Vertigo is caused by unilateral vestibular dysfunction. Unilateral vestibular dysfunction represents either vestibular overactivity as benig … gorous diagnosis of the cause of vertigo, ideally one would have robust, reproducible, quantitative vestibular function tests sensitive to dysfunction of each of the five sensory regions in each ear. In working towards this ideal we have, over the last 15 years, developed three new vestibular function tests: (1) impulsive tests of individual semicircular canal function, (2 …

Twelve patients undergoing unilateral vestibular neurectomy for the treatment of refractory vertigo were investigated. Vestibular motion perception was assessed using a self-rotational task and "vestibular remembered saccades". Cervical perception was also measured with remembered saccades. The tests were performed pre- and post-operatively to examine changes in vestibular and cervical perception following an acute vestibular lesion, and to monitor the progress of vestibular compensation. These perception tests were carried out in conjunction with a conventional evaluation of the vestibular oc

The clinical findings in 53 patients with bilateral vestibular failure (BVF) seen in a neurological hospital are reported. Bilateral acoustic neuromas were excluded. Seven patients (13%) had progressive cerebellar degeneration; these patients had no hearing complaints but showed gait ataxia, abnormal eye movements and cerebellar atrophy on neuro-imaging. Referral in these patients was primarily for eye movement assessment, and BVF was usually unsuspected. Neuropathies were present in 5 patients (9%), usually with normal central (brainstem-cerebellar) ocular motor function and variable patterns

OBJECTIVE: Gamma-knife radiosurgery (GKS) for vestibular schwannomas (VSs) has become popular during the last two decades, and a promising t … eral VS that underwent GKS were prospectively recruited. All of them received a battery of auditory-vestibular function tests including PTA, caloric, and cVEMP tests before and after GKS at each time point (1, 6, and 12 months). Our data also included the tumor volumes and their relationship with the PTA, caloric, and cVEMP test results.
RESULTS: The PTA, caloric, and cVE …

Purpose: This review aims to analyze the diagnostic methods used to evaluate inferior vestibular nerve neuritis. Methods: We performed an electronic search on the PubMed database for clinical studies investigating the diagnostic techniques used for inferior vestibular nerve neuritis. Results: We initially identified 114 records in our search. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we narrowed it down to 12 studies. These studies collectively examined a total of 642 patients diagnosed with vestibular nerve neuritis, 64 of whom had inferior vestibular neuritis. Conclusions: The inf

Objective:To study the characteristics and clinical value of spontaneous nystagmus in patients with peripheral vestibular dysfunction.Method:Sixty cases with acute unilateral peripheral vestibular dysfunction were studied. All were diagnozed as vestibular neuritis(VN) . The relationship between SN and disease duration,DP and UW were analyzed.Result:SN was present in49 patients(81.7%)and absent in the remaining 11(18.3%).The intensity of SN ranged from 0.5°/s-20.4°/s and had negative correlation with the disease duration(r=-0.478,P<0.01). The patients were divided into 3 groups (mild, medium and

OBJECTIVES: There is a high incidence of vestibular loss in children with cochlear implants (CCI). However, the relationship between vestibular loss and various outcomes is unknown in children. The objectives of this study are to (1) determine whether age-related changes in peripheral vestibular tests occur; (2) quantify peripheral vestibular function in children with normal hearing and CCI; and (3) determine whether amount of vestibular loss predicts visual acuity and balance performance.
DESIGN: Eleven CCI and 12 children with normal hearing completed the following tests of vestibular funct

Objective:To investigate the staging of vestibular organ damage in Meniere's disease, based on the vestibular function examination battery. Methods:Thirty-nine patients, clinically diagnosed as unilateral Meniere's disease, underwent audiologic test and vestibular function examination battery, including ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential(oVEMP), cervical vestibular evoke myogenic potential(cVEMP), and caloric tests. Based on the results of the vestibular function examination battery, the vestibular function was divided into 4 stages. StageⅠ: oVEMP, cVEMP, and caloric tests were normal

ISSUE: The findings in literature indicate inconsistency in the complications caused by the implant of electrodes in the cochlea; vestibular alterations and balance disorders are mentioned as the most likely.
PURPOSE: To evaluate, in literature, through the results of multiple vestibular function tests, the effects of cochlear implant surgery on postural stability in adult patients and to analyze.
HYPOTHESIS: From the PICO strategy, where the Population focuses on adults, Intervention is cochlear implant surgery, Comparisons are between implanted patients, and Outcomes are the results of the…

The article presents a literature review based on Scopus, Pubmed and Elibrary databases on etiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations and treatment of vestibular neuritis. Recent international clinical criteria for diagnosis and classification of this disease are given. Clinical and instrumental diagnostic methods for unilateral vestibular hypofunction are discussed, as well as differential diagnosis with other acute and episodic vestibular disorders, especially with acute vertebrobasilar insufficiency. Controversial issues of medical and physical treatment of vestibular neuritis are cons

A dysfunction of the vestibular system is commonly characterized by a combination of phenomena involving perceptual, ocular motor, postural, and autonomic manifestations: vertigo/dizziness, nystagmus, ataxia, and nausea. These 4 manifestations correlate with different aspects of vestibular function and emanate from different sites within the central nervous system. The diagnosis of vestibular syndromes always requires interdisciplinary thinking. A detailed history allows early differentiation into 9 categories that serve as a practical guide for differential diagnosis: (1) dizziness and lighth

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Children experiencing dizziness frequently go unevaluated or experience delays in correct diagnosis due to systemic and inherent barriers. While most causes of pediatric dizziness do not involve the peripheral vestibular system, otolaryngologists are frequently consulted for expert opinion. This study offers a broad overview of the leading causes of pediatric dizziness and imbalance to assist otolaryngologists with evaluating and managing this challenging population.
RECENT FINDINGS: Evaluation of children with dizziness should exclude serious central nervous system conditi

Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP) are commonly recorded in patients experiencing vertigo or chronic instability. This test evaluates the patient's otolith function and is often combined with both Videonystagmography and Video Head Impulse Test. VEMP is a simple, reproducible test, in the absence of any pre-existing conductive hearing loss. Cervical VEMP explore both saccular function and the inferior vestibular nerve, whereas ocular VEMP assess utricular function and the superior vestibular nerve. In combination with previously described tests, VEMP allows characterization of vertig

OBJECTIVE: To describe the main vestibular assessment tests performed in children aged zero to twelve years and the main causes of referral for vestibular assessment.
METHODS: The review was guided by the following question: What are the main vestibular assessment tests performed in children aged zero to twelve years and the main causes of referral for vestibular assessment? The PVO strategy was used, being defined as: Population (P) - newborns and children; study Variable (V) - causes of referral for vestibular assessment; study Outcome (O): the main vestibular assessment tests and the main

OBJECTIVE: Quantification of the stepping test in routine neurological examination.
SETTING: University Hospital Groningen, the Netherlands.
DESIGN: Prospective, controlled study.
METHODS: The stepping test was assessed in 41 healthy subjects, in 7 subjects with artificially induced vertigo and in 83 patients with disturbances of gait or equilibrium resulting from different affections of the central nervous system. Displacement and rotation to the right or the left side were measured. The different groups were then compared with each other.
RESULTS: We found a great inter- and intra-indivi
