Long-term personal exposure to traffic-related air pollution among school children, a validation study.

Several recent studies suggest an association between long-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution and health. Most studies use indicators of exposure such as outdoor air pollution or traffic density on the street of residence. Little information is available about the validity of these measurements as an estimate of long-term personal exposure to traffic-related air pollution. In this pilot study, we assessed outdoor and personal exposure to traffic-related air pollution in children living in homes on streets with different degree of traffic intensity. The personal exposure of 14 child

Urban policy interventions to reduce traffic-related emissions and air pollution: A systematic evidence map.

BACKGROUND: Urban areas are hot spots for human exposure to air pollution, which originates in large part from traffic. As the urban population continues to grow, a greater number of people risk exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) and its adverse, costly health effects. In many cities, there is a need and scope for air quality improvements through targeted policy interventions, which continue to grow including rapidly changing technologies. OBJECTIVE: This systematic evidence map (SEM) examines and characterizes peer-reviewed evidence on urban-level policy interventions aimed at

Childhood cancer and traffic-related air pollution in Switzerland: A nationwide census-based cohort study.

Motor vehicle exhaust is a major contributor to air pollution, and exposure to benzene or other carcinogenic components may increase cancer risks. We aimed to investigate the association between traffic-related air pollution and risk of childhood cancer in a nationwide cohort study in Switzerland. We identified incident cases from the Swiss Childhood Cancer Registry diagnosed < 16 years of age between 1990 and 2015 and linked them probabilistically with the census-based Swiss National Cohort study. We developed land use regression models to estimate annual mean ambient levels of nitrogen dioxi

Effect of Reducing Ambient Traffic-Related Air Pollution on Blood Pressure: A Randomized Crossover Trial.

Exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) may contribute to increased prevalence of hypertension and elevated blood pressure (BP) for residents of near-highway neighborhoods. Relatively few studies have investigated the effects of reducing TRAP exposure on short-term changes in BP. We assessed whether reducing indoor TRAP concentrations by using stand-alone high-efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) filters and limiting infiltration through doors and windows effectively prevented acute (ie, over a span of hours) increases in BP. Using a 3-period crossover design, 77 participants were

Prenatal exposure to traffic-related air pollution and risk of congenital diseases in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested links between exposure to ambient air pollutants and increased risk of congenital heart defects. However, few studies have investigated the association between other congenital diseases and traffic-related air pollution. In this study, we assessed the relationship between prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) with congenital diseases in South Korea. METHODS: Patients with one or more congenital diseases and a control group of patients with non-infective gastroenteritis and colitis with a case:control ratio o

Cardiovascular health, traffic-related air pollution and noise: are associations mutually confounded? A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: This review assessed the confounding effect of one traffic-related exposure (noise or air pollutants) on the association between the other exposure and cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted with the databases Medline and Embase. The confounding effects in studies were assessed by using change in the estimate with a 10 % cutoff point. The influence on the change in the estimate of the quality of the studies, the exposure assessment methods and the correlation between road noise and air pollutions were also assessed. RESULTS: Nine publications were ide

Neurobehavioral effects of exposure to traffic-related air pollution and transportation noise in primary schoolchildren.

BACKGROUND: Children living close to roads are exposed to both traffic noise and traffic-related air pollution. There are indications that both exposures affect cognitive functioning. So far, the effects of both exposures have only been investigated separately. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between air pollution and transportation noise on the cognitive performance of primary schoolchildren in both the home and school setting. METHODS: Data acquired within RANCH from 553 children (aged 9-11 years) from 24 primary schools were analysed using multilevel modelling with adjustment

Comparing exposure assessment methods for traffic-related air pollution in an adverse pregnancy outcome study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies reported adverse impacts of traffic-related air pollution exposure on pregnancy outcomes. Yet, little information exists on how effect estimates are impacted by the different exposure assessment methods employed in these studies. OBJECTIVES: To compare effect estimates for traffic-related air pollution exposure and preeclampsia, preterm birth (gestational age less than 37 weeks), and very preterm birth (gestational age less than 30 weeks) based on four commonly used exposure assessment methods. METHODS: We identified 81,186 singleton births during 1997-2006 at fo

Traffic-related air pollution: exposure and health effects in Copenhagen street cleaners and cemetery workers.

This questionnaire-based study found a significantly higher prevalence of chronic bronchitis, asthma, and several other symptoms in 116 Copenhagen street cleaners who were exposed to traffic-related air pollution at levels that were slightly lower than the 1987 World Health Organization-recommended threshold values, compared with 115 Copenhagen cemetery workers exposed to lower pollution levels. Logistic regression analysis, controlling for age and smoking, was conducted, and odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated to be 2.5 for chronic bronchitis (95% confidence interval = 1.

Non-stationary spatio-temporal modeling of traffic-related pollutants in near-road environments.

