Unsuppressed viral load after intensive adherence counselling in rural eastern Uganda; a case of Kamuli district, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The East Central (EC) region of Uganda has the least viral suppression rate despite having a relatively low prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Although the viral suppression rate in Kamuli district is higher than that observed in some of the districts in the region, the district has one of the largest populations of people living with HIV (PLHIV). We sought to examine the factors associated with viral suppression after the provision of intensive adherence counselling (IAC) among PLHIV in the district. METHODS: We reviewed records of PLHIV and used them to construct …

How Uganda reversed its HIV epidemic.

Uganda is one of only two countries in the world that has successfully reversed the course of its HIV epidemic. There remains much controversy about how Uganda's HIV prevalence declined in the 1990s. This article describes the prevention programs and activities that were implemented in Uganda during critical years in its HIV epidemic, 1987 to 1994. Multiple resources were aggregated to fuel HV prevention campaigns at multiple levels to a far greater degree than in neighboring countries. We conclude that the reversed direction of the HIV epidemic in Uganda was the direct result of these interve…

Trends in inequality in maternal and child health and health care in Uganda: Analysis of the Uganda demographic and health surveys.

BACKGROUND: Uganda has made great strides in improving maternal and child health. However, little is known about how this improvement has been distributed across different socioeconomic categories, and how the health inequalities have changed over time. This study analyses data from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) conducted in 2006, 2011, and 2016 in Uganda, to assess trends in inequality for a variety of mother and child health and health care indicators. METHODS: The indicators studied are acknowledged as critical for monitoring and evaluating maternal and child health status. These in…

Treatment compliance among adult cervical cancer patients receiving care at Uganda cancer institute, Uganda: a retrospective data review.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers and a major cause of morbidity among women globally. Chemoradiation therapy is the preferred standard treatment for women with stage IB to IVA. However, the benefits of this treatment can only be achieved if patients adhere to the treatment guidelines. In this study, the proportion of compliance or adherence to chemo-radiation treatment among cervical cancer patients at Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) was determined. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study that reviewed data retrospectively for 196 cervical cancer patients who were…

Rabies research in Uganda - A scoping review.

Rabies remains endemic in Uganda and is a priority zoonotic disease due to its significant public health burden. Although Uganda has committed to eliminating dog-mediated human rabies deaths by 2030, operational and financial challenges persist. A key gap is the lack of a focused research agenda and insufficient funding for its implementation, highlighting the need to map existing research to guide future priorities. This scoping review, thus, aimed at describing and mapping the existing research on rabies in Uganda by identifying, categorizing, and summarizing existing research, while highlig…

Power, policy and abortion care in Uganda.

Unsafe abortion practices remain the major contributor to maternal death in Uganda, impeding the achievement of universal health coverage and quality of maternal health care. Using an ethnographic design and critical discourse analysis, we explored the operations of power in setting maternal healthcare priorities, as evident at the 2018 Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, Child and Adolescents Health Conference. Observational data were collected of the policy-making activities, processes and events and key informant interviews were conducted with 27 participants. We describe how neoliberal and s…

Bacteremia in febrile cancer patients in Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the predominant bacterial species causing bacteremia among febrile cancer patients, and their antibacterial resistance profiles at the Uganda Cancer Institute. RESULTS: We enrolled in-patients with a documented fever (≥ 37.5 °C). Bacteria from positive blood cultures were identified using standard methods biochemically. Antibacterial susceptibility testing was performed with the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. From a total of 170 febrile episodes, positive blood cultures were obtained from 24 (14.1%). A positive culture was more likely to b…

Mancozeb Residue on Tomatoes in Central Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Mancozeb belongs to a group of pesticides known as dithiocarbamates (DTC) that are a non-systemic group of pesticides extensively used in Uganda to protect crops from fungal diseases. OBJECTIVES: This study was done in 5 selected districts of Central Uganda with a focus on markets and farms to investigate the current mancozeb concentrations on tomatoes and identify key areas of improvement to minimize human exposure. METHODS: Tomato samples were analyzed for mancozeb residue determined as carbon disulfide (CS2) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). RESULTS: All the sa…

Disease diagnosis in primary care in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The overall burden of disease (BOD) especially for infectious diseases is higher in Sub-Saharan Africa than other regions of the world. Existing data collected through the Health Management Information System (HMIS) may not be optimal to measure BOD. The Infectious Diseases Capacity Building Evaluation (IDCAP) cooperated with the Ugandan Ministry of Health to improve the quality of HMIS data. We describe diagnoses with associated clinical assessments and laboratory investigations of outpatients attending primary care in Uganda. METHODS: IDCAP supported HMIS data collection at 36 h…

Genetic diversity of Ascaris in southwestern Uganda.

Despite the common occurrence of ascariasis in southwestern Uganda, helminth control in the region has been limited. To gain further insights into the genetic diversity of Ascaris in this area, a parasitological survey in mothers (n=41) and children (n=74) living in two villages, Habutobere and Musezero, was carried out. Adult Ascaris worms were collected from infected individuals by chemo-expulsion using pyrantel pamoate treatment. Genetic diversity within these worms was assessed by inspection of DNA sequence variation in a mitochondrial marker and length polymorphism at microsatellite loci.…

Gay and bisexual men in Kampala, Uganda.

HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects gay and bisexual men around the world; however, little is known about this population in sub-Saharan Africa. We conducted a respondent-driven sampling survey of gay and bisexual men in Kampala, Uganda (N = 224). Overall, 61% reported themselves as "gay" and 39% as "bisexual". Gay and bisexual men were 92% Ugandan; 37% had unprotected receptive anal sex in the last six months, 27% were paid for sex, 18% paid for sex, 11% had history of urethral discharge. Perception that gay and bisexual men are at risk for HIV infection was low. Gay and bisexual men in Kampa…

Eosinophilic glomerulonephritis in children in Southwestern Uganda.

Acute renal disease is common in sub-Saharan Africa, with high mortality. Its etiology is poorly understood; quartan malaria owing to Plasmodium malariae was implicated in previous series. Few previous studies have included histological data; furthermore, much of the literature pre-dates the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic. We report prospective analysis of acute proteinuric renal disease in children in rural Uganda. Clinical and laboratory data are presented on 65 patients (aged 2-14 years, mean 8.4; 35 male, 30 female) in 41 of whom histological diagnosis was obtained by renal bi…
