ambiguously. This study explores this type of implantation

Erosive tooth wear is a multifactorial condition of an increasing prevalence. There is a need for discovering individual genetic predisposition for the development of this condition. Considering that the chromosome X locus was previously shown to be associated with dental caries, the aim of the present study was to look for the association between this locus and erosive tooth wear when dietary habits are considered as a co-factor. Saliva samples, erosive wear experience data, and dietary information from 16- to 18-year-old dental patients (n = 705) were used. Genotyping analyses were performed…

BACKGROUND: In many mammalian species, once the permanent teeth have erupted, the only change to dentition is a gradual loss of tooth surface/height through wear. The crown of the teeth cannot be repaired once worn. When dental crown tissue has been depleted due to wear, the animal is expected to have a suboptimal body condition. We evaluated the role of tooth wear in causing a reduction of physical condition in adult roe deer females (Capreolus capreolus).
RESULTS: The progressive wearing of the lower cheek teeth was assessed in a Northern Apennines (Italy) population with a new scoring sche…

OBJECTIVES: Epidemiological studies indicate that erosive tooth wear (ETW) is a common threat of tooth surface loss. The etiology of ETW is multifactorial. The prevalence of asthma is increasing in developed countries, especially in children. Studies evaluating ETW in asthmatic children are conflicting. With our study, we aimed to investigate the association between general and asthmatic factors and the presence of ETW.
METHODS: Population of this cross-sectional observational study consisted of children aged 6-17 years under treatment for asthma at University Medical Centre. ETW was determin…

Tooth wear is multi-factorial presenting as a combination of abrasion, attrition, and erosion. This case report represents a case of combined tooth wear in a 46-year-old Indo-Trinidadian male, with a predominant erosive component with both the clinical signs and features of intrinsic and extrinsic erosion. This patient case is unique since the wear predominated by dental erosion has occurred rapidly evidenced by the physical clinical appearance of a lack of compensation and the upper left premolars and molars relatively unaffected by the overall effects of tooth wear. This lack of compensation…

BACKGROUND: Dental erosion and erosive tooth wear (ETW) are increasingly significant non-carious defects in industrialized countries. Reasons for an increased prevalence are mainly modern dietary habits, but an improved diagnostic awareness also contributes to an apparent increase in cases. Unlike caries, erosion involves acid-induced demineralization without bacterial involvement. When this is combined with mechanical wear, it results in ETW. Diagnosis commonly employs the Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE), a standardized clinical index assessing lesion severity across sextants.

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear encompasses the loss of dental hard tissues through processes including attrition, abrasion and erosion. Previous studies have identified potential associations with age, sex, salivary characteristics, socioeconomic factors and bruxism; however, findings remain inconsistent and often based on single-factor analyses. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with tooth wear, with emphasis on subject‑based bruxism, and to evaluate the relative contribution of bruxism in relation to demographic, socioeconomic, clinical, and functional factors using a multivariate a…

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear is an important mechanism for reducing dental dimensions and, consequently, dental crowding. The objective of this cohort study was to examine the relation of tooth wear, adjusted for covariates (age, tooth loss, arch perimeter and intercanine width), on tertiary crowding in Amazon Indigenous populations.
METHODS: A sample of 40 Indigenous people in permanent dentition at T0 (baseline) and after 13 years (T1) were evaluated. The sample included 16 males and 24 females belonging to two villages, Arara (n = 22, mean ages 16.6 and 29.9 years) and Assurini do Xingu (n = 18,…

The Dahl concept has been widely recognized and applied in the management of localized anterior tooth wear for several decades, although its clinical implementation remains a topic of ongoing discussion. This case report describes a practical application of the Dahl concept in a patient presenting with severe wear of the lower anterior teeth, accompanied by reversible pulpitis. The report outlines a minimally invasive restorative strategy, guided by the principles of the Dahl concept, using composite resin to achieve occlusal elevation. This approach avoids extensive tooth reduction or the nee…
