Seasonal variations of vitelline envelope proteins, vitellogenin, and sex steroids in male and female eelpout (Zoarces viviparus).

The seasonal variations of vitelline envelope proteins, vitellogenin (VTG), and reproductive steroids were investigated in feral male and female eelpout, Zoarces viviparus. 17beta-Estradiol was present in both sexes with a peak in prespawning fish of 2.6 ng/ml in males and 2.7 ng/ml in females. 11-Ketotestosterone peaked in June at 4.2 and 0.47 ng/ml in males and females, respectively. A surge of testosterone was seen in both sexes in August, just prior to spawning. All steroid levels were low during early pregnancy. The vitelline envelope of the eelpout is composed of two major and one minor

Mosquito cathepsin B-like protease involved in embryonic degradation of vitellin is produced as a latent extraovarian precursor.

Here we report identification of a novel member of the thiol protease superfamily in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. It is synthesized and secreted as a latent proenzyme in a sex-, stage-, and tissue-specific manner by the fat body, an insect metabolic tissue, of female mosquitoes during vitellogenesis in response to blood feeding. The secreted, hemolymph form of the enzyme is a large molecule, likely a hexamer, consisting of 44-kDa subunits. The deduced amino acid sequence of this 44-kDa precursor shares high similarity with cathepsin B but not with other mammalian cathepsins. We ha

Omphalocele with Patent Omphalomesenteric Duct and Intestinal Prolapse in a Preterm Neonate: Histopathological Evidence of Incomplete Vitelline Duct Involution.

Patent omphalomesenteric duct (OMD) with intestinal prolapse coexisting with omphalocele is an exceptional ventral folding anomaly that may be misdiagnosed as gastroschisis. The vitellointestinal duct normally involutes between the seventh and ninth gestational weeks; failure of obliteration produces a spectrum of anomalies including Meckel diverticulum, fibrous bands, umbilico-ileal fistulae, or, rarely, a fully patent duct with bowel prolapse. Fewer than 15 cases of the combined anomaly have been reported since 1967. We describe a preterm neonate (32 + 4 weeks, 2160 g) with an intact omphalo

Serous Cystadenocarcinoma Arising in Presumed Vitelline Duct Remnant: A Case Report and Implications in the Management of Cancer of Unknown Primary.

Background. Malignant neoplasms arising in Meckel's diverticulum, a vitelline duct remnant, are rare yet well-documented. Case Presentation. A 53-year-old previously healthy female presented with an enlarging midline abdominal wall mass. A computed tomography scan revealed a mass involving the linea alba, bilateral rectus abdominis, and subcutaneous fat. Extensive clinical workup failed to demonstrate other lesions, except local and paratracheal/hilar lymphadenopathy. Histopathologic examination of the resected tumor demonstrated a spectrum of serous neoplasia including serous cystadenoma, pap

Enlarged left vitelline vein remnant as a cause of cyanosis after the Fontan procedure: resolution with an Amplatzer vascular plug.

A 6-year-old girl with heterotaxy and a functional single ventricle had persistent cyanosis 4 years after a fenestrated Fontan procedure. Cardiac catheterization revealed a large venous fistula from a left-sided hepatic vein to the coronary sinus, resulting in desaturation. The anomalous vein was occluded with an Amplatzer vascular plug.

Topographical relationships of the yolk sac remnant and vitelline vessels with the midgut loop in the extra-embryonic coelom of human embryos.

The yolk sac is supplied by the vitelline artery and vein (VA, VV), which run through the yolk stalk in combination with the omphaloenteric duct. Moreover, the VV takes a free posterior course outside the midgut mesentery containing the secondarily-developed superior mesenteric vein (SMV). However, the regression process of these structures has not been demonstrated photographically. The present study evaluated serial histological sections from 20 embryos of stages 15-19 or crown-rump length (CRL) 7.5-20 mm. All specimens carried the SMV as sequential tissue slits. However, an omphaloenteric d

Vitelline membrane proteins promote left-sided nodal expression after neurula rotation in the ascidian, Halocynthia roretzi.

Stereotyped left-right asymmetry both in external and internal organization is found in various animals. Left-right symmetry is broken by the neurula rotation in the ascidian, Halocynthia roretzi. Neurula embryos rotate along the anterior-posterior axis in a counterclockwise direction, and the rotation stops when the left side of the embryo is oriented downwards, resulting in contact of the left-side epidermis with the vitelline membrane at the bottom of perivitelline space. Then, such contact induces the expression of nodal and its downstream Pitx2 gene in the left-side epidermis. Vitelline m

Modified whole-mount in situ hybridisation and immunohistochemistry protocols without removal of the vitelline membrane in the appendicularian Oikopleura dioica.

