Source of a micro-nutrient in a semi-synthetic basal diet as a causative factor in inducing urinary calculi in rats and its inhibition by PSC 833, a potent inhibitor of P-glycoprotein.

We report a serendipitous finding of urinary calculi in rats fed a semi-synthetic basal diet. This observation was made during ongoing studies to evaluate the inhibitory effect of PSC 833, a potent inhibitor of P-glycoprotein, on development of tumors in rodent tumor model systems. A large number of specific-pathogen-free (SPF) female Sprague-Dawley and SPF male Fischer 344 rats being fed the diet were euthanized when it became evident clinically that they were uremic. At necropsy, the renal pelvis, ureters, and urinary bladder contained numerous calculi. The presence of urinary calculi was de

Integration of phylogenomics and molecular modeling reveals lineage-specific diversification of toxins in scorpions.

BACKGROUND: Corynebacterium urealyticum is a Gram positive, slow-growing bacterium that is a most commonly cause of encrusted cystitis. A major clinical problem is recurrent urinary tract infections with encrustation of the bladder mucosa especially for multimorbid individuals with weakened immune systems. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 75-year-old male who was admitted to the urology department with perineal and urethral pain, dysuria, and macrohematuria. His medical history included complicated benign prostatic hyperplasia, vesical and splenic calculi, chronic cystitis, recurrent com

Uracil-induced urolithiasis and the development of reversible papillomatosis in the urinary bladder of F344 rats.

Male F344 rats were given a diet supplemented with uracil at concentrations of 1 or 3% for 15 or 30 wk. In the group given 3% uracil, numerous calculi of uracil were observed in the urinary tract with marked hyperplasia and papillomas of the urinary bladder mucosa in Wk 15 and 30. In Wk 30, dysplasia of the ureteral mucosa and one transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder were also found. Neither these marked proliferative lesions nor calculi except for one papilloma were observed in rats maintained on normal basal diet for 15 wk after a diet containing 3% uracil for 15 wk. In the group given

10-cm mature cystic teratoma of the bladder in 48-year-old female misdiagnosed as bladder calculus: Management with robotic partial cystectomy.

Cystic teratomas are a common ovarian neoplasm that are rarely found in other locations of the body, namely the sacrococcygeal region and anterior mediastinum. Localization to the urinary bladder is exceedingly rare, with only a few cases documented in the literature. Cystic teratomas are usually asymptomatic and found incidentally, but localization to the bladder can present as irritative lower urinary tract symptoms and/or mimic urinary tract calculi. We report the rare case of a mature cystic teratoma of the urinary bladder, presenting as foul-smelling urine with recurrent urinary tract inf

Ammonium acid urate crystal formation in adult North American stone-formers.

Although ammonium acid urate (AAU) stones are endemic in Asia, pure AAU calculi have almost disappeared from industrialized countries and clinical pathophysiologic relevance of sporadic stones containing AAU crystals is currently unknown. We reviewed 1,396 crystallographic stone analyses performed in our institution over a 10-year period. Prevalence of stones containing AAU crystals and predominantly AAU stones were 3.1% and 0.2%, respectively. In more than two thirds of cases, AAU crystals represented less than 10% of stone crystal composition. No pure AAU stone was found. According to crysta

[Renal calculosis in pediatrics].

Urinary stones (calculi) are not a rare problem in pediatrics, presenting a prevalence of 1 case/20,000 children/year. Both nephrocalcinosis (deposition of calculi within the renal parenchyma) and urolithiasis (stone formation in the calyces, renal pelvis and bladder) may occur. Etiology of urinary stones involves metabolic, infectious, anatomic and idiopathic causes. Diagnosis and treatment require knowledge of a wide range of diseases. After urinary stones have been suspected, biohumoral tests and ultrasound examination should be routinely performed.

Malacoplakia of the bladder combined with infected renal calculi: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: The malacoplakia of the bladder is a rare chronic acquired infection- associated granulomatous disease and even less common in combination with urinary stones. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 58-year-old female patient with malacoplakia of the bladder combined with renal calculi. The patient was admitted to the hospital with bilateral low back pain for one month and space-occupying lesions of the bladder for three days. Preoperative imaging suggested space-occupying lesions of the bladder: high probability of bladder cancer. Following the anti-infection treatment, the

Vesical calculi formation on the slit valves of a migrated distal end of ventriculoperitoneal shunt.

Various complications of distal end of the ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt have been described in the literature. We present, here, an extremely rare and potentially severe complication of vesical calculi formation on the slit valves of distal end of VP shunt which erosively migrated into the urinary bladder. Suprapubic cystolithotomy performed, peritoneal end of the tube found to be eroding and entering into the bladder with two calculi firmly stuck to slit valves in the distal end of the tubing were removed. Shunt was functional, therefore, it was pulled out and repositioned on the superior

A fragment of Foley catheter balloon as a cause of Bladder stone in woman.

