THE EFFECT OF GRANULOCYTOPENIA ON EXPERIMENTAL TUBERCULIN FEVER.

The febrile responses of hypersensitive, granulocytopenic and hypersensitive, non-granulocytopenic animals to specific antigen have been compared with the following results: 1. Hypersensitive animals, whether granulocytopenic or not, had an equal febrile response when challenged with specific antigen. 2. Hypersensitive animals with agranulocytosis developed fever when challenged with specific antigen. 3. Serum from granulocytopenic, antigen-challenged, hypersensitive donors contained a pyrogenic factor as potent in normal recipients as was serum from non-granulocytopenic, hypersensitive donors

Tuberculin reactivity in schoolchildren, Kassala State, Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculin skin test (TST) is widely used for the assessment of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine efficacy and screening of latent TB infection (LTBI). Poor or no data are available on the reactivity of tuberculin in Kassala State. The aim of the present study was to assess the response to the BCG vaccine and to estimate the prevalence of LTBI and the annual rate annual risk of tuberculous infection (ARTI) among vaccinated school children using TST. METHODS: School-based cross-sectional study was conducted in three localities of Kassala State during 2016-2018. A cluster rando…

Positive tuberculin skin tests and isoniazid chemoprophylaxis.

The American Thoracic Society recommends that specific individuals who are classified as tuberculosis infected receive a year-long course of INH chemoprophylaxis. They further recommend that patients receiving medication be evaluated on a monthly basis to assess the individual for side effects related to the medication. The most prevalent side effects are hypersensitivity, GI distress, hepatitis and neurotoxicity. Subjective data relating to these side effects need to be elicited at every visit and a pertinent physical examination done. Careful monthly monitoring is required to evaluate the pa

[Tuberculin sensitivity in children and adolescents with tuberculosis].

The specific features of tuberculin sensitivity were studied in 210 children and adolescents aged 4-17 years who had active pulmonary tuberculosis. There were more common significant and hyperergic tuberculin sensitivities, conversion of tubercular tests, and an increase in tuberculin sensitivity. Timely phthisiological examination of patients with these values of tuberculin sensitivity could promote early detection of local forms of tuberculosis in 71.1% of the patients detected on their visit to a doctor. There was a correlation of the hyperergic tuberculin sensitivity with the phase of inco…

[Indications for, and the significance of, the tuberculin test in the Netherlands].

The almost 100-year-old tuberculin skin test still is the gold standard for diagnosing Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. The sensitivity of this test with the usual cut-off values is high, but may be decreased with impaired cellular immunity and at older age. The specificity is primarily determined by cross-reactivity to atypical mycobacterial infections and vaccination with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG). Positivity of the skin test after BCG vaccination decreases with time after vaccination and depends on the age when vaccinated. The tuberculin reaction can be boosted by repeated tubercu…

[Tuberculin sensitivity in infants and preschool children].

Marked fluctuations in sensitivity to tuberculin related to the time of nonspecific vaccinations were found in children aged 1 to 7 years vaccinated with BCG within the first week of life in annual Mantoux test (2 tuberculin units). At the age of 3 and 7 years vaccinations raise sensitivity to tuberculin causing a rise in positive reactions to tuberculin. This indicates changes in postvaccination allergy to BCG.

[Chromatographic analysis and immunobiologic properties of tuberculins].

Immunobiologic activities of tuberculin preparations and their components have been comparatively studied using gel filtration and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) techniques. It is shown that high-molecular weight fraction of protein-purified derivate tuberculin (PPD) had higher activity as compared to nonfractionated preparation in skin tests on guinea pigs sensitized with Mycobacterium bovis BCG as well as in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with affinity purified rabbit antibodies against PPD. Using the preparative HPLC-technique we failed to isolate a component of PPD having…
