OBJECTIVE: Epidermoid cysts are rarely located in the uvula. To date, epidermoid cyst of the uvula has not been reported in a child at preschool age. We present clinical and histopathological characteristics of an epidermoid cyst in a child with uvula mass.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review.
RESULTS: A 5-year-old boy was seen in the pediatric otolaryngology clinic for assessment of a uvula mass. The mass was detected during a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy performed for sleep-related breathing disorder. The mass was completely removed and the final diagnosis was epidermoid cyst.

UPPP includes uvulotomy. The uvula works as the pilot for eating and swallowing. We performed an operation which left the uvula intact and opened the pharynx by Z-opening the palate, Z-pharyngoplasty (ZPP). Twenty-four patients were studied before and after ZPP. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of the modified Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) where uvula is preserved in the operation, and whether the postoperative complications are diminished.

BACKGROUND: Alternations in pharyngeal structure and function are considered fundamental in the pathogenesis of snoring or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Tuberculosis, and non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections are becoming more common thus it is more likely that otolaryngologists will encounter these conditions. We describe an otherwise well patient, with symptoms and signs from chronic uvular inflammation, who proved to have a primary mycobacterial infection. This is an unique presentation in the literature and reminds clinicians of the need, where uncertainty exists in diagnosis, to consider mycobacterial infections.

Carcinoma of the soft palate and uvula is a rare form of oropharyngeal neoplasm with incidence ranging from 5% to 12% of all oropharyngeal carcinomas. The lesions are more commonly found in men in the sixth and seventh decade of life. Because of the high incidence of potential velopharyngeal incompetence, surgical resections are usually reserved for the lesions confined to the uvula, where larger lesions are treated with radiation therapy.

The musculus uvulae and the levator veli palatini muscle were studied with electromyography (EMG) in three normal young adult subjects. Patterns of EMG activity for the musculus uvulae were similar to those of the levator veli palatini for all three subjects. When differences in EMG activity between the two muscles were found, the tasks did not involve speech. A study of velopharyngeal status after partial excision of musculus uvulae, as in total uvulectomy, has been carried out in 15 adults with normally formed soft palates. We describe the first case of granular cell tumor (GCT) of the uvula, which occurred in an 18-year-old woman. GCT is a relatively rare tumor, and is almost always benign. The most frequent locations are the skin and the oral cavity. These tumors usually present clinically as small, slowly growing tumors of characteristic histological appearance. Although its histogenesis is uncertain, our study as well as recent reports support a currently held theory of a neurogenic derivation. The recommended treatment for the granular cell tumor is local excision whenever possible.
