In cases where there is clinical suspicion of urethral lesion, blind urethral catheterization should never be performed. Establishment of a suprapubic catheter is a safe and adequate primary treatment. Retrograde urethrography may be undertaken in the subsequent diagnostic process and, in cases of simple contusions without interruption of continuity, urethral catheterization is performed. A case of complete urethral duplication in a child is presented. The malformation consisted of a normal urethra and another epispadial dorsal urethra ending at the dome of the bladder. This is a rare variant of this type of malformation. Incontinence was the surgical indication. The clinical and urodynamic characteristics of 54 women with unstable urethras (falls of urethral pressures of at least 20 cm H2O) were compared with those of 171 patients with stable urethras. The unstable-urethra patients were younger and presented with an increased incidence of marked urgency and a lower incidence of genuine stress incontinence. A case is described of a giant acquired diverticulum of the anterior portion of the urethra. The cause was stricture of the penile part of the urethra. With time a large number of calculi developed in the diverticulum. The method of surgical treatment and the postoperative course are described calling attention to the importance of postoperative management of such cases.

Severe traumatic loss of urethra during pelvic fracture was replaced in a small boy by perineal transposition of the penile urethra. In the first stage a "pull-through" operation was performed as described by Solowow-Badenoch, which resulted in a total withdrawal of penis. In the second the urethra was cut behind the glans, the penis was straightened and the urethral meatus was opened in the perineum. In the third stage the perineal hypospadias was treated.

The authors present two cases of polyps of the urethra occurring exclusively in boys: one in a 12-month-old infant, the other in a 15-year-old boy. In both patients the polyp caused dysuria or urinary retention. Diagnosis was based on mictional cystography. This examination usually gives a picture of a filling defect spotted in the area of the bladder neck. During miction the defect may move deeper into the urethra. Two patients with tuberculosis of the urethra, who presented with multiple periurethral fistulas and a periurethral abscess, are described.
