Labyrinthitis ossificans (LO) is a rare pathological ossification of the membranous labyrinth, typically arising after inflammatory or infectious insults to the inner ear. We present a case of a 65-year-old male with type 2 diabetes presenting with progressive unilateral sensorineural hearing loss and a history of recurrent childhood ear infections treated with repeated lavages. Imaging revealed advanced ossification of the right cochlea, vestibule, and semicircular canals, despite no history of meningitis or trauma. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed near-complete loss of the normal fl

Major evolutionary transitions, in which animals develop new body plans and adapt to dramatically new habitats and lifestyles, have punctuated the history of life. The origin of cetaceans from land-living mammals is among the most famous of these events. Much earlier, during the Mesozoic Era, many reptile groups also moved from land to water, but these transitions are more poorly understood. We use computed tomography to study changes in the inner ear vestibular system, involved in sensing balance and equilibrium, as one of these groups, extinct crocodile relatives called thalattosuchians, tra

PURPOSE: State-of-the-art imaging of the normal and pathologic vestibule.
METHODS AND MATERIAL: This study is based on the experience of three French imaging centers (Val de Grâce, Bégin, and Saint-Antoine hospitals) working with 1- and 1.5-tesla magnetic resonance units and high-resolution computed tomography, and it includes a review of the literature. Computed tomography is performed with a high-resolution program, matrix 512 x 512, field of view 9.6 cm, joined 1-mm section, overlapped sections every 0.5 mm, axial and coronal sections, or reformatted images. High-resolution magnetic resona

Disturbance of equilibrium is a vestibular induced disturbance of orientation in space that is perceived subjectively as vertigo. Change of behaviour and specific medication is the optimal causal therapy, but symptomatic therapy is preferred in practice, using drugs that suppress different input activities or the activity of central vestibular structures. In this way a disordered flow of information is eliminated and the equilibrium is restored.

BACKGROUND: Dysplasias of the bony labyrinth are frequently associated with cerebrospinal fluid fistula and are usually discovered because of recurrent meningitis.
CASE REPORT: A 1 year-old infant was admitted for a pneumococcal meningitis which appeared 2 days after the occurrence of a clear otorrhea from the right ear. The same organism was isolated from the otorrhea fluid, which also contained cerebrospinal fluid as confirmed cytochemically. The meningitis rapidly resolved with antibiotic treatment. Auditory brain stem responses were abolished from the right ear. CT of the temporal bones s

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in post-meningitic patients and its impact on surgical decision.
METHOD: The pre-operative MRI data and auditory brainstem response (ABR) examination of five post-meningitic patients were studied. They were implanted with cochleas.
RESULT: The interval between the onset of bacterial meningitis and the hearing loss was (15.8 +/- 15.0)d and it was longer in children than adults. Five ears showed membranous cochlear labyrinth abnormality; 3 ears had vestibule vestibule abnormality; 8 ears demonstrated semicir

BACKGROUND: Naturalistic head accelerations can be used to elicit vestibular evoked potentials (VestEPs). These potentials allow for analysis of cortical vestibular processing and its multi-sensory integration with a high temporal resolution.
METHODS: We report the results of two experiments in which we compared the differential VestEPs elicited by randomized translations, rotations, and tilts in healthy subjects on a motion platform.
RESULTS: An event-related potential (ERP) analysis revealed that established VestEPs were verifiable in all three acceleration domains (translations, rotations

INTRODUCTION: The term bilateral vestibulopathy (BV) was recently defined by the Bárány Society. Loss of otolith function was not included in their criteria. Although spontaneous progression to complete bilateral impairment of vestibular function is expected, it is unlikely that patients with advanced BV will continue to present episodes of intense vertigo. Here, following CARE case report guidelines, we report the case of patients meeting the criteria for BV and still disabled by vertigo.
CASE SERIES: Three patients evaluated in our department meeting the Bárány criteria for definite BV but
