New device for time-averaged measurement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Contamination by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the environment is an increasing concern since these compounds are harmful to ecosystems and even to human health. Actually, many of them are considered toxic and/or carcinogenic. The main sources of pollution come from very diffuse focal points such as industrial discharges, urban water and accidental spills as these compounds may be present in many products and processes (i.e., paints, fuels, petroleum products, raw materials, solvents, etc.) making their control difficult. The presence of these compounds in groundwater, influenced by dis…

Monitoring of volatile organic compounds using a single tin dioxide sensor.

The paper describes a new and simple method for monitoring volatile organic compounds resulting from a specific industrial indoor process. The method is based on the characteristics of tin dioxide sensors to be sensitive and non-selective to a large variety of gases. We use these characteristics to determine an equivalent concentration of the volatile organic compound mixture, a method which has not been used in other studies or experiments. The value of the equivalent concentration shows the accuracy of the process and the air purity of an industrial environment. A system including a tin diox…

Estimation of biogenic volatile organic compounds emissions in subtropical island--Taiwan.

Elevated tropospheric ozone is harmful to human health and plants. It is formed through the photochemical reactions involving volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NO(x)). The elevated ozone episodes occur mainly in summer months in the United States, while the high-ozone episodes frequently occur during the fall in Taiwan. The unique landscape of Taiwan produces tremendous amounts of biogenic VOCs in the mountain regions that are adjacent to concentrated urban areas. The urban areas, in turn, generate prodigious amounts of anthropogenic emissions. Biogenic VOC emissions have …

Source characterization of volatile organic compounds at Carlsbad Caverns National Park.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park (CAVE), located in southeastern New Mexico, experiences elevated ground-level ozone (O3) exceeding the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) of 70 ppbv. It is situated adjacent to the Permian Basin, one of the largest oil and gas (O&G) producing regions in the US. In 2019, the Carlsbad Caverns Air Quality Study (CarCavAQS) was conducted to examine impacts of different sources on ozone precursors, including nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Here, we use positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis of speciated VOCs to characteriz…

Characterization of Photothermal Desorption-Compatible Diffusive Samplers for Volatile Organic Compounds.

Products and starting materials containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can easily be found in a variety of businesses, making them a common source of occupational exposure. To prevent negative impacts on employee health, field industrial hygienists must conduct regular sampling to ensure exposures remain below the regulatory limits set by governmental and professional associations. As such, the need for sensitive and reliable exposure assessment techniques becomes evident. Over the preceding decade, the industrial hygiene research group at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) ha…

Environmental exposure to volatile organic compounds is associated with endothelial injury.

OBJECTIVE: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are airborne toxicants abundant in outdoor and indoor air. High levels of VOCs are also present at various Superfund and other hazardous waste sites; however, little is known about the cardiovascular effects of VOCs. We hypothesized that ambient exposure to VOCs exacerbate cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk by depleting circulating angiogenic cells (CACs). APPROACH AND RESULTS: In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 603 participants with low-to-high CVD risk and measured 15 subpopulations of CACs by flow cytometry and 16 urinary metabolites of …

Behavioural responses of Phlebotomus duboscqi to plant-derived volatile organic compounds.

Phlebotomine sand flies are vectors of Leishmania parasites that cause leishmaniases. Both sexes of sand flies feed on plants primarily for sugars, although the chemical cues that mediate attraction to host plants remain largely unknown. Previously, using coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, the authors identified several volatile organic compounds (VOCs) common to preferred host plants for selected Afrotropical sand flies from the Fabaceae family. Of the identified volatiles, the significance of the monoterpenes linalool oxide, ocimene and p-cymene and the benzenoid m-cresol, p-creso…

Colorimetric Sensing of Volatile Organic Compounds Produced from Heated Cooking Oils.

Measurement of cooking-associated air pollution indoors is an integral part of exposure monitoring and human health risk assessment. There is a need for easy to use, fast, and economical detection systems to quantify the various emissions from different sources in the home. Addressing this challenge, a colorimetric sensor array (CSA) is reported as a new method to characterize volatile organic compounds produced from cooking, a major contributor to indoor air pollution. The sensor array is composed of pH indicators and aniline dyes from classical spot tests, which enabled molecular recognition…

Pulmonary Health Effects of Indoor Volatile Organic Compounds-A Meta-Analysis.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are commonly found in consumer products, including furniture, sealants and paints. Thus, indoor VOCs have become a public health concern, especially in high-income countries (HICs), where people spend most of their time indoors, and indoor and outdoor air exchange is minimal due to a lack of ventilation. VOCs produce high levels of reaction with the airway epithelium and mucosa membrane and is linked with pulmonary diseases. This paper takes a stock of the literature to assess the strength of association (measured by effect size) between VOCs and pulmonary dis…

Quantifying source contributions of volatile organic compounds under hydraulic fracking moratorium.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are precursors for ozone (O3) and secondary particulate matter, which contribute to asthma and cardiovascular diseases. With the technology development of hydraulic fracking, the United States experienced a shale gas boom in the last decade while the public raised concerns about the potential health impacts of co-emitted VOCs and other airborne pollutants. National Energy Technology Laboratory conducted stationary trailer-based ambient monitoring to study the sources of VOCs in Maryland, where the state enacted a moratorium on unconventional natural gas extrac…

Treatment of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds using two-liquid phase biofilters.

The traditional one-liquid phase biofilter (OLPB), with water as the selected liquid phase, demonstrated low performance to volatile hydrophobic organic compounds. In this study, a novel two-liquid phase biofilter (TLPB) using silicone oil and water was established to treat gaseous dichloromethane (DCM). A comprehensive investigation of removal performance, kinetic analysis, biomass accumulations, pressure drops, CO2 productions, and microbial communities of the two biofilters was compared. Results showed that TLPB presented an average removal efficiency of 85% during 200 days of operation, wh

Selected volatile organic compounds as biomarkers for exposure to tobacco smoke.

Cutoff levels on the scales for benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, styrene, o-xylene and m/p-xylene in blood were developed to classify smokers from non-smokers. Self-reported smoking during the last 5 d was used as the true smoking status. Receiver operating characteristics methods that minimized the difference between specificity and sensitivity were used to develop these cutoffs. Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for the cycle 2005-2006 were used for this purpose. For the total population, a cutoff of 0.038 ng/ml for benzene was able to classify smokers from non-smoker
