Trigeminal nerve injury following accidental airbag deployment and assessment with quantitative sensory testing.

High velocity motor vehicle accidents are associated with an increase in mortality rates and a significant number of facial injuries. Accidental deployment of airbags and the associated release of hot gases can result in both thermal and mechanical injuries. The more commonly reported maxillofacial injuries include temporomandibular joint fractures and dislocations, dental trauma, facial nerve paralysis, and other orofacial pain complaints. The following case report describes a patient with facial trauma from the accidental deployment of an airbag resulting in complaints consistent with a neur

Distribution of P2X3 receptors in the rat trigeminal ganglion after inferior alveolar nerve injury.

The ATP-gated cation channel receptor P2X3 is associated with nociceptive primary sensory neurons. We have, using immunohistochemistry, examined the expression of P2X3 in rat trigeminal ganglia 4-22 days after ligation/section or chronic constriction of the mandibular inferior alveolar nerve. In the normal trigeminal ganglion the anti-P2X3 receptor antibody labeled 37-58% of all neurons. Double labeling demonstrated that about 70-95% of the small neurons that bind the isolectin I-B4 displayed P2X3-immunoreactivity, and that about 40% of larger RT97-positive nerve cells were P2X3 receptor-immun

An upper cervical spine injury producing paraesthesia in the distribution of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve.

A case is reported of a 37-year-old man who developed paraesthesia in the distribution of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve following an injury to the upper cervical spine during a game of rugby. The central pathways of the trigeminal nerve are discussed and it is proposed that mandibular fibres descended beyond their expected level in the spinal trigeminal nucleus, and that it was these fibres which were compressed in the unstable dislocation at the atlanto-axial joint producing the paraesthesia described. Other remote anatomical explanations for the paraesthesia are considered.

Effects of IncobotulinumtoxinA in the Infraorbital Nerve Chronic Constriction Injury Model of Trigeminal Pain in Rats.

Background/Objectives: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a debilitating neurological condition characterized by recurrent, severe pain linked to peripheral and central sensitization within trigeminal pathways. Current pharmacologic treatments are limited by inadequate efficacy or dose-limiting side effects, and botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT/A) has emerged as a viable option. However, its potential use in the management of TN is hampered by methodological limitations in existing studies and a lack of pivotal clinical trials. This study investigated the efficacy, optimal treatment site, preventiv

Mechanisms Underlying the Selective Therapeutic Efficacy of Carbamazepine for Attenuation of Trigeminal Nerve Injury Pain.

Different peripheral nerve injuries cause neuropathic pain through distinct mechanisms. Even the site of injury may impact underlying mechanisms, as indicated by the clinical finding that the antiseizure drug carbamazepine (CBZ) relieves pain because of compression injuries of trigeminal but not somatic nerves. We leveraged this observation in the present study hypothesizing that because CBZ blocks voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs), its therapeutic selectivity reflects differences between trigeminal and somatic nerves with respect to injury-induced changes in VGSCs. CBZ diminished ongoing

TRESK alleviates trigeminal neuralgia induced by infraorbital nerve chronic constriction injury in rats.

Trigeminal neuralgia commonly results in pain behaviors and cognitive impairment. Convincing evidence suggests that TWIK-related spinal cord K+ (TRESK) exerts antinociceptive and neuroprotective effects. However, its possible potentials in trigeminal neuralgia remain unclear. Trigeminal neuralgia model was established in rats by generating an infraorbital nerve chronic constriction injury, and rats received intrathecal injections of TRESK-overexpressing lentivirus and siRNA expression vector-targeted against TRESK (si-TRESK) into the trigeminal ganglions. Mechanical allodynia was evaluated by

[Effects of tetramethylpyrazine on trigeminal neuralgia induced by chronic constriction injury of infraorbital nerve in rats].

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a kind of recurrent transient and severe pain that is limited to the trigeminal nerve in one or more branches. The clinical incidence of TN is high, which seriously affects the quality of life of the patients and is difficult to cure. The present study investigated the effects of tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) on TN induced by chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve (ION-CCI) in rats. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to four groups: sham, sham treated with TMP (Sham+TMP), TN model (TN), and TN treated with TMP (TN+TMP). The rat TN mode

Neonatal sensory nerve injury-induced synaptic plasticity in the trigeminal principal sensory nucleus.

