For more than 50 years, the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences has been reviewing nutrition research and defining nutrient requirements for healthy people, referred to as the recommended dietary allowances (RDA). As new nutrition research is published, the importance of vitamins as vital nutrients is underscored, and new physiologic roles and applications to human health are examined and considered with regard to updating the RDA. Each year a substantial amount of research is published on vitamins. This article examines and summarizes noteworthy research published on …

Water-soluble vitamins are required as enzyme cofactors in a wide variety of metabolic reactions. Riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin C are essential in redox reactions; thiamine and biotin are involved in macronutrient metabolism; and folate, vitamin B12, pyridoxine, and riboflavin play important roles in the regulation of S-adenosylmethionine production and DNA synthesis. Each of the water-soluble vitamins appears to require its own membrane transport process for absorption across the enterocyte. The absorption of vitamin B12, or cobalamin (Cbl), is unique in requiring multiple processes from th…

Women of childbearing age who are capable of becoming pregnant should ingest 0.4 mg of folic acid per day to reduce the incidence of neural tube defects (anencephaly, spina bifida, and encephalocele). This may also reduce the incidence of conotruncal heart defects, limb defects, renal anomalies, pyloric stenosis, and possibly oral-facial clefts. Women who are at increased risk of having an affected fetus because of having had a previously affected fetus should take 4 mg of folic acid daily. Women with epilepsy, particularly those taking antiepileptic drugs, should follow the same guidelines as

Conditioning therapy preceding bone marrow transplantation usually consists of high-dose chemotherapy and total body irradiation. This is as … pectively). The doses chosen were sufficient to maintain the initial plasma concentrations of these vitamins. However, alpha-tocopherol (in RDA doses) and beta-carotene (no RDA established) concentrations deteriorated after the conditioning therapy (20% and 50% loss, respectively). The loss of these lipid-soluble antioxidants has been considered to result …

Chronic alcoholics frequently have evidence of nutritional deficiency due to decreased intake, reduced uptake and impaired utilisation of nutrients. The alcoholic has increased nutrient requirements due to greater metabolic demands and the need for tissue repair. Chronic alcohol-related brain damage can often be a direct result of nutrient depletion, particularly of the vitamins thiamine, B12, nicotinamide and pyridoxine. Lesser degrees of brain damage are frequently unrecognised, and by the time a vitamin deficiency syndrome has developed and been diagnosed, irreversible damage has often occu…

This review summarizes the current knowledge on essential vitamins B1, B2, B3, and B5. These B-complex vitamins must be taken from diet, with the exception of vitamin B3, that can also be synthetized from amino acid tryptophan. All of these vitamins are water soluble, which determines their main properties, namely: they are partly lost when food is washed or boiled since they migrate to the water; the requirement of membrane transporters for their permeation into the cells; and their safety since any excess is rapidly eliminated via the kidney. The therapeutic use of B-complex vitamins is most…
