[The urinary tract in pregnancy].

Pregnancy is associated with morphologic alterations of the urinary tract, of which physiological ureterohydronephrosis is the most common. Acute pyelonephritis and obstruction by stones are the two most frequent urinary tract diseases of pregnancy. Medical imaging aims at differentiating physiological ureterohydronephrosis from obstruction and at detecting infections. Ultrasonography plays a central role. Limited roentgenographic investigations can be performed during the second and third trimester. Magnetic resonance imaging can be expected to gain more widespread use in the near future.

The cranberry and the urinary tract.

Cranberry products have been heralded as natural treatments for urinary tract infections (UTIs) and have been widely used for this purpose. Current evidence favours an antibacterial role for the cranberry's natural polyphenols or tannins. Although limited species- and strain-specific direct inhibition has been determined in vitro, it has been suggested that a key mechanism of inhibition, especially for the abundant uropathogenic E. coli, relies on anti-adhesion properties. Many studies of prevention have been complicated due to the enrollment of patients who have had complicated urinary tracts…

Malformations of the urinary tract.

Between 1967 and 1977, 1500 children with malformations of the urinary tract were operated upon at the paediatric surgical department of the University of Tubingen. Ten children died in the early postoperative period or later on: Two patients died after operative correction of bladder extrophy following pneumonia and pyelonephritis and uraemia and urinary infection respectively. One child with a myelomeningocele had an ileal conduit performed and died two days after operation of peritonitis and urinary ascites. Two older children with reflux died in spite of successful ureteroneocystostomy, on…

Urinary tract infections and catheter-associated urinary tract infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

SUMMARYUrinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common infections in otherwise healthy individuals. UTI is also common in healthcare settings where patients often require urinary catheters to alleviate urinary retention. The placement of a urinary catheter often leads to catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) caused by a broad range of opportunistic pathogens, commonly referred to as ESKAPE (Enterococcus, Staphylococcus, Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Enterobacter) pathogens. Our understanding of CAUTI is complicated by the differences in pathogens, in initial…
