BACKGROUND: A high injury prevalence has been reported among veterinarians. Studies describing the factors associated with injury have been limited.
AIMS: To describe the characteristics of serious injuries and the use of safety precautions at the time of injury in Australian veterinarians.
METHODS: Graduates in veterinary medicine from Australian universities completed questionnaires asking about injuries during their professional career including type of injury and circumstances during which injury occurred.

We report on veterinarians showing itching, swelling, and urticaria on hands and arms after contact with amniotic fluid of cows and/or pigs. Scratch tests with the corresponding fluid gave positive results. RAST investigations were done with self-prepared allergen discs. In all 6 cases, the RAST on amniotic fluid was positive, correlating well with the results of the skin tests. A serologic service for determining antibody levels due to prior rabies immunization was provided at an annual convention of the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association in January 1977. A total of 26 veterinarians volunteered to participate, and only 2 had adequate serum levels of antibody related solely to a pre-exposure immunization. OBJECTIVE: To identify and quantify potential ergonomic hazards associated with routine reproductive examinations of cattle.
SAMPLE: 7 bovine veterinarians.
PROCEDURES: Each veterinarian was observed and videotaped during 2 bovine reproductive examination appointments. During each appointment, a force-matching protocol was used to estimate the entry force used by the veterinarian to insert an arm into a cow's rectum.