A problem often encountered in environmental epidemiological studies assessing the health effects associated with ambient exposure to air pollution is the spatial misalignment between monitors' locations and subjects' actual residential locations. Several strategies have been adopted to circumvent this problem and estimate pollutants concentrations at unsampled sites, including spatial statistical or geostatistical models that rely on the assumption of stationarity to model the spatial dependence in pollution levels. Although computationally convenient, the assumption of stationarity is often

Timing and Duration of Traffic-related Air Pollution Exposure and the Risk for Childhood Wheeze and Asthma.

RATIONALE: The timing and duration of traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) exposure may be important for childhood wheezing and asthma development. OBJECTIVES: We examined the relationship between TRAP exposure and longitudinal wheezing phenotypes and asthma at age 7 years. METHODS: Children completed clinical examinations annually from age 1 year through age 4 years and age 7 years. Parental-reported wheezing was assessed at each age, and longitudinal wheezing phenotypes (early-transient, late-onset, persistent) and asthma were defined at age 7 years. Participants' time-weighted exposure to

Urban traffic and pollutant exposure related to respiratory outcomes and atopy in a large sample of children.

Conflicting results have been reported for the relationship between traffic exposure and inception of atopy. The effect of traffic on the prevalence of asthma and atopy at school age was investigated in a representative population. Random samples of schoolchildren (n=7,509, response rate 83.7%) were studied using the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood phase-II protocol with skin-prick tests, measurements of specific immunoglobulin E and lung function. Traffic exposure was assessed via traffic counts and by an emission model which predicted soot, benzene and nitrogen dioxi

Traffic-related air pollutant exposure and physical performance in the Adult Changes in Thought cohort.

BACKGROUND: Declining physical function is common among older adults and is associated with reduced quality of life. There is little research on the relationship between air pollution and physical limitations, though exposure to air pollution is associated with many chronic conditions that lead to worsening physical function. This is especially true for several traffic-related air pollutants (TRAPs), as these pollutants can enter the circulatory system and lead to systemic inflammation. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal analysis in the Adult Changes in Thought study, a cohort of 5,305 olde

Social Inequities in Exposure to Traffic-Related Air and Noise Pollution at Public Schools in Texas.

Although children are particularly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of vehicular pollution and spend significant portions of their time at school, previous studies have not examined or compared school-level social inequities in exposure to both traffic-related air and noise pollution in the same study area. We addressed this gap through a case study in Texas-the second-largest US state based on total population and number of children. Vehicular pollution exposure was measured using: (1) outdoor concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a widely used proxy for traffic-related air pollution; an

The Role of Traffic-Related Air Pollution on Neurodegenerative Diseases in Older People: An Epidemiological Perspective.

Traffic-related air pollution is ubiquitous and almost impossible to avoid. It is important to understand the role that traffic-related air pollution may play in neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease, particularly among older populations and at-risk groups. There is a growing interest in this area among the environmental epidemiology literature and the body of evidence identifying this role is emerging and strengthening. This review focuses on the principal components of traffic-related air pollutants (particulate matter and nitrogen oxides)

NTP monograph on the systematic review of traffic-related air pollution and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) contributes significantly to ambient air pollution, especially in urban settings. Air pollution has been established as a risk factor for hypertension and cardiovascular disease in adults, but this effect is less studied in other susceptible populations. There is increasing evidence that air pollution may adversely affect hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (e.g., gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, eclampsia). OBJECTIVE: Because reports indicate that air pollution may be linked to hypertensive disorders, the National Toxicology Program (

Exposure to traffic-related air pollution and the composition of the gut microbiota in overweight and obese adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) exposure has been linked to type 2 diabetes and metabolic dysfunction in humans. Animal studies suggest that air pollutants may alter the composition of the gut microbiota, which may negatively impact metabolic health through changes in the composition and/or function of the gut microbiome. OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study was to determine whether elevated TRAP exposure was correlated with gut bacterial taxa in overweight and obese adolescents from the Meta-AIR (Metabolic and Asthma Incidence Research) study. The secondary aim was to e

Proximity to traffic, ambient air pollution, and community noise in relation to incident rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: The risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been associated with living near traffic; however, there is evidence suggesting that air pollution may not be responsible for this association. Noise, another traffic-generated exposure, has not been studied as a risk factor for RA. OBJECTIVES: We investigated proximity to traffic, ambient air pollution, and community noise in relation to RA in the Vancouver and Victoria regions of British Columbia, Canada. METHODS: Cases and controls were identified in a cohort of adults that was assembled using health insurance registration records. Inc

Traffic-related air pollution and risk of preterm birth in the San Joaquin Valley of California.

PURPOSE: To evaluate associations between traffic-related air pollution during pregnancy and preterm birth in births in four counties in California during years 2000 to 2006. METHODS: We used logistic regression to examine the association between the highest quartile of ambient air pollutants (carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter <10 and 2.5 μm) and traffic density during pregnancy and each of five levels of prematurity based on gestational age at birth (20-23, 24-27, 28-31, 32-33, and 34-36 weeks) versus term (37-42 weeks). We examined trimester averages and the last month a
