Tungiasis Outbreak in Travelers From Madagascar.

Seven patients from a group of 16 travelers were diagnosed at our institution with one or more sand fleas on their toes, 1 day to 3 weeks after returning from Madagascar. A questionnaire was sent to the whole group to collect clinical and epidemiological information, which showed that 9 of 13 (69%) had received pre-travel medical advice, but none were aware of sand flea; thus prevention measures were rarely applied. Five of seven (71%) patients wore open sandals throughout the trip. Overall, 10 sand fleas were extracted.

[Tungiasis acquired in Chaco Province, Argentina].

A four-year old girl and her mother were assisted at the Hospital de Clínicas for 0.7 cm wide papules with a black central core and a white … penetrans eggs were identified. The patients received antibiotic therapy and tetanus immunization. Tungiasis, which originated in America, is a cutaneous parasitosis caused by Tunga penetrans. In endemic areas, it is advisable to wear shoes in order to avoid the penetration of the flea into the skin. The presence of this flea should be suspected whenever h …

[Tungiasis--an increasingly frequent vacation dermatosis].

Because of the increase in international air travel to the tropical areas, we often observe skin diseases now that were formerly restricted to the equatorial zones. As we have recently observed several cases of tungiasis in our department, we report here the epidemiology, clinical appearance and treatment of this "tourism-transmitted" rare form of tropical parasitosis.

Evidence of tungiasis in pre-Hispanic America.

Ancient parasites of the genus Tunga originated in America and, during the first half of the 19th century, were transported to the Eastern Hemisphere on transatlantic voyages. Although they were first documented by Spanish chroniclers after the arrival of Columbus, little is known about their presence in pre-Hispanic America. To evaluate the antiquity of tungiasis in America, we assessed several kinds of early documentation, including written evidence and pre-Incan earthenware reproductions. We identified 17 written documents and 4 anthropomorphic figures, of which 3 originated from the Chimu …

Tungiasis: Case Report of a Traveller to Kenya.

Tungiasis is a neglected parasitic skin disease caused by the permanent penetration of the female sand flea Tunga penetrans (also called jigger flea) into the skin of its host. Growing urbanisation, improved housing and the use of appropriate footwear have presumably led to an overall reduction of the occurrence of this ectoparasitosis within the last few decades. However, it is still highly prevalent in regions where people live in extreme poverty, such as in many Latin American and African countries [1, 2]. We report the case of a 44-year-old woman who returned from an excursion trip to Keny…

[Tungiasis case after a trip to Kenya].

Tungiasis is an ectoparasitic skin disease caused by infestation by the female sand flea, Tunga penetrans. Prevalence in endemic areas may reach 83%, while it is rare in non-endemic areas. However, an increase in international travel to and from the affected regions may lead to a rise in the number of cases in non-endemic countries. We present a Danish case of tungiasis contracted during a trip to Kenya.

[Imported case of human tungiasis in Hungary].

INTRODUCTION: Tungiasis is a parasitic skin disease due to the permanent penetration of the female sand flea T. penetrans (Linnaeus, 1758) into the skin of its host. CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old male patient was observed in May 2005 at the Outpatient Department of Dermato-Venerology Szent Rókus Hospital in Budapest because he felt the sensation of a foreign body growing under the skin of his left big toe. When the lesion occurred he was at Brazilian seaside, where he often walked barefooted. 6-7 days after, at the left big toe he saw on the margin oedematous, at the centre brownish punctuated l…

[Tungiasis: a rare consequence of the fascination by the exotic?].

The paper reports three cases of tungiasis observed within the space of 6 months in patients who had spent part of their holidays in the Ivory Coast, Brazil and Senegal respectively. Spontaneous recovery probably makes the observation of this disease more rare.

Tungiasis - A Janus-faced parasitic skin disease.

Tungiasis is a parasitic skin disease caused by the penetration of female sand fleas (Tunga penetrans). It is acquired when people walk barefoot or rest on soil, where sand fleas have completed the off-host cycle. Tungiasis is a classic poverty-associated disease which belongs to the family of neglected tropical diseases (NTD). It has a Janus-face: while in travellers tungiasis usually is a benign self-limiting skin disease, inhabitants of endemic areas suffer from heavy infestations and severe, frequently debilitating and incapacitating morbidity. We describe the epidemiological and clinical …

Severe tungiasis in Western Tanzania: case series.

Tungiasis is caused by infestation with the sand flea (Tunga penetrans). This ectoparasitosis is endemic in economically depressed communities in South American and African countries. However, data on the epidemiology of tungiasis in Tanzania are very limited and the disease does not receive much attention from health care professionals. During a community cross sectional survey in northwest Tanzania, we identified five individuals extremely infested with high number of parasites. A total of 435 lesions were recorded with patients presenting with >75 lesions and showed signs of intense acute a…

Clinical and epidemiological survey of tungiasis in Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a dermal parasitic infection, classified as a neglected tropical disease. Madagascar is one of endemic countries which have been committed for decades to control the tungiasis as a public health issue. Despite this medical importance, little is known about the prevalence and epidemiology of the disease in this country. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was performed in two endemic foci of Antananarivo and Toamasina. RESULTS: In total, 2971 suspected individuals were surveyed. Of them, 643 individuals were excluded due to absence or refusing clinical exami…
