The information on the Gambian form of African human trypanosomiasis (AHT), collected in Guinea, is analyzed. The fauna of tsetse flies currently numbers at least 8 species. Two species are the vectors of AHT. These include G.(N.) palpalis and G.(N.) tachinoides, the latter of which is the vector of animal trypanosomiasis ("nagana" cattle disease) as well. In the period of 1991 to 1997, the country's incidence of AHT was 9.6:100,000. The highest morbidity was established in the natural region of Lower Guinea (23.4:100,000, with mortality rates of 1.1 to 18.5%). A clinical study of the populati

BACKGROUND: Sleeping sickness (human African trypanosomiasis) is a parasitic infection transmitted by day-biting tsetse flies. The diagnostic standard is microscopy of blood, lymph node aspirates, or cerebrospinal fluid. The disease is invariably fatal if not treated. There are >300,000 new cases of sleeping sickness each year and approximately 100,000 deaths.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a British soldier who acquired sleeping sickness in Malawi. He gave no history of a painful insect bite but presented with classic early signs of sleeping sickness (a primary chancre, regional lymphadenopa

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is characterized by a major deregulation of the immune system. Hypergammaglobulinemia, auto-antibodies, and immunodepression are cardinal features. Parasitemia occurs in waves due to the successive appearance of parasites with different variable glycoprotein surface antigens (VGSA). Antigenic variation enables parasites to elude the host's immune defenses. Although high levels of immune complexes have been detected during HAT, it seems unlikely that they play a significant pathophysiological role. Numerous auto-antibodies have been detected. African trypanosomiasis of the Rhodesian variety occurred in an American who recently traveled to Tanzania. Skin findings included a fluctuant, indurated, tsetse-fly bite site (chancre) and a fleeting, erythematous, macular eruption. The diagnosis was confirmed by the presence of the organism in peripheral blood smears. The patient's condition responded to intravenous suramin. African trypanosomiasis should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients who have visited areas where this disease is endemic, and in whom the appropriate skin findings are present.

Comparative studies were carried out on serums from rabbits inoculated with several Trypanosoma strains and 50 serums from sleeping sickness cases. The techniques used were antigen-antibody reaction in gel according to Ouchterlony, and electrosynerese for which directions are outlined. Electrosynerese has been shown to be a much faster and more sensitive method of detecting precipitating antibodies in trypanosomiasis.

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT, or sleeping sickness) is a protozoan parasitic infection caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense or Trypanosoma brucei gambiense. These are neglected tropical diseases, and T.b. rhodesiense HAT is a zoonosis. We review current knowledge on the burden of HAT in sub-Saharan Africa, with an emphasis on the disability-adjusted life year (DALY), data sources, and methodological issues relating to the use of this metric for assessing the burden of this disease. We highlight areas where data are lacking to properly quantify the impact of these diseases, mainly rel

Major modifications of immune system have been observed in African trypanosomiasis. These immune reactions do not lead to protection and are also involved in immunopathology disorders. The major surface component (variable surface glycoprotein,VSG) is associated with escape to immune reactions, cytokine network dysfunctions and autoantibody production. Most of our knowledge result from experimental trypanosomiasis. Innate resistance elements have been characterised. In infected mice, VSG preferentially stimulates a Th 1-cell subset. A response of gamma delta and CD8 T cells to trypanosome anti
