BACKGROUND: The study aimed to assess the compliance of procalcitonin (PCT) testing protocols for sepsis diagnosis and antibiotic therapy guidance and evaluate the economic impact of unnecessary or inappropriate testing.
METHODS: The time intervals between tests were evaluated for all PCT requested in a tertiary hospital between January 2022 and December 2023. A cost of 20 €/test was calculated for each PCT.

We present a case of olfactory reference syndrome (ORS) with complaints of bromhidrosis. This patient underwent a lumbar sympathectomy to correct the imagined body odor problem. The patient reported experiencing an improvement after surgery, but later, the olfactory symptoms returned. The main objective with ORS patients should be to begin psychiatric treatment early. Other treatments usually appear to be ineffective and cause great dissatisfaction.

Blood culture contamination (BCC) leads to increased costs and patient harms. We reviewed 525 BCC cases and found 71.2% of BCC cases were ordered for indications with low risk for bacteremia and most received unnecessary tests and antibiotics. Diagnostic stewardship of blood cultures may reduce BCC and its associated costs.

We report on the case of a 90-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with constipation for 1 week and abdominal fullness for 2 days. Abdominal plain film radiography disclosed intramural air in the colon, which indicated pneumatosis coli (PC). Spigelian hernias (SHs) are rarely observed among children. The diagnosis is not difficult to make once it has been considered. Pyoderma gangrenosum is an uncommon ulcerative skin disorder that is often associated with underlying systemic diseases, the most common of which is inflammatory bowel disease. We report an illustrative case of a 36-year-old woman with pyoderma gangrenosum occurring at surgical sites and at sites of trauma. She had associated Crohn disease. OBJECTIVE: Urethral diverticulum has been identified in 0.6-6% of women and is diagnosed most frequently in the third to fifth decades. Combined diverticulectomy and anti-incontinence surgery are usually undertaken for patients with urethral diverticulum who present with symptoms of stress urinary incontinence. However, this approach may not always be necessary.