Urinary bladder calculi are rarely seen in women and any history of previous pelvic surgery must, therefore, raise suspicion of an iatrogenic etiology. According to the literature, fewer than 2% of all bladder calculi occur in female subjects and, thus, their presence should provoke careful assessment of the etiology. We report one case of a fragment of Foley catheter balloon as a cause of Bladder stone in 28 years old woman. We analyzed the diagnosis, aspect and therapeutic management of this case which is the first described in literature to our knowledge.

Urinary calculi successfully expelled in a patient through traditional Chinese exercise: A case report.

RATIONALE: Urinary calculi are hard mineral deposits that typically require medication or surgery, such as lithotripsy. This case report presents traditional Chinese exercises (TCEs) as a potential alternative for stone expulsion. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 41-year-old male with no history of urinary tract stones, experienced sudden severe lower back and abdominal pain accompanied by nausea and vomiting. DIAGNOSIS: Computed tomography scan revealed a small calculus at the distal end of the left ureter (within the bladder wall), approximately 2 mm in size, with mild hydronephrosis in the ureter and

Lower tract urolithiasis after prostatectomy.

Nine cases of lower tract urolithiasis after prostatectomy are reported. In addition to these 9 cases 223 from the world literature and 10 from our previous experience also are reviewed. Stones may form after prostatectomy in various locations of the lower urinary tract, including the bladder, bladder diverticulum, prostatic fossa, simultaneously in the bladder and prostatic fossa, and, occasionally, in an iatrogenic pouch. They occur after all forms of prostatectomy, that is surgical or endoscopic, and after benign as well as malignant prostatic lesions. Calculi that form in the bladder most

[Therapy of bladder calculi--trends and results of a mainly transurethral oriented clinic].

From 1975 to 1985 519 patients with urinary calculi were treated in the Urologic Clinic of the Berlin-Buch Hospitals. 57.6% of them were treated by lithotripsy and TUR-P, 14.8% by lithotripsy alone, 11.8% by stone removal and transvesical adenomectomy and 15.8% by suprapubic cystotomy only. The diagnosis of the four forms of therapy is described. The trend in the conception of treatment goes to the treatment of calculi transurethrally in combination with the simultaneous removal of the obstruction of the outflow from the urinary bladder. Since October 1985 the electrohydraulic lithotripsy has

Primary vaginal stones.

Calculi composed of urinary salts rarely occur outside the urinary tract. In female subjects such calculi occuring in the vagina are uncommon, with only 26 cases reported thus far. These stones may be primary or secondary. Primary stones are formed in the vagina owing to the deposition of urinary salts as a result of continuous urinary leakage into the vagina. They have been described in association with urinary leakage caused by vesicovaginal fistulas, urethrovaginal fistulas, an ectopic vaginal ureter in a 7-year-old child and incontinence owing to a neurogenic bladder. A secondardy vaginal

Laparoscopic transvesical removal of erosive mesh after transobturator tape procedure.

We have experienced two cases of intravesical transobturator tape (TOT) tape successfully removed by laparoscopic transvesical procedure. Patient 1 was a 67-year-old woman complaining of irritative symptoms of the urinary bladder. In another hospital she had undergone anterior corporrhaphy and a TOT procedure to treat a cystocele and stress urinary incontinence (SUI) 17 months before the initial consultation. A cystoscopy revealed tape extrusion and adherent calculi at the 4 to 5 O'clock position of the bladder neck. After filling the bladder with carbon dioxide, three 5-mm ports were placed i

A radiological study of urinary tract disease in Port Moresby 1972-74.

During a 21/2 year period at Port Moresby, 852 patients had intravenous pyelograms. Two thirds of the patients were males and over half were Papua New Guineans. 34% of the patients had detectable urinary tract abnormalities of whom 38% had urinary calculi. Renal and ureteric calculi were particularly common in expatriate males, being found twice as commonly as in Papua New Guinean males. Although there were some Papua New Guinean male children with bladder calculi, the frequency appeared less than that found in some other developing countries. Other common findings included congenital urinary

Giant vesicle calculi leading to spontaneous bladder rupture and acute renal failure: an unusual presentation.

Spontaneous rupture of the urinary bladder is extremely rare. We report a case of a 70-year-old man with spontaneous bladder rupture secondary to neglected giant vesicle calculi who presented as acute renal failure. The patient was stabilised with per-urethral catheterisation and extravesical drain placement. About 700 mL pus mixed with urine was drained through the per-urethral catheter and approximately 2000 mL of pus was drained through the extravesical drain. Cystolithotomy showed two large calculi which were removed.