The appendicularian Oikopleura dioica is a planktonic chordate that retains a tadpole shape throughout its life. Its simple and transparent body, invariant cell lineages, fast development and available genome and transcriptome resources make it a promising model organism for research in developmental biology. However, large-scale analysis of gene expression in O. dioica is limited owing to the laborious and time-consuming process of manual removal of the vitelline membrane, because devitellinisation of pre-hatching embryos causes failure of normal development. Therefore, in this study, modifie

[Cytoarchitecture of the vitellaria of two monogenean species, parasites of the holocephalan fish Chimaera monstrosa L. with analysis of vitelline structure in the Neodermata].

The ultrastructural features of the vitelline follicles of ectoparasitic monogenean Chimaericola leptogaster Leuckart, 1830 (Polyopisthocotylidea, Chimaericolidae) and endoparasitic Calicotyle affinis Scott, 1911 (Monopisthocotylidea, Monocotylidae), parasites of the gills and cloaca of a holocephalan fish, Chimaera monstrosa L., are described. The vitelline follicles of the studied monogenean species are composed of the cells of a single type, vitellocytes at various stages of development. Special isolation of the vitellarium from the surrounding tissue in C. leptogaster is absent. Instead, a

Vitelline Vein Varix Diagnosed Postnatally Following a Prenatal Diagnosis of Umbilical Vein Varix: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Vitelline vein varices are rare vascular abnormalities. Differentiating them from umbilical vein varices during the prenatal period is often challenging; however, thrombus formation can occur in the early postnatal period, potentially leading to portal vein thrombosis, extrahepatic portal vein obstruction, and portal hypertension. Therefore, early diagnosis and appropriate therapeutic intervention are crucial for these patients. We present a case that was initially diagnosed in utero as an umbilical vein varix but was subsequently confirmed after birth to be a vitelline vein varix complicated

Ovary-specific transcriptomes and the essential role of vitelline membrane protein 26Ab in embryonic desiccation resistance and female fertility of Zeugodacus tau.

Zeugodacus tau (Walker) is a globally significantly agricultural pest with severe economic and ecological impacts. Transcriptome sequencing-based data analysis has proven instrumental in identifying key functional genes in insects. However, the limited availability of transcriptome data has impeded the mining of functional genes in Z. tau. We conducted transcriptome sequencing on the midgut, Malpighian tubules, fat body, and ovary of 5-day old female Z. tau. Using a standard screening pipeline, we identified 2458 ovary-specific genes, which was much larger than that in other tissues. To verify

Congenital ileal-mesenteric fibrous band remnant of the vitelline artery causing small bowel obstruction in an adult female: a case report.

The vitelline circulation connects the fetus and yolk sac in the first few weeks of fetal development. Its components are the vitelline duct, vitelline arteries and vitelline vein. This gradually breaks down as the placenta grows and overtakes the function of yolk sac as the primary nutrition source. In the event of persistence of these structures, multiple anatomical anomalies can arise such as a Meckel´s diverticulum, fibrous bands and others. We report on a rare finding of an ileal-mesenteric fibrous band remnant of a vitelline artery causing small bowel obstruction in an adult female. Our

[Generation and characterization of avian vitelline antibodies against lipopolysaccharide and lipid A. 2. Investigations of specificity of egg yolk antibodies (IgY) against endotoxin].

Various preparations of egg yolk antibodies against different endotoxins of gram-negative bacteria were characterized with regard to their immunological properties. To do this, we investigated the reactivity of antibodies against a number of lipopolysaccharides and lipid-A by enzyme-immuno-assays and immunoblot. It could be shown that all antibody preparations contained specific antibodies, reactive with their homologous antigen. Furthermore these antibodies showed cross-reactivity with structural diverse LPS- and lipid A-antigens from different sources. Anti lipid A-antibodies appeared to be

[Histopathological variations in the vitelline duct in heterotopic gastric mucosa with special reference to inflammatory changes. (Study of resected specimens from 1956-1995)].

Cases of resected vitellointestinal duct remnants (including Meckel's diverticula, fistulae and a cyst) diagnosed at the Histopathology Department of our hospital between 1956 and 1995 were reviewed for the presence of heterotopic gastric mucosa. The review of the files included the whole archives of the Bács-Kiskun County Hospital. The files contained 166 records of vitellointestinal duct remnant; of these 151 were evaluated and 28 were shown to involve ectopic gastric mucosa. Seven of these latter had no assessable surface mucosa, and therefore only 21 specimens were evaluated for "gastric"
