Relating binocular and monocular vision in strabismic and anisometropic amblyopia.

OBJECTIVES: To examine deficits in monocular and binocular vision in adults with amblyopia and to test the following 2 hypotheses: (1) Regardless of clinical subtype, the degree of impairment in binocular integration predicts the pattern of monocular acuity deficits. (2) Subjects who lack binocular integration exhibit the most severe interocular suppression. METHODS: Seven subjects with anisometropia, 6 subjects with strabismus, and 7 control subjects were tested. Monocular tests included Snellen acuity, grating acuity, Vernier acuity, and contrast sensitivity. Binocular tests included Titmus

Stereopsis and disparity vergence in monkeys with subnormal binocular vision.

The surgical treatment for strabismus in infants generally results in microtropia or subnormal binocular vision. Although the clinical characteristics of these conditions are well established, there are important questions about the mechanisms of binocular vision in these patients that can best be investigated in an appropriate animal model. In the present psychophysical investigations, spatial frequency response functions for disparity-induced fusional vergence and for local stereopsis were studied in macaque monkeys, who demonstrated many of the major visual characteristics of patients whose

Prevalence of non-strabismic binocular vision anomalies and age-related changes in binocular vision among middle-aged and older adults: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: With the global aging population, binocular vision anomalies in middle-aged and older adults have gained increasing attention. Non-Strabismic Binocular Vision Anomalies (NSBVAs) are particularly prevalent in this population, yet clinical research remains insufficient. To bridge this gap, we conducted a systematic review to evaluate NSBVAs prevalence and subtypes in middle-aged and older adults and analyze age-related changes in binocular vision. The aim was to clarify how aging affects binocular function and inform clinical management. METHODS: Studies were identified using PubMed

Evaluation of Binocular Vision Therapy Efficacy by 3D Video-Oculography Measurement of Binocular Alignment and Motility.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate two cases of intermittent exotropia treated by vision therapy the efficacy of the treatment by complementing the clinical examination with a 3D videooculography to register and to evidence the potential applicability of this technology for such purpose. METHODS: We report the binocular alignment changes occurring after vision therapy in a woman of 36 years with an intermittent exotropia of 25 prism diopters at far and 18 PD at near and a child of 10 years with 8 PD of intermittent exotropia in primary position associated to 6 PD of left eye hypotropia. Both patients pre

Recovery of depth perception in adults with abnormal binocular vision.

Our goal in this study was to determine the efficacy, time course and mechanisms underlying the improvement of stereo vision using 3D virtual reality (VR) games to improve depth perception in adults with a history of abnormal early visual experience due to strabismus, anisometropia and/or amblyopia. Participants engaged in 30 home-based training sessions, supplemented by 5 in-lab assessments to monitor progress. The training protocol utilized a diverse set of VR games targeting stereoacuity, anti-suppression, and binocular alignment. The stereo training games employed various depth cues to fac

Effects of orthokeratology on binocular vision and myopia control in adolescents.

This study aimed to compare the efficacy of myopia control in adolescents wearing orthokeratology lenses (OKL) or single-vision spectacles (SVS). This prospective study included 30 myopic adolescents wearing orthokeratology lenses (OKL group) and 30 wearing SVS (SVS group). To prevent pseudo-replication arising from the strong correlation between fellow eyes, only right-eye data were analyzed, except for binocular tests requiring measurements from both eyes. All participants underwent assessments of visual acuity (VA), refraction, axial length (AL), and binocular visual function, including acc

IMI Accommodation and Binocular Vision in Myopia Development and Progression.

The role of accommodation in myopia development and progression has been debated for decades. More recently, the understanding of the mechanisms involved in accommodation and the consequent alterations in ocular parameters has expanded. This International Myopia Institute white paper reviews the variations in ocular parameters that occur with accommodation and the mechanisms involved in accommodation and myopia development and progression. Convergence is synergistically linked with accommodation and the impact of this on myopia has also been critiqued. Specific topics reviewed included accommo

[Disorders of Simple Binocular Vision in Heterophoria and their Spectacle Correction].

This study deals with evaluation of binocular vision in group of young subjects without eye pathology. We examined at whole 68 subjects with average age 26 years, median 24 years. The sample was divided into two main groups. Group A contains subjects with far and near ortophoria (at whole 26 subjects = 38 %). Group B contains subjects with binocular vision disorder (at whole 42 subjects). One subject had strabismus. The most frequent non-strabismus disorder of binocular vision was convergence insufficiency (13 subjects = 19 %), simple esophoria (12 subjects = 17 %) and simple exophoria (8 subj

Analysis of tonic and accommodative vergence disorders of binocular vision.

Tonic and accommodative vergence disorders of binocular vision are analyzed with separate methods. The center of symmetry and the associated phoria of forced duction fixation disparity curves are two criteria used for prismatic correction of tonic vergence disorders. The associated phoria is corrected physiologically when patients who have tonic disorders are able to develop prism adaptation with orthoptic exercises. Graphical methods are used to analyze accommodative disorders resulting from mutual interactions between accommodation and convergence. Graphic analysis illustrates that patients

Preoperative binocular vision characteristics in the age-related cataract population.

BACKGROUND: This study is the first part of the "Binocular Vision Anomalies after Cataract Surgery" study that aimed to investigate the impact of cataract surgery on binocular vision status in adults with age-related cataract. This study aimed to investigate the preoperative binocular vision status of participants with age-related cataract. METHODS: Patients who elected to undergo bilateral cataract surgery (≥50 years of age) were recruited. Clinical measures of binocular vision including stereopsis, ocular alignment, fusional vergence, vergence facility, convergence amplitude and a symptom s

Topical Review: Assessment of Binocular Sensory Processes in Low Vision.

This article summarizes the evidence for a higher prevalence of binocular vision dysfunctions in individuals with vision impairment. Assessment for and identification of binocular vision dysfunctions can detect individuals experiencing difficulties in activities including reading, object placement tasks, and mobility.Comprehensive vision assessment in low vision populations is necessary to identify the extent of remaining vision and to enable directed rehabilitation efforts. In patients with vision impairment, little attention is typically paid to assessments of binocular vision, including ocu

Deterioration of binocular vision after alcohol intake influences driving performance.

In this study, we assessed the influence of moderate alcohol intake on binocular vision, vergence system and simulated driving performance by analyzing the interactions between visual deterioration and driving variables. Thirty young healthy subjects were recruited. For the analysis, we measured: visual function (visual acuity and stereoacuity), phorias and fusional reserves. Also, we checked Sheard's and Percival's criteria at near and far. The accommodative convergence/accommodation (AC/A) ratio was calculated and vergence facility was also obtained at near. A driving simulator was used to a

[Refractive laser eye surgery and binocular vision disorders--case report].

UNLABELLED: Laser refractive surgery is a lively developing branch of ophthalmology. There are a numbers of contraindications for this type of surgery, but many of them are difficult to define, for example binocular vision impairment. Accurate analysis of orthoptic examination before refractive surgery, has forced us to dissuade our patient from refractive surgery, despite the fact that there were no other contraindications. CASE STUDY: A 33 years old woman referred for refractive surgery because of bilateral myopia (right eye: -5.25 Dsph -0.75 Dcyl ax. 170; left eye: -5.0 Dsph). There was no
