Bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, trichomonal vaginitis and aerobic vaginitis in women from Egypt.

INTRODUCTION: Infectious vaginitis is prevalent in developing countries. Most of the females suffer from vaginal infections at least once per lifetime. Due to limited resources, many infections are misdiagnosed or undiagnosed. Good diagnosis of these infections is critically important and will definitely help to guide treatment and prevent recurrence. METHODS: A total of 1080 vaginal swabs were collected from symptomatic females. Nugent's score and Amsel's criteria were applied to diagnose bacterial vaginosis (BV). A rapid test was used to identify Gardnerella vaginalis. Trichomonal vaginitis…

Vaginitis: Diagnosis and Treatment.

Vaginitis is a general term for inflammation of the vagina with symptoms such as vulvovaginal itching, burning, irritation, dyspareunia, odor, or abnormal vaginal discharge. It is a common condition that results in 5 million to 10 million office visits annually. The leading infectious causes of vaginitis are bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and trichomoniasis. Noninfectious causes include atrophic, irritant, and inflammatory vaginitis. Bacterial vaginosis usually presents with a thin, homogenous vaginal discharge and a fishy odor. Vulvovaginal candidiasis often manifests with a w…

Common Causes of Vaginitis.

PURPOSE: Apolipoprotein A1 (APOA1) is a potential crucial protein and treatment goal for pathological myopia in humans. This study set out to discover the function of APOA1 in scleral remodeling in myopia and its underlying mechanisms. METHODS: A myopic cell model was induced using hypoxia. Following loss- and gain-of function experiments, the expression of the myofibroblast transdifferentiation-related and collagen production-related factors Forkhead box M1 (FOXM1), APOA1, and methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3) in the myopic cell model was examined by quantitative reverse transcription polyme

Management of persistent vaginitis.

With vaginitis remaining a common condition that leads women to seek care, it is not surprising that some women develop chronic vulvovaginal problems that are difficult to diagnose and treat. With a differential diagnosis that encompasses vulvar disorders and infectious and noninfectious causes of vaginitis, accurate diagnosis is the cornerstone of choosing effective therapy. Evaluation should include a symptom-specific history, careful vulvar and vaginal examination, and office-based tests (vaginal pH, amine test, saline and 10% potassium hydroxide microscopy). Ancillary tests, especially yea…

[Bacterial vaginitis: general overview].

Bacteria are the most frequently detected agents in women, clinically complaining of vaginal discharge. The studies have shown that the vaginal microflora of women with bacterial vaginitis have altered from Lactobacillus spp. to various anaerobic bacteria. Gardnerella vaginalis is found in vaginal flora of women with bacterial vaginitis as well as in healthy women, while anaerobic bacteria such as Mobiluncus and Prevotella are the causative agents for bacterial vaginosis. For the laboratory diagnosis of bacterial vaginitis, direct microscopy is one of the most commonly used methods, and for th…

Clothing factors and vaginitis.

Associations of clothing factors and vulvovaginal symptoms, signs, and microbiology were sought in 203 women seeking care at a university family medicine clinic. Clothing factors studied were use of panty hose, underwear for sleep, cotton lining panels, and pants vs skirts. Women wearing and not wearing panty hose had similar rates of vaginitis symptoms and signs, but yeast vaginitis was about three times more common among wearers. Relationships of other clothing factors to vaginitis were not found. Nonspecific vaginitis was not found to be related to clothing.

Strategies for diagnosing vaginitis.

Detailed history, physical examination, laboratory, and follow-up data were obtained from 821 patients presenting to a primary care clinic over an 18-month period with the symptoms of vaginal infection or urinary tract infection (UTI). Information useful in deciding when to perform a vaginal examination, when to obtain various types of cultures, and when to perform microscopic examination of a saline suspension or Gram stain is presented. Of particular interest were the findings that patients with dysuria more commonly have vaginitis than UTI, the superiority of a saline examination to other m…