Sensory deprivation studies in neonatal mammals, such as monocular eye closure, whisker trimming, and chemical blockade of the olfactory epithelium have revealed the importance of sensory inputs in brain wiring during distinct critical periods. But very few studies have paid attention to the effects of neonatal peripheral sensory nerve damage on synaptic wiring of the central nervous system (CNS) circuits. Peripheral somatosensory nerves differ from other special sensory afferents in that they are more prone to crush or severance because of their locations in the body. Unlike the visual and au

Complex regional pain syndrome following trigeminal nerve injury: report of 2 cases.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a debilitating neuropathic pain condition that has been extensively reported in the extremities following variable degrees of nerve trauma. CRPS has rarely been reported in the orofacial region. We report 2 orofacial pain patients whose clinical phenotypes fit the criteria for CRPS. Two cases of orofacial complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) are described, both of which began following trigeminal nerve trauma. In case 1 the patient presented with redness of the ipsilateral ear during painful episodes, pain that extended into the ipsilateral arm and was

Facial nerve injury induces facilitation of responses in both trigeminal and facial nuclei of rat.

A study was made of the effects of facial nerve transection on trigeminal stimulation- evoked field potentials in the principal trigeminal (Pr5) and facial nuclei (7) in rats. Although the transected branch of the facial nerve contains pure motoric efferents, it resulted in enhanced responses in both Pr5 and 7. These electrophysiological results suggest a functional circuitry involving the whiskers, trigeminal nerve, Pr5 and 7 and the facial nerve as efferent. The disconnection (opening) of this loop results in enhanced responsiveness of the neurons in both Pr5 and 7.

Trigeminal nerve injuries following dental procedures: A retrospective analysis of malpractice claims from 2016 to 2023 in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Dental malpractice claims, which pertain to legal actions against dentists accused of clinical negligence that caused harm to patients, have increased in the past ten years in South Korea. The claims are caused by complications, particularly trigeminal nerve injuries, resulting from various dental procedures. Medicolegal issues related to trigeminal nerve injury have not been previously described in South Korea. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to identify the general, dental, and judicial characteristics of closed dental malpractice claims. METHODS: This study was designed as a…

TrkB-like immunoreactivity in trigeminal sensory nerve fibers of the rat molar tooth pulp: development and response to nerve injury.

The localization of TrkB, a signal transducing receptor for brain-derived neurotrophic factor and neurotrophin-4, was studied in the rat mandibular molar pulp during development and following nerve injury. Sections were incubated with rabbit polyclonal antiserum against the catalytic part of the TrkB receptor, thus only binding to full-length TrkB receptors, and examined by immunofluorescence microscopy and EM immunocytochemistry. At embryonic day 17, strongly TrkB-positive fibers were located in mandibular nerve trunks, in nerve fibers of deeper mesenchyme in close spatial relation to sites o

The expression of voltage-gated sodium channels in trigeminal nerve following chronic constriction injury in rats.

Objectives: Despite the etiology of trigeminal neuralgia has been verified by microvascular decompression as vascular compression of the trigeminal root, very few researches concerning its underlying pathogenesis has been reported in the literature. The present study focused on those voltage-gated sodium channels, which are the structural basis for generation of ectopic action potentials. Methods: The trigeminal neuralgia modeling was obtained with infraorbital nerve chronic constriction injury (ION-CCI) in rats. Two weeks postoperatively, the infraorbital nerve (TN), the trigeminal ganglion (

Antral bony wall erosion, trigeminal nerve injury, and enophthalmos after root canal surgery.

INTRODUCTION: The frequently used irrigant in dental surgery, sodium hypochlorite, is occasionally the cause of minor, usually circumscribed, adverse effects. Severe, extensive complications, with lasting sequelae, however, also can occur, as in the case we report herein. CASE REPORT: A 55-year-old woman underwent an endodontic procedure on a maxillary molar, whose roots, unknown to the surgeon, were protruding into the maxillary sinus. After sodium hypochlorite root canal irrigation, the patient immediately developed intense facial pain, facial edema, and periorbital cellulitis. An emergency
