Trichuris trichiura was examined in the scanning electron microscope and revealed a double row of sucker-like structures at the anterior part. It is postulated that they may support the attachment of the worm in host tissues. The sheath of the spicule is covered with spikes and the vulval opening is surrounded by an elevated rim-like structure with indentations.

BACKGROUND: A common characteristic of Trichuris spp. infections in humans and animals is the variable but low efficacy of single-dose benzimidazoles currently used in mass drug administration programmes against human trichuriasis. The production of small numbers of large eggs among the standard-sized eggs of Trichuris trichiura is well known. Large eggs have also been observed in Trichuris muris, but they have not been studied previously. Stools from 28 of the 82 inhabitants on remote Little Andaman Island in India were examined for parasite eggs and cysts. Trichuris trichiura eggs were found in 27, Trichuris vulpis eggs in 5, Strongyloides stercoralis larvae in 3, hookworm eggs in 15, Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba coli cysts each in 9, Giardia lamblia in 6, Retortamonas sp. in 3, Iodoamoeba sp. in 2, and Chilomastix sp. in 2 stools. Ascaris lumbricoides eggs were not seen. The occurrence of T. vulpis eggs in 5 stools and the absence of A. lumbricoides eggs were considered unusual findings.

One hundred and twenty-eight children aged 4 to 11 years old in Dhaka, Bangladesh were treated for infections with Trichuris trichiura and other intestinal parasites using a single dose of 400 mg of albendazole. Only one Trichuris infection was apparently cured although egg counts fell by about 50%. A larger single dosage is recommended to treat Trichuris. Eleven out of 46 infections with Giardia intestinalis were not detected after treatment (p less than 0.001).

A severe outbreak of Trichuris suis infection in piglets is described. Fifteen per cent of the animals died and the morbidity, characterised by weight loss and diarrhoea, was over 50 per cent. The severity of symptoms observed in naturally infected pigs was related to the number of whipworms. A chemotherapeutic trial was worked out with flubendazole mixed in food for naturally infected and artificially infected piglets. A gravid female Trichuris was found in histopathologic sections of an appendix in a post-mortem examination, and a posterior extremity of a male Trichuris was recovered from the unsectioned portion of the same appendix. These parasites were identified as T. vulpis, the whipworm of dogs.
